Aniri does police work

Aniri had been doing police work in the region of Ambermel for a few weeks. It wasn’t one of her favorite activities, but she knew it helped her realm, so she did it without complaining. Not long after the sun set, she gathered her men yet again for the day and started patrolling the streets in search of suspicious peasants.

In the last few days Aniri didn’t find many such peasants, the city was rather quiet. She did however start to learn the habits of the people living in the city… At eight o’clock Brad would lock his bakery and head home. Fleur, the florist, would water the plants one more time and head home too. At least that’s what the other people thought. Aniri knew they would first meet each other under the great oak, by the smithy. But what they didn’t know was that Brad’s wife and Fleur’s husband were also meeting in secret… But that was none of Aniri’s business. Randy wound stumble out of the local pub with two of his friends whose names Aniri didn’t know…neither did Randy, judging by the state he was in… Jack would prepare his violin then head to Jolene’s house and play a love song under her balcony and she would come out and tell him off… every single day.

Just as Aniri was thinking that it was very unlikely she’ll find any suspicious peasants that day, she saw him. A weird looking peasant, on the roof of the house on the left of the street, who rapidly leaped off the house, flew over her head and her men and landed on the house on Aniri’s right. When Aniri got over the initial shock of such a sight she noticed what the peasant was holding in his hands: a striped piglet. Before she could notice anything else, the peasant was jumping on another house, then another…. and he vanished out of sight.

“Now that’s what I call a suspicious peasant!” exclaimed Aniri! “Follow him! You ten, on the roof! The rest, on the ground! Tankred, take the ground, I’ll go on the roof!” she ordered her men and their captain.

All men quickly followed the orders and Aniri herself somersaulted on the roof. They started running towards where the peasant had vanished out of sight, both on the ground and on the rooftops. They kept their quick pace for what seemed like whole minutes.

Seven rooftops from where they have started, right in the chase, Aniri took a wrong step and lost her balance. One of her men extended a hand but it was out of her grasp, she was getting dangerously close to the edge of the roof. Just then, with the corner of her eye, Aniri noticed Tankred was readying to catch her and heard him yell:

“Don’t worry m’lady, I won’t let you fall!”

Aniri fell to the ground with a thud and opened her eyes. She was staring at some wooden floorboards and her right side was starting to ache considerably. She was in a crouching position and she could see a chair right near her. It took her a few moments to realize she had fallen asleep while completing paper work at her desk.

“All this police work has started to wreck my nerves” she thought. “I need some excitement. What if I go to the tournament, that would work quite well for me…”

Her trail of thoughts stopped as Tankred knocked at the door and entered quickly after her muffled “Yes?”.

“Are you alright m’lady?” he said looking puzzled at his leader lying on the floor. “It is time for patrolling the streets again. The men are ready and waiting.”

“I’m quite fine, I will be out in ten minutes. I must have fallen asleep while writing. Can you make sure that this doesn’t happen to me again?”

Tankred bowed briskly and headed towards the door and answered:

“Don’t worry m’lady, I won’t let you fall..” and the door closed before she could hear him say “asleep again”. She stood dumbstruck watching the door.
