As the great beast charged, Morgan braced his boarspear. The mighty creature rushed straight onto the point, driving the spear deep into its breast. Still it advanced, bending, and then breaking the crossbar of the spear, forcing its way against the pain of the spear, forcing the spear deeper into its body. It slowed as it moved forward, but move it did.

Eventually Morgan abandoned the spear, leaping to one side and drawing sword and dagger. He paused, watching the beast for a moment. Even with the eight-foot spear impaling it, the creature was eager for the fight, and whirled to face him. He pressed his attack, raining mostly ineffectual blows down upon the creature's head, biding his time, waiting for his opportunity. Finally it came, and as the beast snapped at the blade of the sword, he thrust forward with the dagger, plunging it into the creature's eye.

It roared in pain, but still sought his blood. He was driven back by the ferocity of its renewed assault, but he continued to fight calmly, defending himself again until once more the dagger thrust forward, this time taking the beast's other eye.

Blinded now, and with its nostrils awash with its own blood, it presented little threat. Morgan stepped back and watched it thrash and lash out. He cleaned and sheathed sword and dagger, and fetched his crossbow. He loaded it and crouched, aiming towards the beast's head. As it roared in pain he fired, the bolt striking the beast in the roof of the mouth, penetrating straight through to the brain, killing it instantly.

With the beast no longer bellowing, he could now make out a whimpering from deeper in the cave. Lighting a torch, he moved forward, hunting for the source of the noise. It was not long before he found the boy, a young fisherman, taken from his coracle on the lake.

Morgan cast a critical eye over the boy. He was too wounded to recover, and Morgan drew his dagger to finish him quickly. As he was poised with the blade at the boy's throat, something caught his eye, a glinting, something reflecting the light from his torch. Leaving the whimpering boy to his pain, Morgan reached for the piece of metal. It was not what he expected at all, armour; plate of an old design, fashioned from some metal he didn't recognise. He whistled slowly as he examined it. This was a rare treasure, and would fetch quite a price if he could find the right buyer.

The boy's moaning interrupted his thinking. Morgan turned and in an instant drew his dagger and slashed it across the boy's throat. "Be quiet," he said as the boy died.
