Mathias having also finished his meal then stood up and motioned for Sorsha to stand as well, "Sorsha, I have an idea for us. You see there is a traveling bazaar that has stopped in my city for the week. What say we go and take a look around?"

At his question, she was tempted to decline but seeing the look on his face she decided against and agreed. “Very well,” she gave him her hand, which he took leading her out of the room.

With that Mathias held the dinning hall door for Sorsha and watched as she left still wearing her tight black leather, "Look at that fine backside," he thought to himself in an extreme moment of lust.

The two then walking outside walked through the courtyard and passed by the guard station in the palace. Then snapping his fingers above his head as they pass a squad of ten guards fully armed came rushing out and began to follow the two.

"Sorry for the tagalongs my lady, but I don't trust these foreigners as far as I can throw them. Please forgive the extra precaution."

“No apology necessary, do not forget, I know you… were you to leave without them, then I would wonder.” At that he gave a light laugh. They walked for a while until they reached the city proper, had she looked over her shoulder she would see the palace overlooking the city. Like a constant guardian, seeing all.

They walked through the streets, everywhere they looked something interesting to be seen. “Was there anything specific you wished to see?” she asked him.

"No where particular, just thought that this might help get your mind off things, and hey if you find anything you like then all the better." The two continued to walk through the street until they ended up by the docks where some exotic animals were being kept.

"Hmm, I wonder what creatures from the four corners these travels have brought with them? Care to take a look?"

Sorsha nodded and let him lead the way. The guards followed them through the city, and people stopped what they were doing to watch them. Some stood with surprise, others bowed deeply when they noticed the Duke. He warily nodded to some and continued until they reached a secluded area with several guards posted.

Several cages dotted the area, and the man in charge approached them. He spoke to Mathias, and Sorsha looked past them into the cages. She noticed tigers, black cats, lions… she couldn’t see much more from where she stood. “Could we go further in?” she asked Mathias and the man bobbed his head eager to please. “Of course M’lady, do I have a treat for you,” he motioned for them to follow and walked through. Some of the cats meowed their exotic calls, growling and the animal handler beat at their cages with his whip, yelling at them to be quiet. At this Sorsha frowned and looked to Mathias questioningly.

A smirk came across Mathias face as the man beat the wild animals. "My Lady," Mathias said as he turned to Sorsha. "Would you like one of these beasts?” he said as he pointed to the cage filled with wild cats.

At his question, Sorsha’s brow rose but she didn’t answer him, she only watched the cages more attentively. In one, there was a small cat, appearing smaller than the rest. Upon closer inspection she realized it was only a cub.

When she approached, it mewled pitifully and the man kicked the cage. Sorsha stepped forward. “What type of cat is this?” she asked and he sneered.

“That one der’s an ocelot, its mother was brave enough to attack me” he answered and returned to frightening the animal, "but I took care of her good." He was making himself superior to the caged being, as if he needed to prove he was.

Turning to Mathias she grinned maliciously, her hands lowered to the handles of her daggers. “Can I kill him then take the Ocelot?” she asked with a purposely sweet voice.

Mathias let out a short laugh at Sorsha’s request, "Go ahead I could care less what you do with this drifter. As to the animal..." Mathias then reached into his pocket and pulled out a few gold coins and then threw them to the head merchant in charge. "It is yours."

The handler gaped at her words and backed up as she neared him, slowly pulling out her daggers. When she finally did, he squeaked, jumping out of her way and the guards behind them pulled around to form a circle. The man clearly seeing he was at a disadvantage dropped his whip.

Tucking her daggers back where they belonged, Sorsha kneeled before the cage, “open it,” she ordered and he nodded his head quickly fearing for his life. He unlocked it and backed up, Sorsha moved in slowly, the cub was hardly a threat, if anything it looked weakened, most likely from lack of attention. It backed up slowly and she whispered to it in Gaelic. It simply kept crawling further back into the cage, fearing any type of contact.

Standing tall once more, she closed the cage and locked it once more. “Have it delivered to the Ducal Palace,” she ordered him and he nodded again.

She then turned to face Mathias, this time her smile genuine. “Thank you Mathias,” she whispered.

While Sorsha was concentrating on her new pet Mathias motioned for one of his guards to come to him. Then whispering into his ear he said, "Arrest this man and send him to the gallows, however make sure it is a weak rope I only wish to scare the man."

"My Lady you’re quite welcome." Then snapping his fingers twice three of Mathias guards surrounded the keeper and the Sergeant stated in his booming voice, "Sir you are now under arrest for insulting Duke Mathias’ close friend Dame Sorsha of Nebel, you are hereby sentenced to death. Your sentence is to be carried out in the public square this very afternoon!" The two other guards then grabbed the man by the arms and hurried him off to the dungeon.

Mathias walked up behind the head merchant and patted him on the back, then slipping another few coins in his pocket said, "Keep up the good work."

Mathias then turned back to Sorsha and said, "My Lady why don't we head back to the Palace? I would so love to see your new pet."

Sorsha watched blankly as the guards took the man away, she didn’t care what happened to him one way or another. The cage was also carried away to the Palace and she nodded to Mathias. “Yes let’s return,” she slid her hands along his arm and walked back with him.

They passed a small table as a hawker yelled for her attention. “My lady, such a woman as yourself needs something to compliment your exotic beauty,” he flattered and motioned to his wares. Turning to look at him, she could then see the jewellery laid out on the table before him.

She pulled Mathias in for a closer look, glancing around to dangling chains on a long string, to bracelets and rings laid out. “You have such wondrous eyes,” he noticed with a tinge of awe in his voice, “a truly rare sight to see,” he continued and she ignored the man as he kept giving her compliments. “True beauty, one as fine as yourself only deserves the best,” he said exaggeratingly and Mathias smirked with pleasure at his words.

Eventually she raised her hand and narrowed her eyes, “stop talking,” she told him and he stammered, “uhm, well,” she looked up again and he closed his mouth. “Better,” she said and reached in, examining a long thick boxed silver chain. “This one,” she pointed and he nodded, removing the chain and slid it into a small velvet pouch.

She paid him and he handed her the pouch. They walked away this time making it back. When they arrived at the palace the guards returned to their stations and they were alone once more.

As they neared the entrance, Sorsha reached for Mathias’ hand and set the small pouch into his hand. “This is for you…for the vial,” she added softly.

She didn’t wait to hear his words, actually she didn’t want to revisit the awkward moment any longer than necessary and walked through the entrance. She could feel his presence at her back as he followed her in.

Asking a young maidservant who passed her, she asked, “where has the cage been delivered?” The young woman blinked and pointed down towards the hall, “Small room, passed the library,” she told her and Sorsha stopped walking. “The library,” she whispered, and the void inside her flared. Conrac’s library…Shaking her head, she headed for the small room.

The cage was dead center of the room and she removed her gauntlets, setting them on the table. She paused momentarily to look at her bruised hand and quickly looked back to the Ocelot. Upon seeing her it mewled and crept further into the cage. Sorsha unlocked the cage once more and kneeled before it.

At first she spoke to it softly, not really saying anything just to get it used to the sound of her voice.

Mathias sat into a chair in the room and quietly watched. She could feel his gaze upon her as she continued to whisper to the animal. The cat kept hiding into the straw on the bottom of the cage. Small black spots covered its tan hide large bright blue eyes watched her fearfully and large paws dwarfed the rest of its small body.  “You’re hungry aren’t you?” she purred softly and it hid beneath the straw again and she giggled softly without realizing she was doing it.

Mathias gleefully sat in his chair and watched as Sorsha was trying to coax the animal out of its cage. Mathias then gave a quick snap of his fingers and a servant came out of the shadows. "What can I do for you sire?" she said. TO which Mathias replied, "Bring Dame Sorsha some fresh ground up Tuna." As the servant disappeared into the background Mathias just sat and watched the beautiful woman in front of him.

Sorsha heard Mathias’ request and looked over at him. He seemed perfectly happy from where he sat and she rewarded him with a rare smile. Returning to the animal, she spoke in Gaelic again, her language was enticing, musical, tempting and the cat sniffed the air.

A few moments later the servant returned with the bowl of food, and Sorsha took it. “Some fresh milk as well,” she asked then added, “in a small skin.”

The woman bowed, leaving in search of the items again. Taking the bowl, Sorsha set it right between her and the Ocelot. The cat sniffed at the air again and gave a pitiful meow, it crept forward with its round ears drawn back, fearing she would touch it. She let it lick the food and then it stole a big chunk and crawled back in.

Sorsha watched quietly as it ate. When it was done, it attempted to take more food again. It did this a few times until it realized she wasn’t going to harm it. Patiently biding her time, she waited until he was half way through and she delicately reached it to touch the side of his head, scratching below one of its ears. It moved into her hand, seeking the warm caress and then purred.

“There you are álainn,” she smiled, actually pleased by its reaction.

The servant then returned with her skin of milk. Without any sudden movement she backed up. She took the skin, and pierced a small hole with the tip of her dagger. She then approached the ocelot again, and dripped a bit of milk. When it noticed her movement, it approached, this time licking the milk. It wasn’t long it was sucking the end of the skin and Sorsha slowly scooped it into her arms. It purred as she backed up, and she protectively cradled it in her arms. She sat on the floor right in front of Mathias and looked up.

Mathias looked at the beast then back to the smiling Sorsha, "Hmph, have you thought of a name for it yet? I doubt you would appreciate it if I called your new pet beast, it, and other unsavory names."

Sorsha looked down to the cat in her arms, it was purring loudly it’s large paws trying to grab hold of the skin. “Well…” she moved it to the side a bit trying to discern its gender. “It is a male, that’s a start.” She examined the spots on him, admiring the cuteness of his face. “I wish to see how he is first before I decide.” She looked again to Mathias, “unless you already have ideas? You did after all get it for me.”

"No My lady, the creature is yours and hence yours to name." Then Mathias stood up and sat next to Sorsha and the creature. The animal then looked at Mathias and Mathias stared right back into its eyes. The Ocelot continued to suck on the skin filled with milk as it stared at Mathias. "Got to show it who is dominant when they’re young." Mathias said bringing his face almost right up next to the creatures face still staring it down. At which point the Ocelot then took its paw and scratched Mathias nose causing Mathias to fling back from the sudden pain, "OW!"

The cat let go the skin, and rushed back into the cage, cowering at Mathias’ voice.

“Well even though he was somewhat broken, he’s kept some of his spirit,” she mused. Forgetting the cat, she looked to Mathias and pulled away his hand from his nose, bringing his face to hers. “Its just a small nick,” she laughed at the watery look in his eyes and his affronted expression. “I guess he showed you who was dominant,” she teased.

Her hand lingered on his face and she lightly touched the cut.

His eye twitching from both the pain and anger caused by the beast Mathias forced a smile. "Yes I guess he did. Heh." Then moving over to the cage Mathias reached in and grabbed the Ocelot from behind the neck and brought it to his lap. He then began to play with it head and scratch its ears. Though because of the sudden way in which Mathias grabbed it the ocelot tried its best to get away. Then finally deciding to let it go it ran over to Sorsha and cowered in her lap. "Well, seems like it has taken a liking to you."

Sorsha scooped it up again and scratched his ears. She then scratched his tummy and he returned to purring. “I guess it did,” she smiled, the cold woman momentarily softened by the creature. “I’m sure it will get used to you though. I know from personal experience you come on strong but you slowly make a permanent mark until all we know is a compulsion to return. He will return,” she said softly, “just give him time.”

At that Sorsha yawned. The day was growing late and she realized she had spent its entirety with Mathias. She looked out to the night sky and then back to the Ocelot, “you should be sleeping, but you’re wide awake,” she remarked.

"It is not that strange, I mean I have heard of monsters who only come out at night and other beast of the sorts who do the same thing. Perhaps this is but another of those night dwelling creatures."

Mathias then stood up and dusted himself off, and then held out his hand in order to aid her in standing. "My Lady it has become quite late and we both need our sleep. I have already made arrangements for a room that you can stay in if you desire it. Though I hate that I have to end this wonderful day so abruptly I feel that I must."

At his words of ending the night and to having a room prepared for her Sorsha felt a flutter in her stomach. She didn’t want him to leave, worse she didn’t want to sleep alone, she didn’t want the nightmares to return. Whether sleeping now or awake, the insanity was setting in too completely but it was always worse in her sleep.

Her hand reached out for his and she held on tightly. “Could you take me to my room?” she asked trying to sound completely indifferent on the matter but she was failing miserably.

Sensing the fear within her Mathias replied, "Of course. It would be my pleasure." At that Mathias motioned for one of his servants to take the cage now once again filled with the Ocelot and bring it to Sorsha room.

As the two slowly walked towards the room Mathias said, "My Lady I shall have one of my servant on call for you throughout the night. If you need anything just ask for her. As well I shall have two guards stationed outside your door just as a precaution." The two then entered the room and Mathias watched as she crawled into the bed. Then walking over to her he kissed her forehead and said, "I love you." Then turning around Mathias walked out the room and towards his own bed.

Sorsha counted his steps as he left the room, each taking him further from her, each bringing her closer to the darkness. She closed her eyes as the door closed behind him and then whispered back, “I love you Mathias.” At least as much as she ever could now.

She blew out the candle and blackness settled into the room. She looked over and could see the cat’s eyes glowing in the dark. A nocturnal animal? Slipping out of bed, she went to the cage and took her cat out. She lay down with it in the crook of her arm and rubbed his ears and pet his sleek fur, trying not to think of anything but resisting sleep at every turn.

The darkness in the room suddenly lifted and Sorsha sat up in bed. Her ocelot hissed and growled, curling his back. Blinking, she looked around the room and there was a light laughter. “Oh how precious…” a voice sounded and Sorsha closed her eyes with recognition. “It’s incredible how quickly you go soft.”

“But I didn’t,” Sorsha mumbled and her cat ran off. To her right Kaylan appeared, wearing blood red leathers like her own. “Don’t even,” Kaylan raised her hand with a hiss. “I don’t want to hear another thing from you but your screaming.”

Sorsha’s eyes filled with tears at the promise and she crawled further back into the bed. “Please…” she said softly and Kaylan backhanded her so hard she flew off the bed. “Its been a while, I think I’m going to enjoy this.”

She tried to move back but she couldn’t escape her she knew. For how could one escape the confines of their own mind? “NO…” she whimpered as more tears filled her eyes. “I promise I’ll try harder, I won’t disappoint you again.”

“Oh I know you won’t,” Kaylan said flatly.

From the room provided for her by Mathias, echoed a blood curdling scream that reached the ends of the hall, alerting the guards and the servant who were to stand watch. The guards broke through the room to assist the Lady in distress. They looked to the empty bed, and then to the floor. Sorsha’s eyes were closed, she appeared well, but she was breathing erratically, tears flowing on her face. She stopped for a moment, and they watched as she let out another awful scream. “Get the Duke,” the guard told the servant and she nodded her head with large eyes, running off in the other direction.

"My Lord, there is a problem!" said a voice from the other side of Mathias bedroom chamber door. "Who is it? And what has happened?" replied Mathias. "My Lord something has happened to Lady Sorsha we request your assistance right away." Then standing up Mathias still wearing his one piece white nightgown grabbed an oil lamp from his bed stand, lit it and walked to Sorsha's room.

Opening the door the ocelot that Mathias had just bought Sorsha came and ran behind his legs then began to hiss at Sorsha. "My Lady, what has happened?"

The servant stood behind her Duke and shook her head. “We do not know my lord, there was screaming from within her chamber, we thought she was being attacked, but we found her like this on the floor.” The woman approached Sorsha and slowly attempted to touch her. Sorsha whimpered and cried out, her back arching in pain, “Kaylan… please no…” she managed to breathe but she was still fast asleep.

The servant tried to wake Sorsha but she was still crying and suddenly screamed again. “The Lady is possessed with evil spirits!” The woman suddenly said and ran out of the door. The guards behind her watched and as battle hardened as they seemed, they blanched and they turned to the Duke hoping he would do something.

Squinting his eyes, and slightly annoyed at having been awoken in the middle of the night Mathias walked over to Sorsha on the floor. He then sat next to her and put her head in his lap. "Sorsha, wake up." Shaking her slightly with one hand and rubbing her head with the other, Sorsha slowly began to awaken.

Sorsha’s pain began to subside and the coldness was replaced with warmth. “Sorsha, wake up,” she heard his voice and whimpered, “Mathias?” The agony within ebbed and she felt a gentle rocking and slowly opened her eyes. Looking up, she realized Mathias was holding her, his hand brushing the hair away from her face. Immediately she tensed up and looked around the room, noticing the guards who both had their weapons out, pointing at her.

She didn’t know what to say. She licked her dry lips and moved away from him, mortified. “I will leave now,” she deadpanned, she really didn't want to, she wanted him to give her a reason to stay. But she was unable to ask, or show her appreciation, she didn't know what else to do. She could only imagine what they had walked into. If she began to get soft again, would she ever survive the punishment Kaylan gave her next time?

A little taken back by Sorsha running away from him, he stood and said, "My Lady, clearly this room has been possessed by some evil, and unfortunately I don't have another ready for you to sleep in. So then if you will not take it as an insult to your honor I would welcome you to my bed for the night until better arrangements can be made."

Mathias then shooed his servants and the guards out the room. He then walked up to Sorsha rested his hand on her shoulder and said, "They will not know about your illness. I know it was the dreams again and I will not let you fight them alone. Heh, we won't let you fight them alone." he said picking up the ocelot and handing it to her.

Sorsha took the cat and tucked in into her arms, it was trembling and so was she. At Mathias’ words, she exhaled and leaned into him, closing her eyes. “I’m sorry,” she mumbled into him and he held her closely. Leading her out of the room, she followed quietly. They walked in silence until they reached his bedchamber. In its center was an extremely large bed, one fit for a Duke, or more like a King. He motioned for her to get into it. Setting the cat down beside her she lay down and curled into one side of it. When he lay down it was on the other side of the bed.

He was true to his word, he didn’t want to insult her honor, but right now she could care less. “Hold me please,” she asked him softly. There was silence, and a few moments later his arms reached over and pulled her to him. She intertwined her fingers to his and a few seconds later the ocelot walked over to lie beside her, adding a soothing purr to the darkness. The beating of her heart was loud in her ears as she dreaded closing her eyes again.
