Hot in the snow
Posted 2005-04-23

(In a blizzard on some mountain)

Dakthohol tried to gain control over his chattering teeth by biting them hard together. But it had little effect on his shaking body. More comfort was there in the large blue cape but it was not enough to shield his naked body from the hauling wind and the stabbing snow and hail did not improve the feeling. It had been foolish of him not to have found some close before he ventured into the mountains. But who was he to know. He did not remember and besides he had not met any people save the old woman in the shed and it had been so hot the previous days. Right from the time he had washed ashore now more days since than he remembered. Well it could not be much over a fortnight, but it seemed ages. He moved a bit to get better shelter from the stone he sad behind and an icy, shooting pain went through his ankles. His toes had long been num and was beginning to show an unpleasant dark colour. He had to get moving soon or at least some heat. Maybe he could use the flame for heat. It had given him night vision. It had to work. Could he just warm himself little it would be heavenly.

He started to concentrate and tried to remember how he had managed to get the night vision, which he still had - such power! He concentrated but it was hard the cold and shaking did not make it easy and he started to drift of into sleep. He sat up strait he had to concentrate if he fell asleep he would most likely not wake up again. Concentrate again. This time he found himself entering into himself and found the box again and this time looked a bit closer at it. There was a little pyramid on top of it and it was at the top of this he saw a little bright flame or actually more like a star sparkling for his eyes only. He carefully took hold of it carefully and instantly felt its warmth. It was very pleasant!

Slowly he started to stretch it out so that it would fill his hole body. Right out to the tip of his toes. He felt his body starting to get warmer and warmer and he did not have to stretch that much in the start. It kind of grew slowly. Soon it he could feel his toes and fingers again. The tingling sensation that soon grew painful was only pleasant and much to prefer over the cold numness. It was really getting to be quite comfortable. Why had he not thought of this before? Actually he could see the ice in beard starting to melt and the warmth made his head ache. Maybe he should stop now this was just fine. He focused inside again and tried to stop the star from growing but he could not reach the edge and light is not really a substance you can pull. Slowly panic stated to creep up on him. This was getting to hot. He could feel the cape getting wet from the snow melting on his shoulders. He was beginning to sweat heavily and his head felt as it was going to explode soon. He had to shot the heat down he had to get rid of it. He stood up and threw of the cape to try to cool him down. It was definitely an improvement but it did not last long. Soon he could hear the snow under his feet starting to melt hissingly. It was becoming unbearable. It had to stop! NOW!

He had to get it out, had to try to push it out. He concentrated and tough blinded by the bright start started to push it. He could fell his hands burning and smell the roasting flesh. But the star was moving. He pushed harder - harder. He felt the star, and with it the heat, shoot from him as he pushed it out, hitting the stone. He passed out...

A sharp stone was chafing into his back as he came to himself. He was could and soaked in the melted snow and a fine layer of snow was beginning to build on him. He stood up but had to bend over and vomit as his head was killing him. This was not good. He looked and found his cape by the stone and sought shelter behind it again. It was very warm and the surface looked like it had been melted. As he touched it he felt great pain shoot through his hands. The looked as they had been terribly burned. Was swollen and running and did not look pleasant. Dakthohol tried to relieve the pain by putting his hands into some snow but it did not last long. As he wrapped himself in the cape his thought to himself that this power was not something to play with. It would likely take great effort to get it under control. But at least the stone eradicated some heat. Maybe it would keep him warm during the storm. As the storm weakened Dakthohol could be seen hiding behind the now cool stone, beaten but alive. He had survived the blizzard the only sacrifice being two severely burned hands...
