The Ravaging Horde of Joppo

Joppo is a city on the west coast of Beluaterra. This is the chronicles of it's sad tale, as told by peasants that were there at the time. I, a local priest, spent my time trying to calm the local population, but there are some horrors no man can face - when you have read this story, fear the coming of the undead, for you will see what they can do to a realm.

History

Joppo was seceded from the realm of Mesh by it's duke following a disagreement. What it was, we were not sure of. We were merely peasants - following the whim of our lord was not a choice, it was an obligation, and those that thought otherwise were exiled from the lands in the hundreds, causing great unrest to the regions of Mesh and their inhabitants. We lived our lives, strengthened by the new realm, with it's capital near us, and we rejoiced. All the hurts of our lives were lessened because we were cared for in a way that we never knew before. Though waves of soldiers, husbands, uncles, sons kept leaving our capital again and again, we never paid heed to the rumours that the realm was doomed, until the great hordes of an avenging Mesh army came to our doorsteps.

The Siege

A great battle occurred upon the walls of our city, with all our manpower gathered to come to the aid and drive the aggressors from our lands. We failed that day, and many were killed on both sides, but our trials were only just beginning. Even as the Mesh army set about claiming control of the region, we resisted furiously, many peasants being slaughtered. For my part, I offered a sanctuary for those hurt in the fighting for our sides. perhaps I should have helped the Mesh troops also - I certainly would have had I known what horrors would shortly follow, for we should band together lest we be destroyed.

The Rising of the Scourge

As so many soldiers had fallen, we expected the worst. We were not able to bury them, and yet more fell daily, vast numbers of soldiers fallen, and yet more deaths from the rampaging troops destroying the city. Whole districts lay in flames, yet we would not surrender our individuality. We were bound to this realm, it gave us our identity. Generations would remember this as their home and Mesh was destroying it out of greed. But this was not our greatest horror. For through the streets marched our greatest fear. At first a single undead knight, yet a terrible thing to behold. His skeletal frame walked through the street wielding a claymore, but one lone undead was no match for a strong warrior of mesh, we thought. But as he walked through the streets he called out in an incomprehensible dialect, and the corpses rose where they lay. He amassed hundreds, coming out of houses, raising off the ground, killing more of use to add to their ranks. But as if this group of 500 was not enough, peasants fleeing a hulk of flesh calling yet more undead to his cause arrived at our small temple. But even as we ran in fear, choosing the oppression of the Meshians over the ravages of the undead, another group emerged, the largest, and army of 600 undead creatures from the detritus of the battle faced the Meshian army. The Meshian army braced against the undead, but they fought in the streets, demoralized, injured and unfortified, but were easily overwhelmed by the force much larger than them. But that force was only the beginning...
