Roleplay from Kaylan McDowell

After a long day’s ride, Kaylan finally found a moment and joined her men as they sat together sharing an offhand joke. “She ran like the wind,” one said to a bright eyed soldier and even though it was dark, the crimson shade was obvious on his cheeks. When they realized who was amongst them, they laughed nervously and some cleared their throats. Noticing the change in their demeanor, her eyes brightened and she turned to the one being teased.

“I’m sure Keirian the light may have affected her judgment, if she had seen the rest and known what measure,” she paused with a whisper of a grin then added, “of man you are, she would have followed you anywhere.”

A couple men howled with laughter, and the young man’s face broke into a smile as he beamed proudly. To receive a compliment from a commanding officer made any soldier’s day but to receive one from her, made it that more special even if it had absolutely nothing to do with soldiering. No matter what anyone said to him now. He would be smiling for days. Truly enough, most were smitten with the redheaded beauty they were just better at pretending.

Kaylan chose to be as close to her men as she could. She may have been young, but she’d had to grow up fast and she knew the importance of her duties and did what was necessary to see them accomplished. How could she expect them to fight for her, if she couldn’t prove she was willing to fight for them?

The attention returned to their boasting, and she visibly relaxed for the first time that day. She was exhausted, not only was her backside sore, she could really do with a bath, but she remained silent. Hardship was her constant companion, even though she was considered a noble. Luxury was a completely alien concept to her, but she hid it well.

Reaching into her pocket, she discreetly brought out a paper. The firelight cast a dim shadow over her heart shaped face, and her eyes moved as she read the few lines for the second time that day. The small dapple of freckles on her nose danced as it scrunched up and a slow smile crept onto her soft pink lips. She quickly glanced around to make sure no one saw the change in her expression. They continued with their banter and she internally sighed. Returning the letter, she continued to laugh at appropriate moments but wasn't really following. Eventually she stared up at the bright stars in the sky, her mind completely preoccupied with something else.
