To Arms!

One of the many “choices”, or boxer or briefs conundrums you may face during your stay in beautiful and sunny BattleMaster is the type of unit you will be suiciding endlessly again and again into those bad people over there. It may not seem like a complicated choice, but that is because I have not explained its complexities to you yet.

You have as many as five choices depending on this factor or that: Infantry, Archers, Mixed Infantry, Calvary, and Special Forces, within which each will have their own statistics. Infantry is a good choice if you want to have your men killed as soon as possible. Having you men die under your command is the fastest way to gain prestige among your peers because the more men you needly send to die only shows how much more your own life is worth. You also need not pay your men if the entire unit gets wiped out. That is why it is best to get the infantry with the absolute worst armor possible.

Archers become more appealing when you have enough prestige that suiciding your men no longer impresses anyone. Archers have different ranges that they are capable of firing, between one and four. Some say it is best to have archers with four range, but they become more expensive the further they can shoot. Instead get archers that can only fire one. They are much cheaper. Send whatever gold you save to your family.

Mixed Infantry... more like mixed cocktail, because that is probably what your men have been drinking the night before and morning of battle considering their effectiveness. By all accounts this unit type should kick total ass being both infantry and archers, but it does not. If you were born with two different genitally you would be less confused than they are on the battlefield. Half of the time they stand there getting shot up by archers while waiting to get into range, and when they finally get into range they rush forward to get destroyed by the dedicated melee infantry units. At least they are not as bad as the mixed calvary were.

Calvary are expensive. If you get infantry at the same price they are going to be way better and more effective in combat. They may be semi-useful in certain situations but so is a seatbelt. The only real advantage they give you is that they lower your travel time, so they may be useful for older characters who gain less hours at turn change. Nothing as satisfying as working the system.

Special Forces are one of the other unit types but are generally better, and believed by some to have special hidden attribute or ability bonuses. They are a total waste of gold and are recruited by people to show others how special they are. That is why they are called “special” forces. “Special” people have them. That is why if is not unusually to see rulers running around with one hundred man units of special forces while you can hardly afford your ten man unit of mixed infantry. Remember, rulers have self-esteem issues. It's not their fault. They can't help themselves.

The last important step in naming the unit. This can be a challenge, so I will make one suggestion. Name your unit “Death to ___________”, where the blank is a noble you wish to die... or any random noble... probably best from one of the enemy realms, so you at least don't draw suspicion to yourself. This can be quick effective in the battlefield as the noble will question why you want to kill them so badly, and how they ever got your attention anyways. Remember, you must win both the battle in the field and mind to be a victorious in war. Unless you are a ruler, than you only need be victorious in the mind. Rulers go to their happy place when they are loosing in the field. There nobles always follow orders... Anyways, this also shows your higher ups that you are objective driven, and will impress upon them your ability to hold and handle the responsibilities of a higher office.
