The lush fields and quaint townsland of Gwohadda have long fed and supplied the nearby city of Sandalak. The rolling fields of grain supply hundreds of small bakeries and as many breweries, and the smell of their wood fires suffuses the countryside.

Being so long at war, the output of these is spartan -- small, hard loaves best suited for tight rations and long days on the march; low-alcohol beers intended to replace untrusted water without going bad, with the tons of preservative hops and spruce lending a resinous flavor and smell that sticks to the barrels.

The roads are wide and usually well-kept, with military checkpoints built into their layout, while designed to facilitate the movement of masses of troops through the countryside. Those traveling the main roads will find the fields near them planted more sparsely and with the most stunted crops, in the hopes that passing soldiers will be content with their rations. Homes are squat affairs with little decoration, the kind of dwelling that can be rebuilt quickly and designed to avoid the attention of looters and thieves. Gardens have no flowers save those on vegetables.

Gwohadda could be a happy, prosperous place with time and peace, and its people could be friendly. But long wars have bred fatigue and suspicion of foreigners; the region has become a place to travel through, rather than to. At nightfall, hooded figures prowl the streets.
