Bloodmoon refers to a small number of plant species native to Dwilight, primarily known for their toxic or hallucinogenic effects.

Bloodmoon Palm

Bloodmoon was first encountered by colonists on the island of Raviel, where the original inhabitants living in the fringes were known to eat a fruit that came from a certain palm, wrapped in a leaf and combined with a lime paste when eaten the fruit or nut of the tree would create either a mild hallucinogenic state or complete temporary madness. When eaten in large amounts the future and past could both be seen but as if through a distorted mirror. The fruit was known as the Bloodmoon fruit as when ripe upon the palm it was red in color and the size of a plum. When chewed it would stain the lips. It was usually eaten on a full moon before an important event or festival.

King Apasurain was the first to introduce the Bloodmoon to the eastern continent when he formed the kingdom of Thulsoma. It later served to inspire the Cult of Bloodmoon, who viewed in its effects mystical enlightenment. Not limited to simply introducing the fruit, culture of the palm was also extended to the North where it was not growing originally, and it is said that the conditions there might have even made the fruit's effects more potent.

Usage of the fruit was controversial, however. Back on its native islands, the government of D'Hara decided to heavily regulate the fruit, imposing heavy taxes at first, and then restricting purchase and commanding the breeding of non-hallucinatory varieties, following the Bloodmoon Crisis where an intoxicated foreign priest had to be executed out of pity. It then became completely illegal to consume the fruit raw, though there remained royal orchards of bloodmoon palm for the production of highly sought-after bloodmoon wine, a non-psychotic beverage resulting in the neutralization of the toxins by special strains of yeast.

Meadow Bloodmoon

Less known and very rare, Meadow Bloodmoon is a semi-lignified annual species native to North-Western Dwilight, generally found between Gretchew and Ygg d'Razhuul. It is extremely thorny with abrasive deeply lobed leaves, but is reputed to grow incredibly fast one germination occurs, has a very short flowering period of just a few days at most, and then produces a large fruit that is superficially similar to the Palm Bloodmoon's, but is extremely deadly, and which sends its achenes flying in the winds when ripe. The fruit and seeds are never consumed, but the flowers, as well as honey harvested from them, are said to bolster strength and courage. The seeds only germinate in regions where a lot of blood has been spilled.
