Maru, A Loney Wanderer

Departure

The tent was dark despite the waning sun. Maru sat rigid at his makeshift desk, thoughts racing through his mind. He desperately wished to be with his mother, or his father, or anyone that was close to him, because even though his words had bite, it was really only a compensation for the way he felt inside.

It had been 5 years ago. Sun beat down upon the dry docks of Idapur and a fifty year old Kazuma stood a the dock facing his son. His hair was grey and his face was lined with age, though the pronouncement of his jaw hadn't diminished and so he retained his handsome features. Under his silk garments was skin that was once like iron, but was now just skin, coating an old body. What strength Kazuma used during the great Aenilian wars was now gone and he only had his towering height and and scars of battle as evidence of his ordeal. Though while his great strength had gone, he had gained something far more valuable: wisdom.

Across from Kazuma, a young boy at age fifteen stood, even though he stood at six feet and one inch, he was still dwarved by his outrageously tall father. The boy looked uncertain, he had not received the physique that his father had but his body was certainly not weak. While a youthful Kazuma may have looked like a roaring lion, the boy looked like a lynx: smaller and more graceful. Though this lynx was not a full lynx yet, this was a mere child, a scared child. The boy watched his fathers hand lift and rest on his shoulder.

"Maru, I will miss you so much. Bring pride to our name, but more importantly," and Kazuma's eyes hardened. "Search yourself, you have a great future ahead of you, but only if you find a place where you are comfortable to simply be you."

Maru tried to hold back tears but he couldn't help it, tears gushed forth in a silent attack of sorrow. Very quietly, he said, "I will miss you too, father.."

Kazuma reached out and grabbed his son into a gigantic bear hug. Before he let go, he removed a small golden sphere from his pocket and clutched it into his son's hand. "This is an Aenilian artifact, Maru, I want you to have it".

It felt so fast for Maru: one second he had been in his fathers arms, and then he had been on the ship waving to his father. Silently he clutched the golden sphere in his hand. "I will miss you too, father..." he repeated, this time alone.

Description

Maru is a very insecure and unstable man following the departure from his father, Kazuma. As a result of this pain, Maru appears as a very bitter man who tries to find fault with everything, especially when there is no fault. While he appears like this, the only thing perpetuating this personality is a deep insecurity. As a young boy, Maru was fairly normal, perhaps slightly dependant on figures like his father.
