After Mending (when Willem reflects on the War and Ilya)
Willem wondered when the insanity would stop. First, Eston. Then Darka. Then the Barony of Makar. Monsters and Undead. What was going on? And when would peace return? All he wanted, at the moment, was to be back in Menedor, looking out on the lake. He detested, as did most of his men, the arresting and hangings to bring peasants back into line. Some of his men were laughing as they did it. Willem had a little one to one talk with both of them. They didn't laugh after the talk.
He remembered mending his clothing the other day. It seemed like a week ago. Scout reports, paperwork, arresting the locals, trying to find an hour to rest. It was all a blur. Then he remembered why he was mending. He was waiting for Ilya to come by and he wanted to make a good impression. He'd always felt awkward around women, besides his mum. But in his correspondence with Ilya, he could discern that she was more than a woman. Besides being a Dame of Menedor, she had some fighter in her. He should step out of his camp and look for her, but he couldn't find it within him at the moment.
They'd meet. He knew that. He just didn't know quite what to do. Probably just talk of Menedor and then of military strategy, but he'd have to bluff his way through some of that. He did have that one small bottle of wine from his father's wine cellar stashed away. He hoped that it had traveled well.
Willem was dusting off the bottle of wine when one of the camp boys came to his tent, bringing a message. Willem immediately saw that it had to do with Black Army orders. As he read it, he started to re-wrap the bottle. The Black Army was off to another region. If Ilya came by, she wouldn't find him today.
