Budding Religious Conflict or Rogue Priest?

Recently Andrew Cunningham of the Flow of the Balance used the Flow's believers to take advantage of the loss of Akesh Temple's duke. At first, I thought this was only the most evident result from rumors of a budding religious war. However, more investigation has suggested he is a rogue priest. Let us first begin with the rumors of a religious war.

Flow of the Balance vs Church of Humanity

"It is my understanding that this Church of Humanity is a creation of the Perdan dogs we fight. I wouldn't be surprised if the recent attacks were in reprisal for the assassination attempt against their priestess recently. Is there not a way to make the preaching of this insidius religion a crime and therefore be able to arrest and deport them or something?" - Katalynfae Dragul, Countess of Dulbin

Here the Flow tacitly admitted to support of the assassination while at the same time ignoring the consequences of such support. Unfortunately no one has been willing to talk to me on a timely basis from either the Church of Humanity or the Flow of the Balance and that is all the information I have.

Duke Andrew Cunningham's explanations

"I will come out and say that on no account was I ever instructed, or even authorized by anybody in the Flow of Balance to act as I did. My actions are borne of my own will, and the will of the portents.

Whilst those of my faith may be unwilling to recognize the threat that the current war poses to the continued survival of our faith, my experiences whilst travelling through the newly rewritten borderlands between our peoples suggests that there will be nothing of the Flow of Balance left if this war is not turned around.

I respect that under other circumstances our faiths might have otherwise coexisted peacefully, and neither of our faiths are ordinarily politically based, however, I cannot with good conscience watch the annihilation of my faith and take no action.

If anything, my actions were triggered by the attack of Flow of Balance followers by Church of Humanity followers in Greatbridge. Walking through the contested lands in the west of Fontan, I realized just how quickly our followers were being annihilated.

The people of Caligus, whom follow your faith, have set about on a path to completely and utterly annihilate Fontan, and remove all mention of her name from history. I find it hard to believe that a world without Fontan would tolerate the Flow of Balance.

This is why I must act. I do not wish for the destruction of Caligus, nor for the removal of believers in Sanctus Acies. I wish for peace. But until this war of annihilation is finished, I will take what actions I can to forstall the eventual doom of my faith." - Duke Andrew Cunningham

Here it appears that priest, now duke, Andrew Cunningham appears to act on his own actions. The problem here though is that the priest took action against Caligus for religious reasons not even related to a religion Caligus supports. Furthermore, he attacked Caligus as desiring to annihilate Fontan with no proof. Irregardless, Caligus has supported the true Fontan, the Confederacy, and seeks to ensure that Fontan maintains its ideals. Duke Andrew Cunningham finally speaks of peace, yet his actions only provoke Caligus and Sanctus Acies into further violence. Furthermore, he hid from my request to see more of his perspective on the issue suggesting guilt on his part.

Revelation's Perspective

I then spoke with Revelation:

"I shall answer your second part first :) the loss of Akesh Temple. Duke Andrew acted alone, for I believe my counter parts in the Flow of the Balance when they said it was not sanctioned by the Church. I believe Duke Andrew was fueled with frustration when the Church of Humanity had allegedly cause trouble in Greatbridge with unrest amongst the populace. Seeing that the Duke of Akesh had been imprisoned and the low region control of Akesh he took matters into his own hands.

That being said the answer to the first question will be a mixture and hope you can understand what I am saying. There is no Psuedo-religious war with CoH, SA against the Flow. At the beginning of the war I talked to the Flow of the Balance and we have a verbal agreement that the churches of the Flow and Sanctus Acies would not be used as a tool of war, what happens further North is between CoH and the Flow. The agreement was free preaching in any region except Visue, and if the Local Lord requested a priest to stop preaching they were to do so. Sanctus Acies has not left the borders of Caligus, except to make contact with the Flow and your self Sir Hamilton. We have heard rumors that Sanctus Acies are out to destroy the Flow this is not the case, ask the Local Lords have we preached in their regions for we have not ans I said the Priests have stayed inside the Caligus borders.

After the Flow claim the Akesh Temple I went to Visue and wrote to the Elders of the Flow asking if the Akesh seizure was Sanctioned and it was not. At this current time our verbal agreement still stands.

One more thing I was part of the Caligus Council, I asked to be withdrawn from that station, I want to show we are not a state religion but a continental religion. Every member of the church are equals no matter where they come from, each has their say on all matters, the whole of the Church is the council not just a few. Our religion is closer to the Flow than most would think, were it ends we begin, our core values are the same, but we different enough for each to be different in many ways." - Priest Revelation Con Doin

When questioned about why Viseu was exempted, Revelation claimed ignorance but offered the suggestion that perhaps it is holy to the Flow since the Flow was founded there.

As you can see, Duke Andrew's actions seem to be taken without consent of superiors. Furthermore, this has not resulted in hostilities between the Flow and Sanctus Acies which we can theorize the illegitimate duke was attempting to create. Now if I only knew what was occurring between CoH and FotB in the western Fontanese regions.

Sabotage of Paper!

Only a few minutes ago a servant wearing Neptune Arthur Slasher coat-of-arms was caught changing the print type of the newspaper to make his owner look good. Unfortunately, he got away with a few copies of the paper before he could be apprehended.

This both proves Neptune Arthur Slasher's low character in sabotaging the newspaper of another realm and his continued aggression against free speech. That is, continued aggression against free speech even after having me banned. Apparently he feels he must sabotage our newspaper. Surely one who had nothing to hide would have no reason to take this course of action?

Update: A recent investigation has resulted in the discovery that one of my servants has betrayed me for his Fontanese relatives. He had long been a member of my retinue, but had harbored loyalties to Fontan. He is now residing in Fontan assumingly as part of Neptune Arthur Slasher's retinue. It appears he was responsible for the sabotage

OOC: It appears the sabotage was an accident by Neptune's player and was unintentional

Fontan's Vile and Unwarranted Violence

Fontan proclaims free speech for its nobles, yet its nobles oddly deny it for others. How can this be? Perhaps enemies are considered unnoble to Fontan? Which would make sense considering their past record of electing nobles to regions instead of fulfilling rightful claims and their constant aggression to other realms. And they've wanted to have dukes face re-election. What anarchy is this? With this precedent a duke's land rights mean nothing. This will cause regular lords to no longer value a duke's position. After that, a lord's land rights may be violated through election. The next step is peasants voting for a lord and voting one of their own kind in office. The horrors of the anarchy they preach!

Not only does Fontan deny free speech, they do it in a violent, irrational manner. Fontan banned me from their realm. I did not choose to leave. I merely spoke my mind. And yet they have the gall to call me a traitor and call for my execution? They have violated the very thing they purport to hold sacred!

Anyway, behold the messages themselves:

You may have escaped this time Hamilton, but I will enjoy the day I catch you and finally silence your incessant prattling by removing your vile tongue.

Malfurion Stormrage Count of Commonyr, Marshal of the Fontan Rangers

Indeed this Hamilton wags his mouth too much. He should be lifting his sword instead.

Theros Landre (Knight of Al Amarah)

You have no sense of loyalty at all and to me everyone in CoF is a treacherous dog.

Neptune Arthur Slasher (Knight of Oligarch)

Hamilton, I do not order you. I am just asking you nicely to hang yourself to save our executors a lot of trouble. Besides it would be a waste of a good piece of rope.

Neptune Arthur Slasher (Knight of Oligarch)

Neptune Arthur Slasher's logic is a bit lacking in that last letter. How will hanging myself, as he wishes, be a waste of a good piece of rope? He must either petition my hanging or the saving of good rope, not both. But irregardless of his bad logic, I would agree that my hanging would be a waste of a good piece of rope because my execution is unnecessary.

And if I were to be executed, I am a nobleman and a hanging is a commoner's death! I deserve a beheading by sword should a court find my execution necessary. But considering the state of Fontan's judicial system, I doubt there can be a fair trial in their lands.

Vindicator of the Confederates

Today is the beginning of the Confederate Vindicator. I have established this paper to protect our reputation from the lies of those who claim to govern the Fontanese. I am the first of my family to take up newspaper writing since those of Aurum Bishamon, Sephirah Bishamon, and Zeluioj Bishamon. I only hope that I am as successful as they were.
