Overview
Unique items are legendary and/or mysterious items of history and power. They bring prestige to whoever manages to secure them for himself, because they are so rare and whoever owns one must be powerful.
Lastly, unique items are not the same thing as the common items that adventurers can collect (see New Item Ideas). Many people think they are, but they aren't. Common items are common items and unique items are unique items.
Condition
These items have a condition - they deteriorate. Only adventurers can repair them by taking them to a sage.
Why are Unique Items Valuable ?
Because they are unique. And we don't mean that the way "rare" in most MMORPGs means "about half a million top-players have it", but in that each and every item exists exactly once(*). So if you want to be the owner of the Big Book of Bugfixing, then the only way to get it is to find the current owner and make him part with it. There is absolutely no way to find a second one. See, "unique" means exactly what the dictionary definition makes you think it means.
