The Splendid Sword of Alex is a claymore of unusual design, with a heavier blade than its size would suggest. This allows it to batter through thicker armor than most other swords, cracking plate armor and shattering bones with every swing, which in turn necessitates the larger than normal pommel to offset the added weight. Because of this, it is sometimes known as the Noble Killer, capable of threatening even heavily armored knights. Gold inlays decorate the cross-guard and pommel, patterns twisting like vines across the metal hilt and a filagree forming the letter A on the pommel. The grip is in turn made of ebon wood, and covered with shagreen made from the skin of a warhorse dyed the color of blood. A matching blood red scabbard carries the sword across the wearer's back so the sword can be easily drawn when needed.
There is speculation that the sword is named after Alex, of House Exiled, briefly the High Marshal of Itorunt, possibly so named by a successor, or indeed by one of the High Marshal's foes as he was slain in battle with Caligus.
