Discovery

Stephen lowered himself down the rope into the depths of the lair. He was tired from his fight with the monsters in the upper caves, but he knew if there was any worthy treasure to be discovered he would have to go deeper, into the very bowls of hell to find them.

Once he had reached the bottom of the tunnel he quickly began to search for the creatures that had fled his previous engagement, and his hunt brought him to a vast, open cavern.

The air of the cavern was damp and stale and despite it's darkness, at the far end Stephen could see a number of the savage beasts, gathered, and listening to a voice that spoke a harsh, guttural tongue that was clearly of nonhuman origin.

Silently the adventurer approached the animals, the speaker was still out of site but he could see that they easily numbered over a dozen and he numbered only one.

Taking shelter behind a large stalagmite, the young adventurer loaded his crossbow and prepared it for firing. The monsters were completely oblivious to his presence, there furs were matted with blood, most likely from an unfortunate adventurer, there armours were battered and dented, but he knew that they wouldn't be pushovers like those he had fought before.

Finally, taking a deep breath, the adventurer threw himself into the open and loosed the bolt towards the unsuspecting creatures. The bolt pierced the thick hide on the neck of one beasts and sent it tumbling from its perch to the cave floor. The others, panicked and shocked, looked about anxiously, and once they had spotted him they charged.

Stephen threw the crossbow at one of them and drew his sword just in time to parry an axe that was brought towards his head sending a steel ringing echoing about the cavern. It didn't take long for the commoner to dispatch the first few monsters who surprisingly were not as strong as expected.

The second wave of creatures attacked, they were much stronger than the first, and better equipped, some even wore Fellish armour they had looted from there previous battles.

He slew a couple of them before there leader barked a command which made to beasts separate. calmly he rose from his throne, he wasn't much taller than the others, but something was different about him, something Stephen would not know until there swords met.

When they did meet, the adventurer could feel the strength of the creature, it was far more powerful than a man and even more so that his beast counterparts, but he was slow, and it was easy for Stephen to out maneuver him, but when his sword met the beasts armour, it shattered and sent fragments flying across the cave.

"By the Gods!" gasped the adventurer,

The beast grabbed the man and hurled him the full length of the cave and he crashed into the stone wall. Dizzy and in pain, with blood trickling down his forehead, the adventurer stumbled to his feet, the leader was already in front of him, but before it could finish the adventurer, the man dashed up a bolder beside it and leapt at the creatures neck, plunging his dagger into its throat and there was the satisfying feeling as warm blood ran across his hand.

The other creatures panicked and fled the cave system and upon the leaders remains Stephen discovered the Mysterious Plate Mail from the North!
