Shiverwood gained its name long before the modern day norsemen arrived, for as the largest forest in the north it was also the coldest. Legend speaks of early settlers of the area freezing to death during their first winter not realizing just how cold it was here. The vast and rich woodland consists of pine, oak, ash and birch trees while the lush undergrowth is crowded with ferns, berry bushes and thorn patches. The largest tree species found here was named after the forest as it is not found anywhere else on Atamara, the Shiverwood. These gigantic, ancient trees are found in patches ranging several hundred yards in area.

There are a handful of major roads crossing the woods to other surrounding regions and many a woodsman resides here and in harmony with the natural surroundings. Log homes can be found along well travelled paths and roads, while a few villages are built into the tree heights themselves. The lofty villages are connected by an array of rope and plank bridges while remaining largely obscured during the day. Were it not for the evening illuminates, the elevated living would go completely unnoticed by a passerby.

The resident squirrel population has a reputation for being hearty, intelligent and cunning. There are stories of them stealing small goods from homes and raiding pantries with external entrances. Some of the local woodsmen have taken to brewing squirrel head ale by a highly coveted and secret process that only a few are aware of. These brewmasters cull the population of squirrels on a yearly basis for their brewing needs.

The few formal structures found here include the lord’s manor house, a temple to Hörgr of Makar, three lumber mills and the Shiverwood Gentlemen’s Club which was founded by Raud Strong of old Norland. Shiverwood is also the birthplace of The Way of the Hammer by Heironeous the long-winded during Norland's Golden Age.
