The Green Guard

The Green Guard have defended the Octavian Family for centuries. They are armed with swords and all wear uniform greencloaks embroidered with the Octavian coat-of-arms ing gold thread. There are currently three regiments of the Green Guard, each has been tested in battle and below we have their noble stories.

The First Green Guard Regiment

Here is the story of the Green Guard regiment under the command of the heir to the Octavian Family, Antonine Andronicus Octavius I.

"Halt!" shouted Captain Valorian. The First Green Guard Regiment executed a perfect halt and stood perfectly still. "Atten-shun!" shouted Captain Valorian and felt his chest swell with pride as he witnessed his men perfrom a flawless salute to Sir Antonine. Captain Valorian turned on his heel to face Sir Antonine. "Shall I order the men to make camp my lord?" he asked.

"Of course," replied Sir Antonine "They deserve a rest, they've marched fr oday without a single complaint." Captain Valorian decided not to mention that this was because he had promised the men that morning that any man who complained would be force-fed their own liver. He turned to face his men again, "At ease, men." the men relaxed, "Make camp." The men set to it with a will. Valorian oversaw the erection of Sir Antonine's command tent. As Sir Antonine entered to inspect his tent two horsemen rode into the camp. The riders were dressed in green and brown and had the emblem of the Scouts Guild on their tunics. Without saying a word hey dismounted and walked into Sir Antonine's command tent. Valorian shook his head at them and went off to organise the sentry patrols.

One hour later Valorian was summoned to the command tent, he arrived just in time to see the two scouts leave the tent. He turned and watched as they walked over to their horses and rode off. Instead of pondering the quirks of scouts for a while, Valorian entered the tent. "Ah Valorian, take a look at these scout reports." said Sir Antonine "What do you think?" "Well my lord, it appears that the Cagilan forces are very weak in Dontow, since the capital is currently holding of the main Cagilan force I think that the best thing our force could do would be to attack Dontow." "It just so happens that the High Marshal agrees with you. We've been ordered to move to Dontow. I want you to make the arrangements, we must arrive within three days." "Consider it done my lord." "Thank you Valorian, oh and tell the men to open up a barrel of ale, they deserve it." "Thank you my lord." said Valorian with a smile on his face, at last something to cheer the men up.

It was two days later, Valorian was standing at the head of his men, to his left and right he could see the vast Carelian army, about half a mile in front of them stood the army of the Cagilan Empire. Valorian looked to his left at Sir Antonine, who had decided to fight with the men in battle. Sir Antonine nodded at Valorian before turning back to face the enemy. Suddenly the trumpets sounded across the line. Sir Antonine shouted out "To death or glory!" and drawing hi sword he began to run at the enemy. Without hesitation Valorian and the rest of the Green Guard followed him. The Green Guard were running ahead of the rest of the army and the enemy was approaching fast. "Octaviaaan!" cried Valorian, shouting the ancient battle cry of the Green Guard. His cry was echoed by his men, then the two armies collided and nothing could be heard above the din.

Valorian found himself fighting side by side with Sir Antonine. He dodged a swing by one man and stabbed him in the stomach with his long sword. The man screamed and fell to the floor. Valorian had no time for thoughts of his fallen enemy, however, he blocked a heavy blow with his shield and chopped the mans arm off. He saw Sir Antonine battling three men a few yards away. Valorian rushed over and killd one of the men with a slash across the stomach. With his foes distracted Sir Antonine killed one of the men by plunging his sword into him. Sir Antonine turned to see a man rushing at him with a spear, he stepped to one side and grabbed the man as he rushed past, stabbing him in the throat with a dagger. He shouted to Valorian "Thank you!" "You're welcome my lord."

Then they saw the banner of Carelia flying high above the melee, they both fought their way towards it. When they got there thay saw the rest of the Green Guard fighting alongside several other Carelian units. Valorian rushed alongside them as they charged a unit men-at-arms. Valorian saw a club appear out of nowhere and swing towards him. He fell to the ground and remembered no more.

He awoke lying in a pile of hay, he opened his eyes to see Private Hill looking down at him not the best sight to see when you wake up. Valorian groaned, "How long was I out for?" he asked. "About three hours sir, after that man knocked you out Sir Antonine carried you away from the battle and left you with some peasents untill the battle was over." "Did we win?" Valorian asked. A broad grin spread across Hill's face "Win, sir? We massacred the enemy, the cavalry divisions are busy chasing the remnants across the border as we speak1" "Anybody die?" Hill's face fell. "Privates Smith, the Johnson brothers, Harris, Maurie and Cooper. The lads are still out looking for their bodies." Valorian cursed, he and the rest of his unit had all grown up together in the same village, he knew Harris had had a wife and children and Smith had had a girl back in Strombran. "Who's goint to tell their families?" Valorian asked. "Sir Antonine had messengers sent to them along with a letter of reccomendation to his family. They should be able to get homes at Octavian Manor."
