Countess Katherine is close, but quite wrong on several key events in her speculation. For example, there was no true rebellion, as that was foiled when Spiritmonger's participation in the underground caused a general drop in rebel conspirators. Here is my rough account of the Spiritmonger Incident:

  • 1) Spiritmonger has been funding not the interests of Abington with his sizeable and much-needed tax shares, but bigger temples for his Pantheist faith. Furthermore, he has also been lax in defending his duchal regions from monsters - one particular incident stands out in which a battle was lost, and he sat in Riverholm (as he has continuously) with troops that could have helped. Lastly he has been absolutely silent with participation in the Royal Council, as if he is indifferent to Abington's care. Given all this, Gauihu and the other High Council members confer, and decide to ask for Spiritmonger's resignation.
  • 2) Gauihu privately orders Spiritmonger to step down, giving him a chance to avoid any public confrontation or questions about his abilities.
  • 3) Spiritmonger refuses in an open letter to the whole Royal Council, stating how insulted he is, demands reasons.
  • 4) Magnus the Mighty, Callisto and Gauihu offer these reasons. Gauihu prefers to emphasize that the key reason is the Duke owes allegiance to, and serves at the leisure of, the King, just as knights do lords and soldiers do knights.
  • 5) Spiritmonger continues to demand reasons and repeats his blunt refusal.
  • 6) Gauihu removes him from the Royal Council and, tipped off that rebel underground movement's increased, has Spiritmonger investigated and followed to a conspiratorial meeting.
  • 7) Gauihu informs Arch Priest Magnus the Mighty, who issues a ban on Spiritmonger for Conspiracy to Commit Treason.
  • 8) Now to the entire of the realm, Spiritmonger declares his innocence, repeats his refusal to step down, and tries to get the focus on how evil Gauihu is for asking.
  • 9) Gauihu confirms Spiritmonger's guilt and again emphasizes that whatever else, Spiritmonger has now betrayed the realm and committed a high crime.
  • 10) Spiritmonger secedes the Duchy of Riverholm to avoid banishment and maintain power. Incidentally, as soon as the Duchy secedes rebel underground conspirators drop by about half.
