A Response to King Garthon

The latest copy of the Carelian Times was recently delivered to our offices. For several days, the parchment was used simply to see if our quills were still sharp. Eventually however, we succumbed to curiosity and decided to see if there was anything worth reading in our rivals journal. There wasn't, as it turned out. But we decided to get in touch with Malice Osha, former King of Ash Sea Islands, to hear his response to some of the claptrap published in the Carelian propaganda rag.

"Alas, it seems that time has dimmed the memory of our Carelian brethren. In the case of their monarch though, honest recollection seems beyond the fellow. I shall endeavour to put the record straight.

The Ash Sea Islands never sought the destruction of Abington. The last war between us saw the handover of the Islands and the blossoming of a grand friendship. It is strange that King Garthon should bring it up however, considering that they declared hatred against Abington and sought to destroy her and RedSpan themselves.

The first war I recall Carelia fighting with the Cagilan Empire came shortly after an honour war our two kingdoms had. A war that we called off when the Cagilan Empire interfered so that they could secure Nida.

In the next war between Carelia and the Cagilan Empire, the Ash Sea Islands mediated. Without that mediation, Carelia's land loss may well have been permanent. Likewise, later on we sided with Carelia when Prime Minister Vengence tried to extend the time he held Carelian lands. I was ready to march to war to ensure no skulduggery. How on earth a lack of bloodshed diminishes the achievement of resolving the situation peacefully though, I simply don't know.

Of course, the saddest part of all this is the fact that the biggest military intervention Carelia ever made regarding the Ash Sea Islands was to help sack Ash'rily all those years ago. For all the same reasons as Carelia we could have abandoned this alliance, but our kingdoms shared bonds of honour and integrity. It would have ensured Ashlantean aid if ever Carelia had truly been in need. Sadly however, Carelia no longer seems to value honour and integrity as highly any longer. They can say what they like about Sir Kronos, but at least under his rule they had that to be proud of."

The Chronicle would like to thank our illustrious former monarch for imparting his views on King Garthon and his words. We are of course, glad to set the record straight and refute the blazon words of the Carelian monarch. -Wolfram

Pyrrhic Victory

Ashlantean forces handed a pyrrhic victory to Suville this evening, after they came to liberate Rustton from Suvillian occupation. The Serpænt Templar Knights arrived in Rustton exhausted after a hard days ride from Wynford, however they eagerly set up battle lines against a numerically superior and better rested foe. The ensuing battle lasted three hours, and saw the near entirety of the Suvillian forces routed from the field.

In the end only Queen Callisto of Suville remained on the field with a meagre handful of Rangers, facing the Ashlantean Host. The Serpænt Templar Knights acted with mercy and honour however, refusing to cut Queen Callisto down and instead withdrawing from the field. Having crushed a numerically superior force, humbled the Queen of Suville and captured four Suvillian nobles, the Serpant Templar Knights can have a deserved celebration this night. -Wolfram

Update:- We are obliged to inform our readers that the Guardians of Magna Serpænsism were also present in the crushing of the Suvillian expeditionary force. -Wolfram

Trends Abound

The Ash Sea Islands has begun to set its own trends, whipping the armies of Carelia and Caergoth twice in as many days. It would seem that our enemies forgot something quite major when planning our dismemberment: that this kingdom has deliciously sharp fangs. One wonders just how much flesh our enemies are willing to lose in this dangerous game they play. -Wolfram

March 11, 2008

Part of a Trend?

The Cagilan Empire has now been defeated a second time by Falasan, this time in Nazia. Although the Cagilans have been quite capable of fighting wars against incredibly far away, and often weaker opponents in the past, Falasan seems to present them with an intractable problem. Not only is Falasan an equal, but she is also a neighbour. Perhaps the Cagilan Empire will soon regret the day that it decided to push a realm that has already made so many sacrifices to maintain peace - out of kindness to the Cagilan armies it turns out, rather than fear of them. -Wolfram

Early Setback for the Cagilan Empire

Just days after declaring war on Falasan, the Cagilan Empire has suffered its first military defeat in the first great conflict of the war. Crossing the treacherous mountain passes into Galadia, the Cagilan armies met stiff resistance from Falasan and were ultimately repulsed in their assault on the Falasani stronghold there.

In related news, the new Cagilan Prime Minister has been in touch with the Ash Sea Islands assuring his majesty, King Doc's Revenge that the Cagilan's are not our enemy. This falsehood was met with sneering derision by several illustrious Ashlantean nobles, questioning just how much of a friend would seek to distract one of our strongest allies at so critical a time. -Wolfram

Outlook stormy for Norland

With rumours of Minas Ithil successfully storming the walls of Barad Riel this morning, Ashlanteans begin to wonder whether victory is now in sight for its northern ally. In the early months of the long conflict between Norland and Minas Ithil, it was Norland making the gains, aided in no small part by Abington's brief entry into the war. Their retribution against Minas Ithil merciless for the part they had played in the brief foundation of Kybcyell.

Since that dark period, the Ithillian campaign has surged from strength to strength, with Norland struggling to even defend her borders, let alone launch a new offensive to once again turn the war in their favour. Minas Ithil has now regained two of the regions it lost to diplomatic skulduggery before their war even began. Should Minas Ithil see its banners raised above the walls of Barad Riel, the surrender of Norland surely can't be long in coming. -Wolfram

The Expected, Unexpected

In a predictable move, the Cagilan Empire declared war against Falasan, one of the Ash Sea Islands closest allies this morning. A move that, although expected since the beginning of the war, still managed to surprise some Ashlanteans.

It appears that our enemies don't feel quite confident enough even with the armies of seven realms attempting to lay the Ash Sea Islands low. Now an eighth realm must join the fray in an effort to cut away any support the Ash Sea Islands might muster.

The arrogant bluster of our aggressors at the beginning of this war begins to look more and more like frantic fear as this war progresses. -Wolfram

Aja Falls

After two weeks of occupation by Darkan, Taleriumese and Taran forces, Aja finally succumbed to the heavy handed efforts of her occupiers this morning. The local leaders were finally found and slaughtered by their supposed 'liberators,' who have spent the last weeks looting, demolishing the walls of Aja and butchering peaceful Ajan locals each time they gathered to protest against their oppressors.

We have heard that the story goes out in Tara of some sort of liberation at their hands, but the courageous actions of the Ajan people speak otherwise. Not only did they hold out for weeks, but they even shrugged off initial efforts to assimilate them back into the Taran fold. The Ajan people clearly well remember the brutality with which Tara first took Aja from Southasland and then the callous indifference they showed to Aja's plight as they forsook their own capital to try and keep Sullenport in their hands.

The day Aja is truly liberated will be the day Ashlantean soldiers sweep back into Aja and flush away the Taran rot that now plagues it once again. -Wolfram

Far from quiet on the Western Front

Even as the fighting has lulled upon our southern borders in recent days, skirmishes and attacks upon our western provinces have only seemed to have increased as the new moon rises. Much of the fighting seems to be centred on the ducal seat of Aja and neighbouring territories, with a Falasan expeditionary force sadly unable to prevent the strongholds overrun by coalition forces from Darka, Talerium and Tara just last week.

The Taran armies have been attempting to forcibly bring Aja under their command, though thus far have been thwarted by an impressive guerilla campaign by the Ashlantean citizenry in the region. Since their first failed attempt at takeover, rumours have reached the Chronicle that the Taran forces present have begun dismantling the fortifications of Aja. Presumably this is in an effort to build a second fort within the stronghold to defend themselves from the militant citizenry!

Fight on Aja, fight on. -Wolfram
