Dominated by farmlands, Rustton can give strangers the impression that it is more densely populated by scarecrows than by humans. In reality, the land is moderately populated by people, but most of its settlements are small and widely scattered throughout the whole region, meaning that only those with local knowledge know them all. Many of these settlements are tiny villages, with each village being home to a few families that have tended the surrounding fields for generations.

Rustton's south-western border ends at the mighty river that cuts through that edge of Atamara. This regional border is a mix of flood plains and steep cliffs. Atop the highest cliff is the large village of Winteredge, which is the main trading centre of the region. Local folklore says that a particularly harsh winter saw the river freeze over, allowing peasants from Stoneville to walk across the frozen waters to a new life in Rustton - founding the village of Winteredge.

Inland, the cliffs give way to the Vale of Calder. A deep valley, with the larger village of Calder at its centre and smaller villages scattered along the sides of the valley, the Vale has been plagued by tales of witchcraft. This means that the other inhabitants of Rustton often treat Calderans with suspicion, leading to Calder becoming a village that shuns visitors. Strangers passing that way are often greeted by the sounds of doors being bolted and window shutters being slammed.

The final large settlement is Rosemont, in the east. As the name might suggest, Rosemont is widely considered to be the most pleasant village in Rustton. Visitors will be given a warm welcome and invited to sample the meads that are brewed in the village and served at the rival taverns - the Red Dragon Inn at the north end of the main street, and the Rose and Crown Tavern at the south.
