Porl
Description
Porl is a semi-fertile rural region plagued by poor natural water sources and frequent warfare. The Porl folk are tough and resourceful due to the hardships of their existence. The region is subject to regular attacks by bands of marauding monsters and undead and the Porl folk live in fortified hilltop communities in order to defend themselves. To the north are the craggy volcanic landscapes leading to the gate of Fianik. To the west are the ash colored boggy marshlands which form an almost indiscernible coastline to the Heenic sea. To the south and east are the semi-fertile regions of Aesh, Haji and Quonnor. The rich volcanic soil of Porl is ideal for wine growing, but water is at a premium due to the absence of an alluvial river. All rainfall is captured and stored in water butts and ponds, and deep wells are dug to access ground water. Every square foot of irrigated soil is used. For example, even a small vineyard will have, in addition to grapes and beans on the trellises, cauliflower, onions and tomatoes between the trellis rows, with the vineyard margin rimmed with fruit trees, and herbs. The Porl folk make the best of what they have.
