West Continent/Region Name Proposals

From BattleMaster Wiki

NOTE: This activity has already ended on 2005.11.10. This page exists now to serve an archival purpose and as a reference to the developers of the project. Any future additions attempting to suggest more names will be reverted. Thank you for your concern.

This is the page once using for region name proposals collecting of the West Continent project. There is a seperate page for proposing a name for the continent itself. That page can be found here.

Every proposer will find at least part of their proposed names be adopted. Since the total number of proposals has exceed the amount of names we need, the quality and quantity of proposals decide how many of them will be accepted, while if there are repeated proposals for same locations, which proposal will become the final one shall be a matter of luck and probability.

You can visit the up-to-date West Continent map by visiting its project page.

Oriental Names suggestion from Balley

I would suggest Oriental theme region names concentrate in the same place. Easier to roleplaying a Oriental Realm.

Maybe the Western side near volcanoes: Prefered names:

Small size city near Volcanoes with black soil

  • 黑風寨 Heifengzhai = Blackwind Keep - Coastal winds consistantly blew the darkened volcanic dust. Hence named.
This is good, but I thought someone said we should put oriental names on the east side island? Maybe its English version can be put into consideration. -- Gsklee 3 November 2005 14:40 (CET)

Preffix

  • Wu'yuan武玄 = Related to Battle, no geographic meaning but looks cool

fancy suffixes behind it to suit locations

Emmm, I think it should be 玄武. The inversion is not bad though. -- Gsklee 3 November 2005 14:40 (CET)
  • 關 guan = fort / wall
  • 邑 city = but more ancient usage
  • 寺 ji = temple

(Maybe the fort like thingie can be called Wu'yuanji or Wu'yuanguan)

Mountains:

  • 劍台山Jiantaishan = Mountains of Swords

or

  • 萬刃鋒 Wanrenfeng = Mountains of Swords

City on coast

  • [ACCEPTED] Linhai 臨海 (By the sea)

The Eastern Island on the map

  • [ACCEPTED] Donghaiwei = 東海衛 (Fort on the Eastern seas) (looks not so good in Chinese, okay in English sound though)

Just a comment, is'nt too few rivers?!!! Many Chinese names are water feature related :p

I won't mind to have a few more if someone willing to go piecing them out... -- Gsklee 3 November 2005 14:40 (CET)

since Chinese is a Characterical language....i have to explain a bit..more

NAMING places in a Chinese way - properly...

Many who dont know Chinese but want to make a Chinese name would just simply find a dictionary and grab words, making some nonsense words (especially ones seen in tatoos...ugh)

Many Chinese places are based on a prefix or suffix plus a word to descibe the feature of the place

Geographical

  • shan 山= hill / mountain
  • yang 陽= sun (eg: Hanyang the ancient capital of Qin Dynasty, a South facing slope. In the Northern Hemisphere a South facing slope is warmer, Han means facing i guess)
  • jiang 江= river

problems: words with the same sound

  • jiang also stands for border jiang 疆....
  • he 河= also river
  • hai 海 = sea
  • wu 湖 = lake
  • tau 頭 = head
  • zhou 州= region, province (very common in ancient China!)
  • gang 港 = port
  • wan 灣 = bay
  • lin 林 = forest
  • jing 京 = capital / big city (IRL, Beijing = North Capital)

Directional:

  • dong 東 = east
  • nan 南 = south
  • xi 西 = west
  • bei 北= north

Many of these combinations are used in real world (eg: North of the Lake = Wubei.). So for BM map I would have to choose some fancier , more ancient words. Also it is better to relate places on map

Not so good names, below:

Just City

  • Longjing 龍京 = Dragon Capital / City (again rare in Chinese..but okay in English)

A moutain

  • Yunxian 雲山 = Cloudy Mountain...

or

  • [MODIFIED] Caiyunxian 彩雲山 = Visual sensational Cloudy Mountain ..hmm...

Aboves are not so good in Chinese (just...not so good, mostly the feel) but examples, but if you feel okay feel free to use them. (This is English game anyway :p)

More to come. I need to think awhile...hmm (I have end of semmester exams recently...) RPG games might be a source of ideas.

Bear me..It is quite hard to think Chinese name from nothing (or just my lack of creativity). Possibly i will try to translate some English names here.....

One of my favorite ancient Chinese place names (mostly from Three Kingdoms)

  • [ACCEPTED] 劍閣 Jiange = Alley of Swords! (In fact a real place name in Sichuan, alley of swords is a passage along the cliffs, it is so mountainous and dangerous)
閣 means some kind of small pavilion or summerhouse... "Alley of Swords" sounds good though :) -- Gsklee 3 November 2005 14:29 (CET)
  • 長安 Chang'an = Consistantly Peace. Present day Xi'an, ancient capital of Han and Tang Dynasty the gateway to silk road.
Sorry, this one too famous. Can't use it :( -- Gsklee 3 November 2005 14:29 (CET)

Gee, I am a native Chinese ;)
I think this is the first time I meet a player in BM who is also a Chinese :) -- Gsklee 1 November 2005 17:39 (CET)
Nice to meet you. In fact I know there more ethic Chinese as well (mostly from Hong Kong). Old Grehk has some ;p. --Balley 1 November 2005 17:50 (CET)
No wonder its icon (LOL) -- Gsklee 1 November 2005 18:37 (CET)
Nice meeting another Chinese speaker here Gsklee. I have some online friends in Taiwan and visited them in my last trip to Taiwan, though they don't play BM. Denning
Good to meet you :) Seems like most East Asian players here are from Hong Kong. Probably due to its connection with English speaking community I think. -- Gsklee 2 November 2005 08:30 (CET)
Back to the topic. If you want to propose some Chinese names Balley, just write them down in Chinese. And maybe with their pinyins. -- Gsklee 2 November 2005 08:39 (CET)
Possibly, Another category will be overseas Chinese. I seen some from UK or US. --Balley 2 November 2005 09:05 (CET)
I've seen a couple of them from Singapore or Malaysia. --Denning 2 November 2005 09:27 (CET)

Suggestions sent to Gsklee by in-game messages

By Phelan

  • [ACCEPTED] City - "Gaston City" or just "Gaston"
Reason: Gaston was the name of the county I started in with the Adrian Empire; a medieval re-creation society that I dedicated 12 years to.
  • [ACCEPTED] City - "Chrysantalys"
Reason: A great mountain city that existed before written history currently records. Known for mining of preciuos and semi-preciuous gems. citizens are very distrustful of outsiders even those of their own realm, but viciuos fighters when protecting their home.
  • [ACCEPTED] City - "Samhain"
Reason: A great city named after summers end
