Despite the leather she wore over her clothing and the dagger sheathed at her belt, Catharina still looked very much like a scribe. The glasses she wore gave her the appearance of someone who used their head more than their hands, and neither did her body have the look of someone who regularly battled monsters. That was one reason she had chosen to use the steps of the temple as a place to sort through her things, rather a dirty, noisy tavern - drunk men tended to mistake her for a tavern wench.

The other reason was it seemed to be the only clean place in all of Haffemet, aside from a few bird droppings here and there.

Papers spilled out from her satchel, decorating the area around her. Most of them were notes she'd taken from a peasant worker back home, detailing plans for some basic traps. She had been using them on particularly stupid varieties of undead and monsters, rather than the animals the traps were intended for. There was also a book on monster lore, which was far less useful than she'd thought it would be.

"Where is that paper...? She asked to no one in particular as she frantically searched through her things, hoping a strong wind wouldn't come and blow all her work away.

Nikkitanilas had had a busy day. When she wasn't holding court, she was in the streets preaching. The region was definitely showing improvements however, all the hard work was paying off. Nikki hoped her region would be at its best in most areas by the end of the week. Production unfortunately would take a little longer to restore.

Nikki made her way back to the temple. Her white robes flowed as she walked, and her free flowing curly blond hair added to her elegance.

Arriving at the temple, she noticed the young adventurer sitting on the steps.

"Surely it would be more comfortable to conduct your studies inside the temple child?" Nikki greeted with a warm smile. "It is rather cold out here, and getting dark too."

Catharina looked up at the sound of a woman's voice.

"Surely it would be more comfortable to conduct your studies inside the temple child" Nikki greeted with a warm smile. "It is rather cold out here, and getting dark too"

She hadn't recognized the woman as the Baroness of Haffemet, though she had correctly guessed that she was a priestess. While it was true that it was getting dark, and she was afraid of her papers getting snatched up by mischievous street urchins, something made her hesitant to go inside the temple.

Catharina glanced at the sky and the setting sun, uncertain. Would it be rude to refuse?

While she thought of this, a breeze sent several of her papers flying in the air, turning the front steps of temple into a whirlwind of paper and parchment.

"Augh! Come back here you...!"

Immediately, she stopped all thought and sprang into action, snatching papers from the air and chasing them down before they could escape.

When she finally returned to the temple's steps, her hair was a little disheveled and her glasses were slightly crooked. The adventurer sighed and quickly placed her papers (and the book) inside her satchel before another gust of wind could blow them out of her hands.

"I suppose that might be a good idea." She answered, straightening her glasses and pulling a lock of hair behind her ear.

Nikki smiled again. "My name is Nikkitanilas Felhand, Baroness of this region and High Priestess of Estahsism" she said, offering a hand "Might I know your name?"

Catharina's eyebrows shot up. Why in the world was a baroness paying any attention to her? Was it because she was a priestess and she happened to be sitting on the temple steps?

"It's Catharina, your ladyship." The adventurer answered, taking the proffered hand. As nice as the woman seemed, she didn't want to get executed for 'pretending' to be related to a noble family, so left off her last name.

"Nice to meet you Catharina."

Nikkitanilas lead the adventurer through the temple into a study she had set up in one of the back-rooms.

The shelves mostly consisted of books to do with religion and theories about the Gods, a few Nikki had written herself. Dominating a large central desk was a copy of the Spiritual Guide to Estahs, in remarkably good condition.

"So what is it you are studying, child?"

Catharina didn't answer right away. She was far too busy looking at all the books in the room - the only time she could recall seeing this many was when she was still working as a scribe. Back then, an irritable old man guarded the study and kept most of the servants from touching the books.

"Studying?" She blinked. "Oh, you mean the papers? Those are just plans for trapping monsters and undead, and some notes on finding them. Not anything you'd want to read, I'm sure." There was also the thoroughly useless book on monster lore she'd stolen, but she couldn't imagine the priestess would be interested in that, either.

"A curious adventurer you are" Nikkitanilas stood behind Catharina as she looked at the books "Are you a religious person Catharina?"

Catharina feared where this was leading to. She frowned momentarily, then her face took on a more neutral expression.

"No, not particularly." She did believe in the gods, of course, she just didn't think they cared a whit about her - so she cared not at all about them.

Nikkitanilas took a seat, picking up a stack of paper from the desk which she had been writing recently.

"It is perhaps something worth looking into then. Too many live without faith in these lands now"

"It's a bit hard to think about when an undead is about to gnaw your head off."

Nikkitanilas looked sternly at the adventurer.

"I do not appreciate your tone child. Faith can give you the guidance you seek, but only if you will accept it. Physical strength and intellect are not the only aids in battle. I will leave you alone to your studies."

Nikki got up from her seat, and strode out of the room to head back to her estate for the evening

She bowed her head at the priestess' stern gaze. "Sorry, my lady." It seemed working for an alcoholic noblewomen had made her forget most of her manners. Her former employer had never cared how she addressed her, and she was often too drunk to notice a lack of formality.

Catharina supposed she was lucky she wasn't immediately kicked out of the temple and beaten.
