Proposed New Rank Structure

  • Archbishop of the Church: won't be possible. We don't have a prophet any more, so we can not change the rank of High Priest.
  • Cardinal: in the normal cleric hierarchy, they are second to the pope. So do we want to place them below the Archbishops?
  • Archbishop: an archdiocese was usually an important city, and the archdiocese ruled over smaller dioceses. So in BM, we are talking about the seize of a realm, with the Capital as Archdiocese.
  • Guardian of the Church: Sartan is and always will be a warrior God, and great Swordfighting should be encouraged among its noble followers. I think this should remain the highest full-member rank.
  • Last but not least, all with all I fear it will start to look too much like the Catholic structure, and I wouldn't want to just copy it.

(Just a view things that strikes me at first sight.) --Roy 22:28, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

  • Archbishop might be possible I think as long as the existing title can be modified, though it might mean one holder has to demote themselves while the rank is changed.
  • We could rank Cardinals above archbishop then. of course, we aren't catholic so why not keep it as proposed or just change the title to say, missionary or Deacon maybe.
  • in the anglican tradition an archbishop is of an important city. such as the archbishops of york, canterbury and westminster. hence for IG purposes I would imagine an archdiocese would consist only of very important duchy cities and their regions such as Niel and any cities with a very large percentage of followers as well as a sizeable temple.
  • we can put guardian as the highest member rank then
  • since the title bishop has been used before and deacon and prior are already in use we borrow a lot of terms anyway. we have to get our terms from somewhere and as long as we're careful it shouldn't look overly modelled on christianity.

Friendly non-Sartanian here.

A lot of the Christian words for important positions came from the Romans (e.g. Prince coming from "Princeps" - the First (among the order) - and was adapted to the counts palatine (roughly means a companion of the palace) who exercised the right of bannum in the name of the Emperor) and Bishop comesm from the Greek 'episkopos', which roughly means overseer. With that in mind it is the right kind of term for a priest with authority over a geographical area. Archbishop is simply a bishop with authority over other bishops. That said, the more archbishops you had the more important you were but also the more likely to be divided you were. Geraldus Cambrensis, an influential priest in Wales who gave up a lot of chances for advancement, fought for his entire life to see a bishopric in Wales granted the "traditional" metropolitan status of Archbishopric. He was thwarted because the English did not want the Welsh to have this major move for independence.

I just wanted to say that last bit because I could. But seriously, Archpiskop. Do it. --Aerywyn 06:58, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
