Superordinate

I noticed in your laws (after being directed there from the recent article about Haughty) that you use superordinate. While this is technically proper English, it is uncommon and at first glance appeared to be a mis-translation - being the opposite of subordinate. Scientists and philosophers would apparently use the words commonly, but most of us simple folk would not. (I had to look it up to see if it was a real word.) I would suggest rewording it to:

Disrespecting superiors and insulting comrades are considered acts of high treason, punishable by being thrown into our Holy Volcano.

Just a suggestion. -- OOC Habap 20:25, 28 March 2007 (CEST)

Noted and changed - agreed with you as the word superordinate is a bit arcane. I must have felt the need to be a precocious narcissist. --Jezralhm 20:34, 28 March 2007 (CEST)

Adventurers and Commoners

There's been quite a few messages recently about Adventurers, Commoners and their place in things. The King has deemed this to be something that shouldn't be discussed on the OOC net. I would think due to the sheer volume of postings (60+ postings in less then 22 hours), that it is important, culturally-wise, to Darka. To sum up points I've seen so far (remember that these quotes may not reflect the player's personal beliefs):

  • "The adventures that work under Darkan banner are freemen, not outlaws..we should treat them better for hunting in our realm monsters..." (attrib. Lavigna)
  • "These "Adventurers" you are calling are commoners, nobles can do to commoners whatever they want or please." (attrib. Paradigm)
  • "...as long as they are polite towards nobles and don't do anything wrong, I don't see a reason to arrest them." (attrib. Sardius)
  • "While commoners are commoners and nobles have their rights, you should keep in mind that sometimes a commoner can be working for another noble, running errands for him or her and interfering with said commoner might well anger the noble. Not so much for arresting a commoner, but for interfering in his or her personal matters." (attrib. Amaarent)
  • "Commoners are only good for three things! Using as soldiers, taxing and taking care of our estates! Anything else, and they've probably got a little too much gold on their hands and need more taxing." (attrib. TwinBlade)
  • "Unless a commoner provokes me I refuse to dirty my hands by having to deal with their filth. Even though they are pathetic creatures, I can see the usefulness in allowing them to wander our lands provided they show us respect." (attrib. Sebastian)
  • "Others, however, recognize that without the common man there would be no food on our table and no sword in our hands and, just maybe, a plague of monsters and undead in our lands, however unlikely that sounds." (attrib. Severn)
  • "In my region if they pass here and i ntoice they're the adventure types I invite them for a job of monster huntin and treasure trading. So in Eurotan they should be treated as it's workers if they didn't abuse anyone ythen i won't stand jsut going in and arresting them to have some fun or even "by mistake"." (attrib. Angadialas)
  • "That is absolutely b------t that every single noble would treat all commoners as a trash. There ain't no two identical people behaving just same way under the sun. There were nobles that kept their peasant's side no matter what was the issue." (attrib. Yasha)
  • "I think Adventurers are just peasants wanting to play knights." (attrib. Solrac)

Related issues are with the stated intention of the Judge to release any freeman jailed without due process and cause. This has brought up the question of how it impacts a noble's status:

  • "If she chooses to release them immediately when the noble ordering the arrest does not provide justification for the imprisonment, then it is hardly within our authority to question her actions." (attrib. Kende)
  • "A noble decided that this adventurer should be thrown into prison for whatever reason he sees fit. You then slap him in the face by giving him a public reprimand and releasing the adventurer. So in fact you are considering this commoner and noble equals. They are not, and if you think you are then I will seriously doubt your nobility." (attrib. Paradigm)
  • "We must take care that no peasant will spit on our rank of nobility." (attrib. Baril)

So, in short:

  • Adventurers are commoners. Not nobles, and thus can be arrested for any reason (or close to it).
  • Adventurers are useful commoners. While not nobles, they serve a good purpose in Darka and shouldn't be arrested withou due cause.
