Description

Situated as it is on an island in the center of Dwilight, Port Raviel and her sister city of Port Nebel, maintain a significant presence in Dwilight as twin trading hubs in the midst of the Inner Seas. The city is a fragmented patchwork of various districts, poverty and wealth, prosperity and ruin. The city boasts some of D'Hara's most beautiful palaces, while several districts are still rebuilding from the Long Winter. Though the commoners may have long forgotten the intricacies of their city's long history, it is still reflected in the city's architecture, as numerous buildings still stand and continue to be used by the city's inhabitants.

Districts

Merchant District

The city's most cunning merchants managed to turn a great profit once the Long Winter had passed. This profit was then funneled directly into the Merchant District's reconstruction, leading to its swift recovery while other, poorer parts of the city lag behind in ruin and squalor. There are many different wealthy folks in this district, many of whom prosper greatly from the Veinsormoot - indeed many traders here are Terran and Barcan, with a smattering of expatriate Madinans, Farronites, Fissoans, and Lurians.

Maritime District

This district is home to the city's fishermen, seafarers, and most commoners. The Maritime District was once one of Port Raviel's great spectacles, boasting fish markets, shipyards, mercenary companies, and navigator guilds. During the Long Winter, this district descended into anarchy first. Famine combined with Bloodmoon-fueled gang warfare lead to horrible atrocities. Today, this district is essentially a slum. The ancient Ravielan navigator guilds maintain control over the maritime peasants through various criminal means. The district is now known for prostitution, wrestling, assassins, and Bloodmoon smuggling.

Temple District

This district was heavily looted during the Long Winter. Many of the temples are in ruins, with a large husk of a building that used to be a popular place of worship in Verdis Elementum. Some of the temples have been restored, with Sanguis Astroism emerging as the most powerful religion in the district. However nothing currently exists beyond primitive temples established in the ruins of larger, older churches.

Inner Ward

The Inner Ward is a fortified complex - a city within a city. It is home to the Old Capitol, a vast complex of abandoned government offices that used to serve as D'Hara's administrative capital. The complex was somehow not completely destroyed by the time of anarchy, though it has a haunting emptiness to it. The Inner Ward also houses the Ducal Palace, home of the Duke of Raviel. From a commanding position atop a rocky hill, the Royal Palace looks out over the city. The Royal Palace is home to King Cenarious Stormrage, though he has not been seen for many years. Almost no one is granted entry to the Royal Palace, and intruders are usually killed on sight.

Economy

Known primarily for its trade, Port Raviel also has a number of craftsmen who manufacture a wide range of items from the numerous trade resources that flow through the city daily. By far the largest of these trades are the city's ship works. Famous for crafting every type of ship imaginable, from short range fishing vessels to deep sea traders (not to mention the occasional warship), the city's ships are sailed far and wide through out all of Dwilight. Other large trades include stone carving, the crafting of various types of clothing (both high and low end), fishing supplies (ranging from hooks and line to large nets and rigging), and numerous types of artwork (painting and sculpture has been growing quite abundant in recent years).

The city and surrounding countryside are the birth place of the trade in Bloodmoon fruit prior to the arrival of the civilized kingdoms of Melodia, Shadovar and later D'Hara. Despite it's abundance in the region, the fruit is now rarely eaten raw, out of fear for the dangerous long-term effects. Furthermore, the planting of the tree has been restricted and less fruitful and weaker fruit-bearing varieties have been grown to replace the native wild plant, making it less of a public health concern than it used to be.
