Part 9: A Wonderful Sword

Xarnelf's eyebrows raised in mild surprise at the commoner's presentation of the blade, but then a hint of a smile crept onto his face. He moved forwards one step to bring himself within arm's reach of the cloaked figure, who was kneeling on one knee. Slowly, the duke took the scabbarded sword in both hands and brought the hilt up to examine the black gemstones embedded therein. As he did so, it just so happened that the hilt met the shaft of moonlight pouring in from the open window above and behind him.

Without warning, the row of gems came to vibrant, glittering life, and Xarnelf moved his head backwards by reflex. Then he recovered and began to admire the glowing, shifting stones, as he rotated the sword first one way and then back towards the other way. Finally, the duke grasped the handle and drew the blade from its scabbard, which he handed over to his weapons-master.

Some of the letters sparkled now, as the moonlight struck them. Impressed by this most curious weapon, Xarnelf tossed it over to his free left hand and then back over to his right hand. The guards behind him oohed and ahhed quietly, while Marcus verily gaped at the lively blade.

The duke proceeded to swing it several times, before spinning into a crouch to stab the blade into the nearest vulnerable bundle of hay. Marcus expected the bundle to explode from the impact, but to his chagrin, only a puff of annoyed hay burst out the back of the bundle. Xarnelf retracted the sword and stood up, while shaking a few straggling pieces of hay from the blade. He finally spoke.

"Heavier indeed, Marcus, though the balance feels right for slashing. Like other longswords, it is not meant for stabbing, yet its point does look sharp enough if the need arises. All in all, a wonderful sword, with very... unique embellishments."

Xarnelf directed his next remark to the still-kneeling commoner. "Tell me, what is your name, and from where do you hail?"
