Taraicon.png Aja

Aja is a somewhat sparcely populated region at the western edge of the mountains on Caergoth's northern borders. To its north, west and south lay the great plains of Jagla, Chato, Picnu and Tichi, their tough scrublands clawing up into the foothills. To the east is the mountainous region of Inxi with its reknowned hot springs, and the Ajan Duke's private retreat.

There are few settlements in the region and most of the population is centered in and around the great fortress-city of Aja, which dominates the western-most mountian in the chain. Centuries old, many banners have flown over its towers and its tan and ruddy-brown stone edifaces are marbled through with veins of deep reddish-brown, said by some to be the spilt blood of countless great heroes who have defended its walls, and silver, said to be their honor.

In times of peace there can be found refuge for travelers and often caravans will pass through, creating an ever-changing marketplace for exotic and not so exotic goods. Pottery from the neighboring region of Chato can be found in abundance. Settlements on the eastern borders of the region are known for craftworks of silver and marble, both harvested from the roots of the mountains. Mines in the south once produced semi-precious stones but those are a rare find in the area now and most of those mines have become stone quarries or are abandoned.

There is some agriculture, croplands on the western borders below the fortress-city produce grain and vegetables. Small orchards dot the southern flank of the mountain, and family vineyards can be found to the east. Goats and sheep are kept in small flocks throughout the region.

Wild game is abundant even in the difficult terrain, hardy mouintain deer and wild goats thrive, and rabbits, fox, and small game are plentiful. The plains and foothills below are home to a flock of ostrich, who escaped captivity in the region recently. They sometimes venture into the higher parts of the mountian near the fortress, although no one seems to know why.

The weather in the region is generally dry and excepting a few weeks a year of steady rains, the climate would best be described as dry to arid. Flash floods are a danger during the rains.

Taraicon.png History

Aja was once the capital of Tara, but towards the end of the Great Taran War it was eventually handed over by Achilles in defeat. It was later won over and was the capital of Tara until the sinking of Atamara.

Since then Aja has seen a relatively peaceful existence except for the few instances of looting and attempted Colonisations by Talerium and Carelia at the time of the War for the Islands.
