Sorsha had been traveling for days now. She had admired the land at first, but soon what had been beautiful turned dark and seemed barren. The distraction had been good, it kept her from thinking too much. Her figure had returned to what it usually was and she no longer wore the loose dresses she had been for her pregnancy, but now returned to her leathers. The child was lost… the mere thought of it brought sadness but she tried to ignore the pain and concentrated on the path ahead.

Nightmarch… she had no idea where to go from here. She had followed her instinct, and that of her dreams. Should she make some noise to announce her presence? How would she know where to go next? Maybe she should just wait? It was probably best if she remained silent, the place didn’t exactly look inviting. She was alone, she hadn’t even told anyone she was leaving, she had just left.

Finding a large rock, she carefully walked around it, and sat. Looking to the horizon, she began to think. She was here to visit Rathan’s resting place… would she find forgiveness? Her hands tightened and she sighed. Maybe this was a horrible idea, what if she left worse?

He had waited for days, knowing that she would come... Sooner or later. And she did. He followed, unseen, and observed her from a distance. He knew what she was capable of and didn't want to have to resort to violence... Not that he thought he would have to...

Sorsha stopped to rest, and he approached, his dark robes pulled close, and his hood concealing his face. He stepped into view, but said nothing.

Sorsha looked up to the new figure before her and turned her head to the side, still giving him a sidelong glance as if to examine him, determine his intentions, and yet tried to gauge the surrounding area for others, if there were any.

There was no greeting, they just stood there, in silence. Sorsha rose from where she sat yet kept her distance. “I am Sorsha McDowell,” she said simply, no titles to be given here, she didn’t much care of their weight… they meant nothing to her now…

“Have you been sent by Master Chadwick?” she questioned, her blue violet eyes looking on, quizzically.

Rathan lowered his hood.

"A'thaisce, I know who you are. I dare say I have not been sent by him, good for nothing adviser of mine." he said gently, stepping forward towards her, his arms open for an embrace.

Sorsha watched as he lowered his hood and gave one long slow blink. His voice then filled the silence and she swallowed her next words. It was impossible… he was dead… she had watched as he fell from the tower. Washed his blood from her hands countless times in memories of shadowed madness.

“Rathan?” she said his name, her voice choking around the lump in her throat. Unshed tears shone in her eyes and she let out a small sob. It couldn’t be true… she must be dreaming again, but she didn’t care. She rushed into his arms and tightly wrapped hers around him. “It’s really you,” she said now that she could feel him. She closed her eyes and kissed him. A desperate kiss, needing to simply feel him.

“I’m so sorry,” she whispered softly, “I’m sorry,” she said again, this time her voice trembling. “I didn’t want to... I wanted to go with you, I wanted it so much, but I was trapped…” she said again. Unable to stop herself she kissed him again.

Rathan pulled her in tight, and kissed her back, as if he wouldn't ever get the chance to again. He felt relieved, overjoyed... He could hardly contain himself.

"Shhh... It's alright... I know you were, and that's why I had to do what I did. Shhhh." he whispered in her ear, gently shushing her as he held her tight, not wanting to ever let go of her.

"I've missed you..."

Rathan whispered in her ears and she broke down in his arms. He was truly alive and she had not killed him as she thought. Her entire being seemed to fill with a mixture of remorse, and love, the tightness in her chest was making it difficult for her to breathe. Her entire body trembled now and it was all she could do to hold on to him. She didn’t want to let go, this time she would never let go of him no matter what happened. She had been forced to live without him once, thinking him forever gone, but never again.

She couldn’t stop crying, tears continuously filled her eyes and trailed her cheeks and she tried in vain to wipe them. Burying her face into his neck, she whimpered emotionally. “Rathan…I missed you…. I missed you so much.” He smelled like she remembered and she closed her eyes. “I chose you…” she said with a small hiccup trying to catch her breath. “That day in my heart I had chosen you…” she tried to explain, going back to the fateful day where she had been made to choose between him and Mathias. “So much was going on… I was torn in so many directions… please forgive me,” she begged again and kissed his neck. “I had to…” she stopped speaking and bit her trembling lips. It was no use explaining, it had been done. She had broken a part of him with her choice, she knew. It had been in his eyes the moment she said the words.

Now she could change it… she had the chance to prove to him once and for all what she wanted was him. With him there had never been doubt, she knew this now. Always he had been there for her, waiting…

“I love you so much,” she said and kissed him. “I know I can never apologize enough, but let me prove it to you,” she said and locked eyes with his, her words almost desperate.

"You have a funny way of showing it, a'thaisce." he whispered into her ear

"Stabbing people and throwing them out windows, is generally considered rude in most cultures." he joked, his voice gentle and loving. He clung to her as if he would never see her again, relishing the moment.

"I love you too."

At the reminder of what she had done, Sorsha held her breath. She knew by his tone he was joking, but the guilt had been there for so long. This entire time he had been alive and she believed him dead. “Well you didn’t exactly leave me much choice,” she said softly, “you made me fight you…besides grá m'anama, the last time you saw me in Nebel you didn’t exactly welcome me with open arms either.

She held on to him so tightly and closed her eyes as he said he loved her. She loved hearing him say the words, she had missed the sound of his voice, his warmth, the feel of his arms around her.

“Can we go somewhere?” she asked, looking around the barren area wondering at the bleakness of it. “Rathan you haven’t been staying here this entire time have you?” She slid her hands down his arms and took his hands in hers, glancing around again.

"I have. Come, and do mind you pay proper respect." he showed her to the city, with its towering ziggurats and odd architecture. He took her to the humble building he'd been staying in, his notes and books littering the place.

"It's not much... But it works. Nobody here is hunting me either, that's a relief

Sorsha glanced around the room and let go of Rathan’s hand as he walked further in. She smiled remembering his love of books, and couldn’t help wonder what his days had been filled with. Alone with nothing but his thoughts, his hate for what had happened and his thirst for knowledge, he must have found the days extremely long. It wasn’t awful, but still she wished more for him. She would make sure he had more.

She walked further in and sat on his bed. At his reminder of people hunting him, she paused before she looked up at him. “I am glad no one is hunting you either… of course most believe you are dead, so there isn’t anyone for them to hunt down now.”

Looking down, she glanced to her hands and sighed softly. When she looked up again, she wiped away the tears on her cheeks and forced a smile on her face. Her heart soared with happiness to know he was alive, but there was still much left unsaid between them, much to work out and she didn’t even know where to begin.

All she could think of was to beg his forgiveness over and over until the guilt faded… perhaps it never would.

He watched for a moment, his heart swelled with joy at seeing her again... But it faded, and the hurt and hate began to ebb it's way in. He sneered slightly,

"So where is Mathias? He know you're here? I thought you were carrying his child..."

He looked alarmed as he realized the mistake he probably just made and drew a blade, a cold, cruel blade of iron.

"You've led him here to finish me, that's it isn't it?" he said, suspiciously.

His reaction surprised her, but it wasn’t unexpected considering what had led him here. She rose from the bed and put her hands out in a gesture of peace. “Rathan…” she said his name softly, her heart anguished. Oh what had she done to him…

He had once told her he was quick to anger it was in his blood. She had also promised him once to help him with it, but she had never gotten the chance to do so.

She pulled her daggers out and set them on the bed beside her. “Mathias is gone… no one knows his location, he simply disappeared,” she said coldly, anger coming through her own voice. “I no longer carry his child… the child has been lost.”

She then turned her hand to show him the lack of ring on her finger. The only one visible was the half of her McDowell ring… She had taken her wedding ring off long ago, and no longer wore it for people to see, it no longer meant anything to her.

“No one will hurt you, I know you probably can’t believe it, but least of all… from me” the irony of her words wasn’t lost on her, but she needed to convince him to drop his guard. “I love you… I’ve come to this…” she motioned the area, “place to find you. Now that I have you once again, I will not lose you. I refuse to lose you again,” she said firmly. “Please…”

Rathan sheathed his blade, and his voice softened.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know..." he said, knowing what she must have been through, and walked over to her and embraced her again.

"Please don't leave me again."

Sorsha put her arms around his neck and held him tightly. “I won’t Rathan…” she whispered tenderly. She wasn’t the only one in need of comfort, confidence… they both were and their need for one another was greater now than it had ever been. “I promise,” she told him and moved back to look into his eyes. She slid her hands to the back of his neck, kissed him lightly and closed her eyes.

“He left me…” she couldn’t help her tears now. She was such a jumble of emotions. She wanted to be strong for him, wanted to comfort him, but she had needed him so much she just wanted to crumble into him because she knew with him she always could. “His silence grew… and grew until he just disappeared. He didn’t even know I was pregnant,” she swallowed the tears in the back of her throat and clung to him tightly. “I never thought I’d say this but… I hate him…” she said with angry tears. “He took me and used me. He made me choose and then took me away from you with promises he didn’t even try to fulfill.”

She took a shaky breath and leaned her forehead to his, crying. “I want to go back and change it all. So you will have every piece of me that he took…” she said lightly, knowing how hard it must be for him to know these things. She had married the enemy, given herself to him and then gotten with child. Any man would hate her for this, he was no different, in her heart she knew it wasn’t that easy. She expected him to hate her. Her life had never been easy. She had thought herself in love so many times, only to be left with nothing but silence and heartache in the end.

“You’re the one I want to marry,” she sobbed with regret. “I want you…” she said with a heart breaking whisper, her voice almost failing her, “…to make love to me.” Her swollen lips trembled and she sniffed. “It’s your child I want to carry,” her voice finally did fail her and she stopped talking and just cried in Rathan’s arms, the pain of losing everything returned to her. She had tried to take her life away so she could be with him in death at least, even then she had failed.

Pressing her mouth to his, she kissed him passionately, letting out a soft moan of need and anguish. She had wanted him for so long and had resisted so many times, but no more…

"I saw it coming... He was always a self absorbed, arrogant ass. I knew he cared nothing for you. That's why I tried to make him disappear." he said, and was cut off as she kissed him. He kissed her back, and guided them towards the bed.

"I'll kill him if he ever comes back."

Sorsha wiped some of her tears and looked back at him.“If he ever comes back, before you kill him, I will destroy him completely,” she said as she sat back onto the bed with him.

Her words weren’t lightly put, it would be easily done. As much as Rathan was despised in D’hara, Sorsha was adored. “Before he gives you his dying screams, he will wail and moan his regret of ever taking me from you. He will suffer,” she promised through her tears, the darkness within her momentarily rising to the surface.

Leaning into him, she slid her hands along his shoulders and back, kissing him again. “For now though… let’s forget he ever existed,” she whispered into the kiss. “All I want to think about is you...”

Rathan ran a hand through her hair and kissed her back, and ran his hand down her back.

"Anything worth having is worth waiting for they say. I think I've waited long enough... I know some women like to play hard to get a'thaisce, but I think you took it a little too far." he teased her.

“I never do anything half way,” she returned playfully, her tears had dried up and she moved over to sit into his lap. Sorsha had never wanted someone so much, yet resisted so hard to have, and every moment with him had been its own form of torture. For a long time she gazed into his eyes, as if it had only hit her, she was finally with him. No one to tell her what to do, no one around to make her feel like what she was doing was wrong. In that moment she wasn’t the Sorsha she left back in D’Hara, she was his Sorsha. She put everything to the back of her mind and forgot everyone and everything but him.

“And I think I’ve resisted long enough,” she said and without waiting she licked his lower lip and plunged her tongue into his mouth, kissing him fervently. The passion Rathan made her feel was like none she had ever felt and she couldn’t control the fierceness of it.

Rathan kissed her back, savoring the moment he had worked so hard for. He leaned back and pulled her on top of him, and broke of the kiss.

"Do you think there is a more tragic couple out there a'thaisce?"

Leaning into him she seemed to stop at his words, as if thinking them over. “Tragic… hmmm,” she said throughout another kiss, “that depends on how the story ends.” Pulling back she looked into his eyes, “One more deserving of one another? No…I don’t know of any…” she said softly and made a trail of kisses along his chin and to his neck.

Rathan shivered slightly and slid his hands to her waist.

"Deserving... Most definitely. Defying a King, and a Kingdom, all of his Dukes, his wife, and then top it all off with a wedding day tumble out the tower. What a tale we'll tell our children." he said, kissing her on top of her head.

"I suppose we'll leave this part out though." he said grinning suggestively.
