"Sorsha, it is good to see you again." Hexic said as he took her hand and gave a slight bow. "I suspected you were pregnant back on our voyage to and from Paisly. No D'Haran noble, man nor women becomes ill on a vessel after regular travel between the Ports." Hexic took a seat, and Lorlan entered the room after hearing his name. He set a place for Hexic, and poured him some wine. Sorsha took her seat as well, and Hexic raised his goblet. "To new life!"

Asriel opened his mouth to make some dry reply to Hexic's words but was saved the need to do so by Sorsha. He sedately returned to his place, he'd be damned if he was going to make it look like he was embarrassed about anything.

Asriel followed suit and raised his own goblet. "To new life." he echoed.

Sorsha smiled at Hexic’s words, he was right, someone who had traveled the sea as much as she, should no longer experience sea sickness. Of course pregnancy had been the last thing on her mind at the time. She sat with the men and raised her cup as Hexic and Asriel raised theirs, “to new life,” she repeated softly and took a drink. Her hand caressed her stomach and she set the cup down. “Hexic, you have met Sir Asriel?” she indicated unsure how much they knew one another. “He was gracious enough to assist Port Nebel with some much needed bureaucratic work. How are matters in Qubel Lighthouse?”

Lorlan then returned with a handful of servants, and large bowls of soup were set before the nobles. “I apologize,” she looked to the food, “like I mentioned before, food is scarce at the moment.” She then took her spoon and brought some soup to her lips. She blew on it softly and then put it into her mouth. The taste wasn’t as it should be, it seemed rather bland, and dare she say awful. She smiled and forced herself to swallow. “It does leave much to be desired,” she grinned slightly embarrassed. “There shall be a heartier meal to follow I promise.”

Hexic took a generous sip of wine, and replied to Sorsha. "Not since Asriel returned to D'Hara, no. While Katayanna was here, I am not sure." Hexic turned to Asriel "Do you remember?"

"Qubel Lighthouse is faring well, thank you. Soon construction will commence, and the walls will receive repair. How fares Port Nebel? Keeping you busy is it?"

Hexic tried some soup, and didn't think it was all that bad. He added some salt to help make it less bland. "Its not so bad." Hexic said as he licked his lips "My unit's cook, Michael, calls himself a cook but has been serving worse than this lately. I suppose my standards are not as they should be for a Duke." With the salt, Hexic decided it was definitely superior to what Michael had been serving, and cleaned up his bowl faster than his companions, requesting a second helping.

Sorsha finished her soup, but didn’t ask for a second helping. It was probably due to the fact she had eaten so much of it lately, the taste wasn’t as appetizing as it should be. “Yes Port Nebel has been keeping me busy. I try to help as much as I can, but the indifference within the city is not helping me accomplish my work. Hopefully Sir Asriel here will help me and making them turn around and see I am only trying to help.”

Done with her soup, she waited for the men to finish as well and then signaled for a servant to take away their bowls. Next a platter with breaded herbed chicken, scalloped potatoes, and an assortment of vegetables in a drizzle of sauce was served. Tossed salad was served in small bowls. Fresh warm bread was added to the table with butter and a saucer of gravy. She looked at the food with great appetite, she usually didn’t eat so well, but she figured she would always properly entertain her guests.

Without waiting, she dug in and started eating politeness would have to wait this time, she felt like she hadn’t eaten in weeks. Of course she knew it was due to eating for two.

Taking her salad, she dumped the entire content over her potatoes and mixed them together, forgetting the men beside her. Next she added gravy and mixed it again. She scooped some up and quickly ate it. “Mmmm” she moaned lightly as she ate and then looked up, remembering the men with her. Her cheeks were full and she grinned shyly. She chewed slowly, and then swallowed. “Forgive me,” she apologized, “these strange cravings,” she explained and then without waiting returned to her food. Looking up she then noticed cucumbers she’d had the cook marinate in wine and ate one. “You have to try these… they are absolutely amazing,” she indicated.

Asriel shook his head in response to Hexic's question, he could not remember meeting Hexic before either. Then he turned his attention to the soup. It certainly wasn't the best he has tasted, but by no means the worst either. It was perfectly adequate and he emptied the bowl completely. After all, it would be rude not to leave an empty plate.

When the main course arrived he helped himself to some chicken and vegetables and poured some gravy over his meat. This was certainly a fine meal, not too different from the ones he remembered from childhood. A light smile flickered across his face at the gusto with which Sorsha was eating. No matter how else things were affecting her, they certainly hadn't harmed her appetite.

In response to her words he leant forwards and took one of the cucumbers to try it. The taste was... unusual, but pleasant.

"I must say," he commented "this truly is a wonderful meal. You certainly have a wonderful chef. I can't remember the last time I was this well fed. I can only hope that you will be able to visit my estate sometime so that I can repay your kind hospitality."

Hexic politely ate the chicken and potatoes, which were delicious, but left the marinated vegetables. With the second helping of soup, he was quite full. "I will take your word for it. I try not to indulge too much." Hexic turned to Asriel "So tell me, how do you feel about the Ambassador being appointed Marquis of Paisland? Frankly, I view it as contradictory to his primary role as Ambassador. How is he expected to travel to distant realms when he is now anchored to a region?"

Sorsha dug into her chicken and waited for Sir Asriel’s opinion on Machiavel’s appointment. She had to admit up until only recently did he begin to make a public appearance and spoke up, showing interest in D’Hara’s internal affairs. She knew the reason for but she wasn’t about to voice it out loud. The King had after all made his choice and she respected his decision.

"Personally I disagree with his appointment. As you say, he cannot be an effective ambassador if he's in charge of one of our frontier regions. I also have misgivings about his reasons for seeking such a position. I am not sure that he is not after it simply for personal gain. Of course, this is probably highly unfair of me since I have no basis for this other than gut instinct. In any event, I doubt the King would put someone he distrusts in command of Paisland, and the King knows Lord

Machiavel far better than I."

Asriel gave a wry smile, "Of course, my misgiving about Lord Machiavel may just be due to jealousy. Even though I have done little to deserve it I must confess I have sometimes dreamed of becoming lord of Paisland. It's foolish of me, I know, but I suppose a man can dream."

Lowering her eyes, she examined her food with a secret smile. Well at least she wasn’t the only one who shared the opinion. “We will have to be patient and see how it all unfolds from here on out and Sir Asriel, more opportunities will arise I am sure,” she looked at him and smiled.

As she did, her ocelot waltzed into the room and sat beside her, nudging her leg and she reached over to scratch his head. Satisfied, it lowered itself to the ground and curled up at her feet.

“After the meal, would you care to join me in the garden?” she offered.

"Alas, I need to be returning the the Lighthouse. There is much work to do. If you'll excuse me." Hexic stood to leave, and walked so that his words to Lorlan wouldn't be suspicious.

"Another thing Lorlan. I have brought a gift for the Duchess, but do not desire to make a big fuss, nor give her opportunity to reject it. Tell her it is the warship Guardian, and that it is in the harbour. I give it to her to congratulate her on her pregnancy and promotion." Duke Hexic whispered to the servant, and departed.
