General Region Description

The peninsula of Panamana lies between the Gulf of Madina and the Strait of Fatmilak. The area’s most notable geographic features are its two prominent mountain ranges at the northern and southern ends of the peninsula. Each mountain range is dominated by one central peak after which each range is named. Panamana is the only known source of mineral wealth on the Isle of Madina. Its provincial capital is the Town of Argentum.

Prominent Landmarks & Locations

Ichor Mountain Range-This mountain chain is situated at the northern end of Panamana around the massive peak Mount Ichor. This mountain area offers beautiful views over Dwilight's inland sea, the Gulf of Madina, and the Strait of Fatmilak. It is also the site of the local Baron’s lordly estate.

Cabal Mountain Range-This mountain grouping is located at the southern end of Panamana around Mount Cabal. The area is the location of the intricate Tiber Mines. It is also the site of Panamana’s local fortification Fort Ferrum.

Geographic Map of Panamana

Mutinous Woods-This is the fairly small eastern forest of Panamana. While it provides wood and game to Panamana's locals, the forest is too small to obtain resources from for larger public projects. These woods are well known as the hiding place of most antigovernment insurgents during Panamana's occupational periods. They’ve even been colloquially called "Freedom forest" during the occupational era.

Ithilian Forest-The Ithilian Forest is the small, dense forested area that marks Panamana’s southern border. It was named by one of the region’s first Barons, Draz Solari, after his family's homeland and former realm on Atamara, Minas Ithil.

Panamanian Foothills-These hills separate the northern and southern mountain ranges of Panamana as well as the lower western plains from the eastern forest. They are also the site of Panamana’s provincial capital the Town of Argentum. This area is devoid of everything except hills covered in an endless sea of emerald grass. It is also rumored that the original Hermit of Panamana lives in seclusion somewhere in this area.

Plains of Nod-This the very small plains region located on the western side of the Panamanian Foothills. This is where Panamana's local food supplies are grown and is rumored to be where the long lost nomadic tribe that used to live in Panamana dwelled.

Town of Argentum-This town is Panamana’s most heavily populated settlement and houses Panamana’s main governmental administration center. It sits at the base of Mt. Ichor at the edge of the Panamanian Foothills.

Tiber Mines-These quarries are the region’s main mining operation and are located at southern edge of Cabal mountain range. They supply most of Madina with mineral resources and are constantly frequented by local merchants. Their southern location allows quick transport of materials to rest of Madina. It is also the site of one of Panamana’s knight estates.

Solaris Manor-This is the lordly estate inhabited by the local Baron. The manor is built right into the side of Mt. Ichor and is the northern end point of Panamana’s Aurum Highway. The manor was named for both its first master and the precious Solaris white wine grapes cultivated on the grounds that are unique to the Mt. Ichor area.

Fort Ferrum-This fort is Panamana’s main fortification and monitors all north bond traffic into Panamana on the Aurum Highway. It is located at the northern edge of the Cabal Mountains at the narrowest point of the peninsula. It was named after the area's extensive iron ore deposits. Currently, Fort Ferrum is still under construction.

Aurum Highway-The Aurum Highway is the main roadway of Panamana. Starts at the Lugagun border and forks in the Ithilian Forest towards the Tiber Mines and Fort Ferrum. From the fort, the roadway runs in between the Plains of Nod and the Panamanian Foothills, leads through the Town Argentum, and terminates at Solaris Manor.

People

While almost entirely composed of immigrants, the inhabitants of Panamana have already gained a reputation for their hardy, independent nature. The harsh mountain life has toughened these men and women to the point that they can overcome any obstacle through their grim determination. However, their excessively independent nature has caused anti-governmental sentiment to run wild and results with clashes between Madinian police and the local populace on a daily basis. There is one native Panamanian still alive in the region. He is rumored to dwell in the Panamanian Foothills although few beyond the local Lord Draz know more about this mysterious figure.

History

Pre Madinian Colonization-Long before the first sailor of the original Madina crew set foot upon the Isle, there lived an isolated nomadic tribe on the small western plains of Panamana. Little is known about this people as they left few artifacts and their one surviving descendant has cloistered himself in the Panamanian Foothills away from civilization. Although many theories about their disappearance exist, most suspect that they were wiped out by mountain dwelling manticores that used to reside in the region.

Post Madinian Colonization-The first Madinian expedition into Panamana was led by then Lord Admiral Albert de Blanc. Initially the mission appeared successful with Madina establishing an outpost at the base of the southern mountains and many settlers moving in to help settle the region. However, that success came to an abrupt end when some poor, unsuspecting settlers made the mistake of accidentally rousing the Manticores of Panamana from their slumber. Immediately, the monsters began to viciously devour all the people in the region resulting in the local lord being thrown out and all of the newly arrived settlers abandoning the region. During this period of unrest, Panamana’s first Knight Draz Solari was appointed Baron of the region but was unable to reach the area before Panamana reverted back to its rogue status. Angry and thirsty for vengeance, Lord Draz led his dragoons south into Lugagun and fought alongside the Expeditionary Force of Madina which succeeded in slaying the monsters. With the manticores dead, his unit wiped out, and no funds to recruit new troops, Draz sent out letters beseeching Madina’s landlords for military aid and journeyed north back into Panamana to meet rumored to live in the foothills. After several days without reinforcements, Draz began to live with the native Panamanian learning much about the history of his lost people as well as the layout of every rock, stone, hidden valley, and mountain pass in the whole region. Eventually, Draz’s call for aid was answered by the Lord Purser Cinna DeSyrr. With the restoration of the Panamanian bureaucracy, Draz was once again given lordship over the land. While his initial rule proved quite profitable, his first reign was inherently doomed from the start due to the fact that the new settlers that continued to arrive in Panamana weren’t antigovernment anarchists determined to bring down his administration. The situation finally came to a head one evening when a violent mob attack Draz’s estate and forced him to fight his way out of the region. Although officially exiled, Draz has secretly taken refuge with Panamana’s native hermit hidden out in the Panamanian foothills while planning his next course of action.

These vicious beasts are well known throughout the western end of the Isle of Madina. Although believed to have all been slain during the 1st Battle of Lugagun, nobody knows for certain if more remain in the dark recesses of Panamana’s mountain caves. Lord Draz posted a bounty to encourage young adventurers to explore the complex underground tunnel system of Panamana, but so far no adventurer has dared venture into those godforsaken pits to determine what other foul horrors might lie beneath the earth.
