Prelude

Sir Alexi Pelevin was the Duke of Krimml, the capital of the realm of Fontan. Chancellor Rogal Dorn Primarchs exiled Duke Pelevin after the banning of Hamilton Vita and several protests against Chancellor Rogal Dorn Primarchs and Judge Katsuyori by various nobles including Alexi and Hamilton. Some claim he (Chancellor Rogal Dorn or Duke Alexi) was insane, others respect him for his valor in the face of adversity, while yet others insist this was a move to gain more power.

The Change of Allegiance

Following his exile, Duke Pelevin finally snapped. On the Duke's order, all buildings in the city of Krimml were destroyed. This includes all recruiting centers, the academy, houses of healing, etc. If this were the extent of the Duke's madness, the blow to Fontan would have been bad enough. However, the Duke's madness was still deeper. Soon after the destruction of the city's infrastructure was complete, Hamilton Vita suggested the Duke of Krimml pledge allegiance to the realm of Perdan and Duke Alexi followed suit. The entire duchy of Krimml and all of it's knights and nobles, immediately become sworn to the service of the King of Perdan. The regions that were subjected to the switch of loyalty included: Morshes, Evora, Braga, Dulbin, Hagley, Commonyr, and Greatbridge, as well as the ducal seat of Krimml. Eighty nine nobles and knights sworn to the service of these regions suddenly found themselves as subjects of the King of Perdan as well.

Following the switch of allegiance, Duke Pelevin sent the following message to King Sangue Raiva of Perdan:

Letter from Alexi Pelevin
Message sent to Sangue Raiva
Good King Sangue, I hope you will understand that while the new realm will harbor no ill will towards Perdan, the Duchy of Krimml will soon become the Democratic Republic of Fontan. It is only due to a matter of beurocratic (sic) negligence that the Duchy could not secede from Fontan directly. I hope that in the future, our two realms will be on good terms. As this is the case, I ask no protection from the armies of Perdan. I hope you will understand the situation the high criminal Rogal Dorn has put me and the people of my Duchy in.
Alexi Pelevin (Duke of Krimml)

Soon after this proclamation, nobles of Fontan began a colony takeover attempt in the city of Krimml. At this point, it is not known if the colony takeover attempt was part of Duke Pelevin's plan, or if this was part of yet another power play by some noble of Fontan. A new colony in Krimml would have ousted Duke Pelevin from power and established a new realm in the city. The only way for Duke Pelevin to form a new realm and still maintain his possession of the Duchy of Krimml would have been to secede from Perdan, which he could not do from Fontan. Most likely the colony takeover attempt was yet another facet of Duke Pelevin's madness.

In any case, the colony takeover failed nearly immediately at sunrise of the next day.

The Reactions

The dawning of the new day over the East Island revealed the inevitable morass of confusion. The common troops of both realms were confused with the sudden change of allegiance of their former comrades. Battles between Fontan troops and former-Fontan-now-Perdan troops occurred in no less than 10 regions, involving many thousand CS of troops. The colony takeover of Krimml was doomed to an abrupt failure. Fontan quickly switched the location of their capital to the city of Oligarch.

Almost immediately following the change of allegiance, the regions of the Duchy of Krimml started changing allegiance back to the Fontan. Nobles as well, began swearing oaths to any available Fontanese Lord. Within 24 hours of the switch, all regions of the Duchy of Krimml had returned to Fontan, with the exception of the city of Krimml itself.

Following Duke Pelevin's message to King Sangue of Perdan, it was obvious that the Duke had no thoughts or feelings of allegiance to Perdan. Knowing that the Duke would abandon Perdan as soon as possible, King Sangue ordered the banishment of Duke Pelevin. Arch Priestess Evangeline Uceek responded by immediately banning Duke Pelevi with the following statement: "Openly stating that you have no loyalty or concern for Perdan and that joining us was just a means for your own ambitions. You don't belong here."

Minutes later, Duke Pelevin was found dead, apparently by suicide, in his private chambers in Krimml. It is rumored he sent off one last message to a comrade though.

The Aftermath

The Krimml incident came to an end the next day when Amelia Bernstein, a noble of Fontan, stepped forward in Krimml and presented documentation proving her rightful claim to the Duchy of Krimml. Despite the evidence of corruption amongst the local officials, the proclamation of a Fontanese noble as the Duchess of Krimml caused the region to immediately be realigned as a region of Fontan, owing allegiance to the Fontanese Chancellor. Many militia units in the city remained loyal to Perdan, however, and conducted guerrilla warfare against Fontanese troops. For the next nine days the Perdanese militia attacked any troops loyal to Fontan that entered the city, denying Fontan access to the city, prior to finally being overcome by Fontanese troops.

While all the nobles and regions were relatively quickly returned to Fontan, the after effects of this incident will be long felt. All nobles of Fontan that were caught in the switching of allegiance forfeited all of their bonds. Between the secession of the city of Fontan and the incident in Krimml, Fontan lost nearly 35,000 CS of military strength. During the confusion, Caligus took control of the stronghold of Akesh Temple, Perdan took control of the city of Westmoor, and Sirion regained control of their former region of Tabost. All of the estates in all regions that switched allegiance were lost, and regions themselves suffered severe economic damage.
