Mistress Nerta,

The preservation of the Ashes are of the utmost urgency as they are a key component of Ar Agyr's defences.

For repair of each of these items I will pay you 100 gold, and if the opportunity to improve them arises I'll reimburse you at full cost plus 25%.

Aibhlidhn passes Nerta the Coat of Tyranny.

Looking over the coat Nerta listens to the offer "Quite a story to this I'm sure... How'd you get it?"

“A brave young adventurer presented it to me as a gift, knowing my interest in such things. A prosaic tale to be sure, but a fond memory nonetheless.” Aibhlidhn passes Nerta the Cruel Ring of Melhed.

The woman freezes the ring in her palm while to the side a flickering apparition of a man seems to dance on the breeze. "This... This is part of the Imperial Regalia. Found by Fey Twix during a quest at the Fell Crossing. How did you get this? I thought all the items were destroyed in the sack of the Imperial Palace..."

A traveler by the name of Deve acquired it in some perilous adventure or other. He was unaware of its history so I would be intrigued to hear more.

The Old Man has a lot to say about the ring and he won't stop bothering me until I get this down so here you go:

The ring is part of history. Part of the tragedy of the continent.

The ring enters the story at the dawn of the Age of Blood when Emperor Tsu ordered it forged to honour the fallen champion of the north, Pontifex Argos of Melhed, Guardian of the Eternal Flame. Argos was slain at the Fell Crossing by the First Necromancer marking the beginning of the first invasion. The invasion ended with the death of that creature and from its staff the ring was forged. The dark copper spike at the base that had been driven into the earth to draw up the dreadful magic was cut free and worked in the heat of the Eternal Flame until it became that ring.

Officially Emperor Tsu included the ring in the Imperial Regalia though it was lost with the disappearance of the Emperor at the end of the Age of Blood. Fey Twix recovered the ring during the second invasion after battling with the Death Knight on the shores of Lake Salaman. But it was lost again during the Age of Ruin when the Tyrants burned the Imperial Palace during the reforging of Ar Agyr.

This ring is a symbol of many things. Of suffering, and cruelty but also our determination to forge something new from the ashes.

Be mindful of wearing it for too long, the First Necromancer is dead, but the Abyss will whisper promises.

Roleplay from Wren the Watcher

[A charcoal picture of a bird is scrawled in fair detail across the top of the parchment. There are a few lines of words below written in tiny, pointed script. If someone reads it to Nerta, she would hear as follows.]

Friend Nerta,

I found a small circle that shines, I think you lost it? I will hold it for you. Maybe it can be traded for the one the Old Man wants. Be safe in travels.

I miss you,
Wren the Watcher (Foederati)

"I'll meet you in Qual, no problem!", Orianna mutters to herself in a berating tone as she pushes her way to the peak of yet another hill and pauses to take a break. From here she had good vantage on much of the area, though certainly not all of it.

"Oh hush, it's hard to make friends if we don't meet people...", she replies to herself in a happier tone as she finds a log to rest on a moment, pushing a lock of red hair out of her eyes.

She's gotten used to talking to herself over the past few years, starting out as a way to alert animals she was near but later turning into something to keep her mind busy and feel less alone. Sometimes she didn't like what her other self had to say though...

"Meet people? We could have just told this Nerta where to find iron pellets, I mean by all the Gods we found them HERE! We could have just pointed her that direction... but noooooo", she mutters as she pulls off a boot to shake out some rocks that had been plaguing her feet the last while up the slope.

"What does Nerta even look like anyways? Qual is rather large...", she asks the question more in general than to herself and looks around, hoping the world might give an answer. Not surprisingly, nothing but a distant bird call answers her and she sighs.

It was dark, she was tired, and she had no idea where she was going. Deciding this was as good a place as any to camp, she sets up her tent and begins airing out her gear, washing up in a nearby cool stream before huddling around the large fire she'd built. Maybe the light and smoke would attract her quarry, maybe it would attract those mean Thalmarkin guards again, either way it was keeping her warm for now and that was far more important.

I have a book of Daimon Banishing, and three of Monster Hunting. No Dragons Tears yet, alas, but the more of these books we can find, the better we can cleanse the areas around a locus, I think.

Power

Dodging a patrol of Thalmarkin militia who seemed to have someone in their care, Nerta returns to the small camp. The humming energy of Sihari the Female Thunder still arcs between her fingers, shocking randomly as she shoulders her pack. The sage had been able to repair more than a few of the strange items, but they were still ratty, broken things. It would be enough to get paid though.

Settling next to the small fire the woman tilts her head back and rubs her neck. It pays well, working for the Patricians, but.... it was more trouble than it's worth.

The cozy campsite had just the three of them: Wren is on her usual perch atop a log, the Old Man's book in hand while Jacinda had out a practice axe near the small set of tents. Fidgeting with her cloak, the woman eyes Jacinda and sighs. So much for taking it off tonight.

The Wren is perched unmoving, consumed by the text she reads, oblivious to all about her. The warm fire on her face and cool darkness to her back are unknown to the frail-looking woman as her mind is transported far away reading the words of the Old Man Aldo. She sees mountain passes, dark crypts, strange writings on doors; feels the tension of indecision and the surge of certainty.

She had been many long days to the south seeking stones, and had found Nerta and Jacinda by chance as she followed Sihari's thunderous presence back north from the southern forests, wondering if the woman followed the lines of power they sought to reinforce. Sitting now with trusted friends around a campfire, she felt once again able to delve into the incredible words of the Book.

Rrrrrumblurble

A sound of displeased urgency emanates from within the brown-haired woman. Blink-blink. She tugs at her mind like one would a worm from the earth to turn its focus outward and investigate the noise. Oh. Darkness is here. Need to eat.

She looks about to see Nerta looking irritated and tired, cracking her neck and many shoulders.

"We eat, Nerta friend?" she pipes.

Rumbling?

A pat at her belly, Nerta spies her sister and smiles faintly, "If that rumble was you I'd say so. Did you forget to eat today again?"

Shifting up from her seat on the hard pack of forest clearing, Nerta fishes in her pack for some pots and pans. "Soup? Or shall we roast some of the hunt?"

Wren carefully places the book down on her comfortable log, giving it a fond pat, before hopping down to join Nerta near the fire. "Fire is good tonight, much wood. Roast and smoke!" the birdlike woman chirps excitedly.

Smoke.

A roast wouldn't be too bad and could smoke a few of the kills for later.... Not that they'd really need to worry, finding something to eat was as simple as going out hunting.

"Alright, I have a few Leapers from earlier and they should be good eating, I think I left them hanging by my tent." Digging around in her pack, Nerta fishes out some tools and offers a bone knife to her sister with a questioning eyebrow.
