Talk:Introduction/Choosing a realm

Hrm. I hate to be territorial about this, but this really doesn't fit with the rest of the roleplay, either in style or format. I was very careful not to specify the gender of the player's character, and not to mention real realms or islands.

Obviously, I can't get away without mentioning islands, but it might be a good idea to set this aside as a separate roleplay, occurring at a different time. --Dolohov 26 July 2005 15:51 (CEST)

Then again, having something is better than having nothing. People make modifications to articles rather than writing a new one from scratch. ;-) --Tom 26 July 2005 17:25 (CEST)
For choosing a realm, it's kind of inevitable that you will have to bring up which islands there are. I was a bit iffy about adding the realms in the beginning, although you could change this to "The combined armies of the Far Eastern or the Southern Island realms" without a great deal of fuss. The other problems are merely stylistic. DorianGray 27 July 2005 12:04 (CEST)
""Apart from that, it's just like any other island. You'd best be starting off somewhere else, though. If you don't have experience somewhere else, no one would think of taking you."" Why discourage emigration to one of the most heavily, if not the most underpopulated continents? There's no reason newbs should not go there. I went there as soon as I had 14 days in the game, I know many others who have. "No one would think of taking you"? That's bullcrap. -Chénier 01:00, 22 September 2008 (CEST)
I think it's intended to be an IC explanation for why you can't start there. --Anaris 17:48, 22 September 2008 (CEST)
I see... Then that's a good reason for it, but still, you cannot deny that this is telling people "Oh noes, don't go to BT, its a bunch of elitists and oligarchs who will turn you back". How to reformulate it to remove this, I wouldn't know.... -Chénier 21:45, 22 September 2008 (CEST)
It could be explained that the seas are so dangerous they require bigger ships to reach it, and hence nobody would give anyone a free boat ride there? -Chénier 14:31, 23 September 2008 (CEST)
I already changed it with a relatively accepted reason. --Vita Family 16:59, 23 September 2008 (CEST)
Don't take it personally, its just that I'm a BT player and that we are seriously underpopulated around here, and newbies are always greeted with open arms by pretty much every realm. -Chénier 19:34, 23 September 2008 (CEST)
There are really two problems here. First, new players shouldn't really be going to BT, as it's the testing island. They should get some time on the stable servers, and realize what they're getting into before they jump onto the monster/testing island. i.e.: There could be serious bugs, you will get buggy/beta code tested on you, (at least once development gets back underway...), you will periodically get invaded by overwhelmingly powerful monsters that "reset" the island, etc. Second, how many new players do you think really read the wiki manual before making a character? I know I sure didn't. I didn't bother looking at it until I had been in the game for nearly two months, I think. Finally, you need an IC explanation on this page to explain these OOC reasons. The simplest way is that the locals don't like new nobles. Or perhaps the rugged frontier land is too harsh for young nobles, so the noble families refuse to support young nobles there, and what noble could possibly get along with help from his rich family... Also, the term "new" nobles is really not a good one. You're not a "new" noble, you've been one your whole life. You're just young or inexperienced. --Indirik 21:40, 23 September 2008 (CEST)
