The Black Tower is an esoteric society whos membership has a shared set of goals and ideals. The Tower specifically refers to an elite set of enlightened individuals who cooperate to achieve their goals, and are uniquely empowered by their enlightenment, education and intelligence. Members of the Tower are specifically forbidden from placing value on class, and as such high members of the Tower have from time to time been known to be commoners. Members of the Tower have achieved a higher mystical understanding of the universe, and deem their own ranks as the only viable leaders of men.

The organization itself actually can be viewed in two parts - the original Black tower, and the reborn tower founded by the brothers Fisc Arylon and Taran Arylon. The reconstituded tower was founded in the Dakan region in the realm of Toren with the stated goal of finding and training the most elite warriors, traders, bureaucrats and priests in the world, for the purpose controlling world affairs and establishing a new order. To that end, the Tower has an extensive screening and apprenticeship program to ensure that only the right people are chosen, and those people are so highly trained that there can not be effectively challenged.
