It had been some time since Mathias had gone to the hill, and during that time he had dozed off. In his sleep he began to dream of how the night could have gone if only he had not opened his mouth. He saw Sorsha some time from now in the gown he had given her. That beautiful white gown fit only for her. Saw the smile on her face as she finally accepted the bracelet that would signify their marriage. He saw her pregnant with their kids, and he saw as they raised their children to be strong noble warriors. Then he saw them old lying in bed together, and then a kiss....

During this part of the dream however Mathias was quickly woken up by Lasair licking his face. "Heh... so I see she has abandoned you here as well. Well then I guess I shall take care of you until she returns." Tapping his hand against his leg to signal the beast to follow him, Mathias and Lasair slowly walked back to the Palace. "Well then...I know I feel bad but you must be terrified to be without her. Don't I have ever seen you two separated....Wait a sec why am I even talking to you..." Then rubbing his hand against his head Mathias whispered to himself, "Wow. I must be going crazy."

Returning to the Palace, Mathias and Lasair walked up to his bed chamber were he quickly changed into his night gown and crawled into bed. Lasair then quickly jumping up onto the bed as well curled up by his feet, and the two of them went to sleep.

Mathias awoke in the middle of the night with a hard sweat on his face. Looking around he saw Lasair still sleeping by his feet and to his right laid the dress he had bought for Sorsha. "How did I miss this?" he thought to himself as he picked the dress up imagining Sorsha still in it.

Slipping out of the bed and putting his clothes back on he decided to walk down the hall to a window that faced Nebel. Staring out the window he could have sworn he saw Sorsha riding away from the city towards the townsland. Moments latter Lasair slowly walked up to Mathias and rubbed against his leg.

Mathias then turned and took a seat next to the ocelot. "Well my friend, at least we are not alone." To which Lasair could only reply, "Meow." Then patting him on the head Mathias said, "Good. I assumed that is what you thought."

Putting his face into his palms he began to rub his scalp trying to think on what he should do. When suddenly he stood up, "Oh to hell with this. I will not sit around and mope. If she is to be mine I must give chase. I must show her that I am here. Show her that she need not always come to me, but that I am willing to go to her side."

Running back into his room Mathias grabbed his boots, his cloak, and the ladies dress. Then hurrying down to the stable he searched for his horse Dilu. Asking the stable hand where his horse was he said that Lady Sorsha had come through earlier and took a horse. Thinking the worse Mathias jumped on the first horse he could and rode out of the city with the utmost speed, Lasair close behind.

Moments latter a stable boy came walking up with Dilu having just finished cleaning him. Seeing this the stablehand said to the boy, "Oh so that is where Dilu was. Well I guess our lord is in for a surprise when he finds Sorsha." With that he went back to his cuties cleaning the stable and taking care of the horses.

Passing many riders, non being Sorsha Mathias continued to ride the horse as hard as he could trying to catch up with Sorsha before anything bad happened to her. "Didn't she know," Mathias thought to himself, "that horse is cursed all who ride it turn up dead. Heck the last man who tried to steal it was found but 10 minutes latter dead on the side of the road with the horse standing next to him....I have to find her fast."

Sorsha was varying between running her horse and walking him. She had just slowed down when a horse came whizzing by her so quickly it startled her horse to the side making him buck and she had to grab on to his mane to keep from falling. When she managed to calm her horse, she noticed Lasair bounding behind the rider ahead.

“What in the world?” she mumbled and gave a shrill whistle which made the Ocelot turn around quickly and back to her. “What are you doing out here?” she asked him and then the other rider turned around heading in her direction. She pulled the reins taut to keep her horse from dancing to the side, and when she realized who it was they slipped from her fingers. “Mathias,” she said flatly.

Paying little attention to Sorsha and more to the horse Mathias was bewildered at the situation. "What in the world?" he said as he dismounted his horse and walked over to Sorsha's. "So you didn't take Dilu. Well that is good news, though still worries me as to where he is...I pity the soul that decided to ride him this night." Then almost as if taking a moment of silence Mathias bowed his head for a few seconds before looking back up to Sorsha, "Sorsha, my love. You seem to have left a few things back in the city. For one Lasair, seemed most depressed without you there by his side. As well you left your dress behind...was it not to your liking? If so I can pull some strings and have it refitted or modified to your liking."

At his words Sorsha looked down to the horse and frowned. “No, I found Dilu’s stall empty so I took the horse next to him.” She then looked to Lasair and then to Mathias. “So that’s where you ran off to,” she said to the Ocelot who lay down lazily between them and watched their exchange of words. “And no Mathias,” she leaned slightly forward staring into his eyes, “keep the gown. I shall not need it again,” she told him firmly.

“What do you want from me?” she then asked him coldly. “Have you changed your mind?” She forced a lascivious grin upon her face, and then licked her lips. “Because if you have, it is too late, you missed your chance.”

"My Love, I denied you nothing. I simply wished to make sure that was what you truly wished for." Clenching the dress in his hands Mathias continued, "You claim to be alone...empty yet there I stood and here I stand always by your side. Why do you run from me? Why do you run from what we both want?"

Then walking closer to Sorsha he continued, "Long ago you said I needed to prove my love to you for me to have you. Seems that is no longer what you crave for, you no longer crave for the proof of my love. What then must I do? Sorsha! I don't know what I will do without you at my side!"

“You denied me nothing but there were strings attached Mathias, and we both know I cannot give you what you want in return. It doesn’t matter anymore I doubt that if we were to recreate the moment you would make me feel as I did earlier, it was there, but not anymore,” she said not rising to the occasion to raise her voice as he did, she didn’t care.

“You have proven your love,” she agreed with him, “good job,” she deliberately taunted him. “You have nothing more to prove.”

Then he approached and she looked away, he was asking her what he should do and she shook her head. “You will survive,” she deadpanned “just as I did…” she then dug her heel in the horse’s flank and galloped away. “Just as I always do,” she whispered into the wind.

Mathias dropped to knees and watched as she began to gallop away. "No. I will not let it happen like this." Quickly getting to his feet Mathias jumped up onto his horse and began to chase Sorsha down. Luckily for Mathias the horse Sorsha had chosen happened to be one of his slowest and it took but a few minutes to get her back in sight.

Closing the gap in little time Mathias began to yell to Sorsha, "No! I don't run away from my problems." As he was getting within arms distance of her, he decided to stand and attempt to balance himself on his horse. Then as the two leveled out with each other he jumped from his horse to Sorsha's, and though he nearly missed the jump he was able to grab on and pull himself up onto its back. Then tightly grabbing onto Sorsha so that he could not be shaken loose he said into her ear, "I will never give up on us, and I shall chase you to the ends of the world if it need be."

Sorsha then heard his pursuit and looked over her shoulder at him. “Mathias, stop this madness!” she shouted over the sound of the rushing hooves and then he jumped onto her horse. He grabbed on to her and she tried to shake his hands loose but she was having no luck. He just gave new meaning to the word tenacious.

Throwing her head back at him she managed to daze him and pushed him again, only he was holding on to her hard and fast and pulled her along with him as he slipped off. They tumbled to the ground, in a jumble of arms and legs, the horse kept running away and she stopped a few feet away on her back, her head ringing.

She was on her feet in a daze and when she noticed Mathias on the ground a few feet away she approached him and leaned down to his face, grabbing his shirt in her fist she partly lifted him off the ground. "Are you mad?" she hissed at him. "Do I have to beat some sense into you?" she dropped him to the ground and then struck him across the face.

Still trying to gain his composure from the fall, Mathias was taken by surprise when Sorsha ran up to him and grabbed him by the collar. Still in a daze Mathias could not believe it when Sorsha began to beat him. Though his daze would not last long. Quickly regained his composure Mathias got to his feet and pushed Sorsha away. "Sorsha. What the heck are you...." but before he could finish another punch landed right in his face knocking him back to the ground.

"OW!" screamed Mathias as he brought his hand to his left eye which had already begun to swell from the punch that he took. "Your really out for blood aren't you." he then said to Sorsha. "Well then."

Mathias attempted to close the gap between them but Sorsha had continued to fight. Though now that he was on guard Mathias had no trouble dodging her right fist it was that left one he had problems with. With his ability to see reduced Mathias was unable to dodge her left hand and continued to take blow after blow.

Mathias staggered back, one hand shooting up to cover his face blocking her punches and this time she jammed her foot into his stomach and he fell back to the ground with a loud grunt.

Before all of this happened, she had been safely cocooned into the void, the emptiness until he pushed and pushed so much she was unable to contain it a moment longer.

It had begun with a small spark of bothered indifference until she became uncontrollable. He had been playing with fire and now he was getting burned. “What do I have to do to make you understand?!” She shouted and kicked his side. “I hate everything, me, this life, and everything in it. I gave everything I ever had and got nothing but pain in return! What is there to love? What else do you want from me?!” She screamed and kicked him again this time he groaned doubling over to his side. He wasn’t fighting back, but she couldn’t stop herself and beat at him and then she started to cry, and fell to her knees. She beat at his chest, now screaming with rage and sobbing at the same time.

Mathias was only barely conscious at this point when he noticed that Sorsha was crying while still beating on his chest. Coughing up some blood he smiled at Sorsha, and said, "You are all there is to love...you are all I want...I would give up everything for you..." Still smiling and only barely holding on he waited for the final hit to knock him out.

Sorsha had completely blacked out, unable to see anything or feel anything but the rage inside of her. He then smiled at her and she put all her weight and anger behind her last hit and he slumped back to the ground. When he did, that’s when she stopped moving.

She seemed to come back to herself and her eyes grew round, he wasn’t moving. She gasped and her bloody hands shot up to her mouth. “Mathias?” she called in a small voice and grabbed his shirt and his head lolled to the side.

She then noticed the blood on her knuckles and froze, quickly coming back down to reality. “Mathias…” she said only this time there was a hint of urgency in her voice. “No…” she moaned softly and her hands began to tremble. He had pushed her over the edge and in her rage she had lost her mind and killed him. She tried to shake him again, this time desperately. His face was badly beaten, one eye swollen shut, his lip completely split, blood seeping over them. And it was all her doing.

She had killed him… It was too much… too much at once and she exploded in more tears. Her body felt like it was being pulled in every direction. The pain inside was unbearable, it burned so much she could hardly breathe now. She felt like someone had stabbed her in the chest and twisted the blade.

“Mathias…” she wailed his name through sobs and buried her face into his chest. “Noo…. I’m sorry,” she whispered to him as if he could still hear her. “I’m soo sorry… I… I don’t know what happened. Please forgive me,” she begged him and leaned into him, putting her face to his. “I’m so sorry…” she said the words again but they were barely above a whisper.

He had to have been out for close to 5 minutes when he finally began to come to again. Slowly opening his eyes he saw Sorsha above him now crying. She seemed to be mumbling something about how she had killed him. Slowly lifting his hand he was able to grab her hand holding him, but could only feel the cold. Almost as if she was the one who almost died, and not him.

Slowly regaining his consciousness he opened his eyes to now see Sorsha still above him crying. Seemed she had not yet noticed that he was awake. "Sorsha....it is alright...." then giving a quick cough, "I....told you....that I would never leave you." Then giving a small smile he slowly lifted his head and gave her a small kiss on the cheek.

As he touched her, Sorsha withdrew with shock and gasped again. Then he kissed her cheek and she began to overflow with emotions once more. “Mathias? Oh Mathias!” she cried his name and put her arms around his neck and kissed him. “I thought I had killed you, I thought you were dead,” she explained and then sobbed, “I’m so sorry… I couldn’t control myself, I…” and then she pulled away as if burned.

“I can’t do this, I can’t…” she shook her head and began to walk away, mumbling to herself. This time what Mathias would see would be the full blown madness that had taken her mind. “She’s going to… I’m going to pay again. I can’t…she’s going to keep trying to kill me but she can’t… she can’t…” she wrapped her arms around her waist to hold herself and fell to her knees, corpulent tears now staining her cheeks.

She had lost control of the void and now she couldn’t pull it together again. She was lost, she became incoherent and moaned pitifully as the pain of it all hit her at once. All she had been through came back to the surface and she now had no protection from it. “Kaylan oh my god… Kaylan…” she moaned her cousin’s name. “And Alec, he’s dead, gone,” she whispered softly and groaned miserably. “And Conrac,” she looked up and reached out as if she could still see him there. “You just left… you left me…Why?!” She screamed at nothing. “And you,” she looked over her shoulder at Mathias and her eyes narrowed. “You broke my heart and he took what was left of it with him…” she touched her lip, as if in a different time. “You hit me… you hit me,” she whispered in disbelief. “And all I wanted was to keep you in my heart.”

Then she laughed and looked down to her bloody hands again, “I guess we’re even now.” She grinned and gave a half laugh, half cry. And then she looked up… completely silent, and stopped moving, staring out at nothing.

"Sorsha...." he painfully cried, "that day you hurt me more than any physical pain could ever. The thought of you leaving me that night drove me into a madness, that I almost never came out of." Having lost his breath Mathias began to furiously cough trying to catch his breath. "I don't blame you for anything Sorsha...It was all my fault...."

Slowly crawling over to her bit by bit, he reached for her, "Sorsha...I won’t leave you. I won’t do what he did...I will never abandon you..." Mathias fell into another coughing fit as he waited to see what she would do next.

She didn’t react, she just kept staring out at nothing, there was too much pain and heartache for her to deal with, too many emotions she had kept locked up for months, close to a year. The only outward sign he could see where the tears that just continued to flow on her cheeks and the uncontrollable trembling of her body. She was gone, finally consumed by it all. Sorsha had finally broken, she was shattered.

He had wanted her to return to herself... and she had, but he hadn't anticipated what was left of her.

Mathias now barely able to bring himself to his hands and knees moved closer to Sorsha...Something seemed off about her as if something inside had changed. Resting his head on her shoulder he took a quick breather then noticed that his horse had not run off like the other. Making a weak whistle the horse walked over to the two and began to nudge him.

It would take Mathias quite the long while to stand up, but mustering the strength he was barely able to stand and leaned against the horse. From there he looked down on Sorsha who was still sitting there crying. Tapping on her shoulder he quietly mumbled, "Sorsha we need to go...we are almost to your home, and once there you can rest." At that word, home, something sparked in her mind as she stood up and mounted the horse. Then forcing himself up unto the horse he pulled the reigns and the horse began a gentle gallop towards Nebel which had now come into view.

As they approached her estate Mathias saw coming up behind him Lasair who happened to be carrying in his mouth Sorsha's dress. Keeping up pace with the horse, Lasair followed them all the way to Sorsha’s estate. Upon her arrival the lady’s servants came running out to give the two a hand. Grabbing Sorsha who still happened to be in tears they rushed her to her room where they prepared her for sleep then laid her down in her bed.

Mathias however was not so fortunate, having been able to muster as much strength as he had for the past hour had left him completely worn out. The last thing he remembered before passing out was two of Sorsha's servants dragging him into the estate.
