On Dragons

Noting the arrival of a priest in the city, curious peasants gathered around Melehan and his retinue. They had never heard of the Way of the Dragon before,  and the novelty of his foreign mannerisms attracted them towards him.

Before long, Melehan had begun delivering his first sermon in the south, speaking of the Way and the importance of adhering to the seven prime virtues. He spoke of Shinya, and his ascension to the celestial temple. He spoke of dedication and honor, and he spoke of the glorious quests the dragon warriors had undertaken as a test of their worthiness. Thus he spoke for hours to an audience that seemed only to grow, as word of the sermon spread.

As Melehan began answereing questions from the assembled crowd, a small, but eager boy piped up-

- Why do you call your path the Way of the Dragon?

Melehan chuckled. He'd been asked questions before in the past, yet never one like this. He pointed towards the north.

You see there where I point, boy? Far away to the north, in Sasrhas, we did sight a dragon some months ago, the day I did found the Way.  Before this, there were always rumors that they had made their home on the Dark Isle, yet those rumors were never substantiated.

As I did mention earlier, the gods live on a higher plane, which we know only as the celestial temple, where they hunt,  feast and engage in honorable combat. Yet, they may visit our lands when they deem it fit. When they do so, they come to us in the form of mighty dragons. There are a vast number of them, chief amongst whom is the Lawgiver... They embody the seven prime virtues of the Way. Thus we honor them in following the path, and in our dedication to the seven primes, earn our place besides them after a good death.

Melehan requested water from Aeneas. "Excellent, I began to believe I was the only one who rather not clouded his mind with the alcohol, very well. Please follow me towards the inner chamber" Aeneas said, "There is much to discuss indeed. We can do so in private."

Once they arrived at the chamber a large carafe of water had already been placed on the table as well as two glasses. Aeneas took the carafe and filled both glasses "Please take a seat lord Melehan and tell me of your religion apart from your codes."

Nodding his thanks and taking a seat at the table, Melehan sipped the water lightly as he pondered his response to Aeneas, essaying to gauge the intent behind the question.

For those who are on the path, the primes are of great importance, or our code as you know it. A warrior cannot hope to fulfil his destiny and gain his place in the celestial palace unless he strictly adheres to it... Few have the discipline necessary, and fewer still succeed. The best known recent example would be Shinya Ironhorse, whose selflessness and dedication earned him place as a peer amongst our gods. In our every action must we prove ourselves as he did, and constantly push ourselves to show ourselves worthy in the eyes of the dragons.

Our civilisation rests on the twin pillars of strength and order, pillars that can only be strenghtened by rectitude, righteousness and fairness. Thus rectitude is widely regarded as the most important aspect of the primes, preparing us in this life for what lies beyond. I am sorry, as you can see, I can give you no response about our faith by omitting the code entirely. Our faith, acts and philosophy are deeply intertwined and it would be amiss for me to neglect one in mentioning the other, or the message of the way is irrevocably diluted. I hope that answers your question, I'd be pleased to elaborate on any aspect of the Way.

And thank you again for inviting me for dialogue, I'm afraid your predecessor lacked your vision and tolerance.
