By all accounts the sacking of Karbala city caught Fontan completely by surprise. The Sirion forces moved into the region of Al Amarah, just as they had the weeks before, and started a Takeover over the region and did some looting. But rather then continue that, almost the majority of the forces then moved on to the neighboring city of Karbala.

Suddenly it was revealed that Sirion had brought 22 siege engines. This had been done with the utmost secrecy, in case there were any spies. No orders had been given to the armies to pick up siege engines. In fact, no orders had ever foretold of the attack on Karbala until the very last minute.

The city had a reasonable amount of militia, but no other troops to speak of. While the walls of Karbala are massive, the overwhelming Sirion forces aided by their numerous siege engines easily broke through the walls and swarmed the defenders.
