Terrain

A rocky highland heath, Saradic is the keystone of the north. The land is bordered on the east by the Fiddleford passes into the Barony of Makar and the mountain city of Belegrond, shadowed by Mount Moramroth. To the south, the rocky highland meath of Saradic begins mellowing until it becomes the open flowing fields of Dondor. To the west and southwest, the rocky scarps of Saradic do not soften as much and instead become the rolling hills of Melias and Hawthorne, with scrub forests stretching from the Hawthorne Wood for some small distance onto the moors of Saradic. Finally, to the northwest, lies Slantrax -- a land much like Saradic -- savage and rocky and battered by the sea.

Saradic - Economy

Although a number of the common folk make a meager living from fishing in Saradic, the northern sea coast is generally too rocky, rough, and wracked by heavy crashing seatides to permit economic fishing, much less any kind of deep sea port. This same rocky seashore, however, is perfect for hunting seal and walrus, the pelts and ivory of which sell for significant amounts in lands farther south.

Although trees are few and far between here, leaving the land to be scoured by the cold northern winds, the people of Saradic largely make their living from subsistence farms scattered about the land. In the numerous upland lochs, tradition has long been for farmers to build a secure crannog (artificial island) in the middle of the loch. These crannogs are safe havens within which the many sheepherding farmers of Saradic keep their families and livestock safe at night. This tradition proved invaluable during the Viking Wars, as Saradic was the site of many a bloody battle.

With long harsh winters and vicious freezing rains in the spring and fall, Saradic highlanders find themselves with lots of time to themselves while hunkered down shivering in their sod-roofed cottages and crannogs. They spend this time carving the ivory hunted from walruses or pounding the readily available surface copper into intricately wrought brooches, torcs, and platters. In the spring, these goods are sold to traveling merchants in exchange for salt, dyes, and other necessities of life.

Saradic - History

For more than five years, Johann De Bardt was the Count of Saradic, appointed on the recommendation of King Andrew of Eston, by Duke Torik of Hawthorne. Having joined the Bureaucratic Corps of Eston not long after being appointed to Count, Sir Johann was an assiduous and attentive lord. During his lordship, Sir Johann granted knightly fiefs to the following knights:

  • Sir Lemonade
  • Sir Reinhard
  • Dame Danica

Prior to Johann de Bardt's enfeoffment as count, the title was formerly held for five years by Count Dave, who abdicated after questions regarding his benevolent if absentee stewardship. Before Count Dave, Leonardo Augusta was Count of Saradic for another four years. Before Leonardo, Bharata Pobodnik was Count of Saradic for only a year. Before Bharata, the Viking Wars were in full force and no man held title for quite some time. The last recorded Count of Saradic before the Viking Wars was Femevau Calaen, of whom not much is now known.

After Johann de Bardt's abdicated suzerainty of Saradic to be appointed Count of Melias by Duke Kealan of Hawthorne, he recommended that his loyal knight Sir Lemonade be made count of Saradic -- a recommendation that was honored.

Count Lemonade was a good lord the region, continuing the policies of his former liege Johann until the abdication of King Christopher in favor of King Artemis. King Artemis wished to appoint Christopher count of Saradic to see to his family estates and Count Lemonade was persuaded to take lordship of Agnilar.

During Darka's treacherous betrayal of Eston and rapid annexation of regions, Agnilar was lost to Eston. Overcome with grief, Count Lemonade took his own life.

Saradic - Military

Fiercely independent, the hunting and shepherd folk of Saradic are reknowned for their accurate hunting crossbows. When the levy is raised, these citizen soldiers form a potent group of mixed infantry known as the "Elite Peltasts" -- prized by those canny troop leaders who prefer adaptable and sturdy troops.

Saradic - Religion

The people of Saradic are almost universally fervent believers in Venerism, with the single primitive temple to the Venerable Order of the Citadel being the central religious shrine of the land.
