The Legendary House of Sanjuro

...In the Beginning...

Page I of the Sanjuro Family Archives, located in the family mansion in Skalk, Atamara -

(date and time unknown)-Recorded here are the last words of Rokurota the sea pirate, and the first of Rokurota, Noble of Atamara. It was today that my family began a new life apart from the sea. My ship, The Green Eyebrow, ran aground on the shores of this continent, the weight of my plundered gold having bourne her down upon reefs that I've sailed over a thousand times when the gold found on ships of the sea was less plentiful. I've taken this as a sign from my ancestors that it is time to begin anew. The hull of my ship lies in tatters on the shore, and the menacing face on her prow lies just above the waterline, the waves lapping at the Eyebrow from which she garnered her name. We were heavy with treasure from the sacking of a trader bound for Abington, and on the way home to rejoin our home armada. My family is on board and in fair health. My wife, Yuki, my son Toshiro, who was given a deep scar on his face during the taking of our treasure, and Misa, my daughter, all are here. The local nobility, seeing our wealth, have welcomed us into their Keep until such time as we can find more permanent accommodations. There is a city by the name of Skalk nearby which we make for on the morn. The land here is fertile, a kind of deep rich black soil that apparently can grow any seed dropped into it to full bloom in a season. It is here I will raise my sons and they theirs. We have been the scourge of the Western Seas for so long that it seems right that we now move to become Rulers of the Land as well. I will pass on the secrets of the seas, the Sanjuro Style of Swordplay, and the legendary arsenal of our Clan. My descendants will learn the way of the foot and horse, not just that of the sea and wind. We will use our fortune to buy a future for many more Sanjuro. To my children and children's children who may be reading this, you may mark this very moment as the beginning. From this moment you are the wellspring, from here you will carry forth to bring honor and fame to the Sanjuro Clan.

The Founding of a Dynasty

From these beginnings the Sanjuro Clan did indeed grow. Misa was married off to an influential Perdanite Trader, while Rokurota and Yuki settled in Skalk and began Toshiro's schooling in the arts of war and the ways of the conitnent. He was a quick and adept learner, a man with both an eye for the future and an arm for the sword. It was not Rokurota but rather Toshiro that would, as he aged, make the name Sanjuro well known through his battles. He grew in stature until the Cagilan Empire one day awarded him the status of full nobility, and a small parcel of land outside Skalk from which to begin his ascent into landed nobility. He was prolific; he was married to a local girl of high esteem and together they produced four sons: Kuwebatake, Tsubaki, Gorobei, and young Inokichi. Toshiro lives on to this day in very old age, his glory having subsided now. He acts as guardian of the family estate, and any time the militia is called up in Skalk you will find him commanding a battalion. Many a wandering thug from the East has overestimated the brittleness of his bones and underestimated his skill with a weapon.

Stories of the Sanjuro Clan

Kuwebatake-Oldest of the Sanjuro brothers. He spent a small amount of time serving Caligus,. but at the time is was badly mismanaged. He grew frustrated and retired to the family mansion. He oversees the real business aspect of the family plot and trains daily with Toshiro. He is still a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield and usually is the one responsible for the bruises that the other boys sport when they return from visits home.

Gorobei-2nd in line to inherit the family seal from Toshiro. Gorobei fained fame early in his career for himself and the Sanjuro Clan. He joined a fledgling realm on the East Island called Winterfell. It was under constant attack and his prestige quickly grew as his reputation for his fighting skill spread across the hills of southern Perdan. Since he was one of but a few nobles there, the King Malvaen (whose loss the Sanjuros still mourn) made him the Banker for what was to be a very brief period until the realm was reincorporated into Perdan. As a last farewell, Malvaen held a tournament right before massive numbers of Perdan regions were to storm the city of Partora and take it back for their own. Gorobei, against all odds, defeated all at the tournament in swordfighting. He had but a 15% skill level yet in the final match he bested the mighty Itthordai, whose skill at the time was estimated around 85% or higher. It was a miracle and a feat so amazing that even Gorobei didn't realize the significance of it until some time later. He followed Malvaen into joining Perdan, where he was given a heroes welcome. He spent some time there, roaming the battlefields and traveling north to south, east to west in search of battle. He was made Baron of the Perdan Mines and he served in that capacity for a very long time. He still is very proud of the dark 'Mines Brew' ale brewery that he built there and is still a member of SADA. He took up the tools and secrets of the infiltrator, and was not very successful at it at first. He was captured and tortured first by Ibladesh, then Ubent. It left him scarred and unable to hold public office. He left for Beluaterra to heed his brother Inokichi's call for aid in Midas Chia. He served in Midas Chia as Instigator Especial, spy, bodyguard for Inokichi. Now he returns to the East Continent to search for the answers to the riddles posted by the gods there. He will try his hand again in the muddled waters of that island...

Tsubaki-3rd oldest, and arguably the most dangerous of the Sanjuro brothers. Tsubaki grew to be the largest of the four brothers, and his skill with his sword has become renown across the land. He is the only brother to have never moved out of a realm, his home has always been the Cagilan Empire. After leaving the tutelage of his father he joined under the CE flag and learned the ways of the Empire, taking as much knowledge as he could from other nobles such as Bethany, Shaun, Zadar Nargath and especially Koradji. His first month of activity in the realm he witnessed and participated in the storming of Strombran and the fall of Lamar. As time passed he became more and more sure of himself, and was appointed General. Since his ascension to the post he has led triumphant expeditions into lands both near and far from his home borders. Although brash as a younger man, he prides himself on his dignity and grace to his fallen enemies. He fights for the just cause and will never betray an ally. He directed the retaking of Tarasac from the Drachenwald usurpers and was given the city's Dukedom, the family's first, as his reward for bringing the city back under the Cagilan flag. He also directed the retaking of Nida after Carelia abandoned her CE brethren. Tsubaki serves as Mountain Lord, Dragon's Head in the The Order of Ered Luin, a guild of his founding. After taking a week off to meditate in his forefathers' dojo in Skalk, Tsubaki returned and found that he had been elected Prime Minister of the Cagilan Empire.

Inokichi-The youngest and most well traveled of the four brothers, he started in Tara. As a young man, he chafed at the realm's Tyranny government, so he left for Beluaterra in search of action and adventure. He joined Old Grehk and stayed there for a while, making a good friend in Vagabond of the Cheung family. After he received a call for help from some old friends in Tara, he returned there under the new leadership of Max Pittimenkia. It was here that Ino gained his skill as a horse master. He can ride any horse and led many a thundering charge across the plains of Eastern Atamara. He became good friends with Leonid and Victor, both excellent Generals in their own right. There he briefly served as General until a bout of sickness sidelined him. When Max abdicated his throne, Inokichi was primed as the next ruler of Tara. Most of the realm voted for him, but their votes were wasted because of an unknown rule of the Gods that one family may not have members of a ruling council in two different realms on the same continent. Sickened to his core, and in a bout of unfathomable despair, Ino wandered the shores around Sullenport, drunk and rambling, screaming at some times, weeping at others. In a turn of events that would have please Rokurota, he was shanghaied by a pirate crew and taken off to sea. It was the best thing for him. He spent a few months at sea, first vomiting the liquor out of his system, then fighting every pirate aboard to prove his bloodline. After taking in twice the haul that the pirates had taken in a month in just a single week, he challenged the pirate captain to a duel for his fleet. He had the captain's neck at his blade when the captain's second bludgeoned him from the shadows. He was out cold. When he awoke he was on a sandy beach in Beluaterra. He was informed it was Midas Chia and he was just outside the city limits of Grehk, the capital. He managed to struggle into the chambers of government and introduce himself to the dictator ime. He was informed of the realm's status. It had just lost a powerful General, Arathorn. Inokichi volunteered to the realm immediately for the position if they wanted to win. Much to his surprise, the gambit worked and he started work almost immediately as the General of Midas Chia. He led them to some success, and called in his brother to act as a bodyguard and saboteur for his new home. Midas slowly died. It was never able to muster sufficient force to take and hold any of Luz de Bia's lands. When all was lost and the land overrun by enemies Ino packed his bags and headed north to Fronen where he until recently served as Count of Bisana. The life of constant battle left Inokichi world weary, until he discovered a host of ancient texts in Tarasac whilst visiting his brother. He was touring the Guildhouse of The Order of Ered Luin and he came across a sealed box. Seeing as how it was one of many, Tsubaki made the chest a gift. Ino opened it upon his return to Bisana, and inside were the Tomes of the Eight-religious texts that would lead him to found Octarianism. The religious life was not for him however, and he went back to his warrior ways becoming a Hero. He was recently appointed as the Marquis of Jyl

Takezo-Only son of Gorobei, although he has never met his father. He started out of the family mansion in Skalk as a member of the Cagilan Empire at age 17, riding immediately for to meet his uncle Tsubaki at the battlefront. He took part in the retaking of Nida from Carelia as part of his early actions.
