Sorsha had slowly made her way to a balcony that overlooked Port Raviel, the sun was beginning to set and the summer breeze was beginning to cool. Her leathers were comfortable enough but she was getting hot, she actually gave a momentary thought to a soft flowing gown that would enable her to breathe easier.

She grabbed the stone edge of the balcony and again took to grounding herself. The city below was immense, and she could see the small people going about their daily lives, not knowing what actually took place behind the noble’s lives. They worked hard at what they wanted, they made it their own, but the point was they were happy.

A strong breeze of cool air hit her and she closed her eyes with a smile.

Lycan went down the hallways trying to find Sorsha. He took a left turn and saw her in the balcony overlooking the city. He stopped for a moment just watching her and it seemed she had taken down some of the wall around her. He could see the wine had taken its effect and he approached her looking to the city before them instead of her.

“Are you ok?” he asked genuinely concerned. No matter how bad she had treated him he could see there was some of the old Sorsha still there.

Sorsha’s hands tightened around the rail as she heard Lycan’s voice, her entire body tensing up. She then opened her eyes and looked at him. He was brave to follow her all the way here, or had she given him the impression she needed him somewhere along the evening? No….she thought, that couldn’t be. Her thoughts were all fuzzy, everything surreal, even though she was trying to hold on to her control with an iron grip it was apparently slipping.

“What makes you believe I’m not?” she asked him instead. Her voice was neither cold nor harsh, but strangely soft as if her body refused to listen to her anymore.

Lycan looked at her when he heard her question. He noticed the softer tone in her voice and looked at her. Staring into her violet eyes he took one moment as if studying her and he finally said. “You know, I’ve been watching you all day and…you can’t fool me anymore…” he paused making sure she heard him right.

“Really?” she asked with a frown. “Well then enlighten me, what am I fooling you with?”

Lycan sighed at her continued attempt to keep the cold front. "All of it!" he raised his voice a bit. "The way you're treating the Duke, the cold way you talk to me, appearing all focused and impassive, while all along something inside is screaming out! I don't know yet what happened to you that made this "person" come out but I doubt you're loving it as much as you're trying to make others believe it." he finally spoke his mind.

Lycan had seen nothing of the way she treated Mathias, only what he could have seen at dinner and even then it was nothing to gawk at. “How would you know how I’m treating the Duke?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.  “I give him what he wants and he loves me for it,” she said softly looking down, hearing the words come out of her mouth only they didn’t reach her, make her feel as they should have. “And he will do anything for me,” she told Lycan and smirked. “Which is more than some would do… and this person,” she turned on him and this time her eyes were cold again.

“I like this person,” she said and narrowed her eyes. “You better get used to it, because your friend doesn’t live here anymore.”

Sorsha’s voice grew cold again and he hated that she would keep treating him that way. Still facing her he sighed and said. “Do you really love him or is this a I’ll scratch your back and you’ll scratch mine” kind of thing?! What happens when you get tired of giving him what he wants or he keeps asking for more than you can give?” he asked in a softer tone. Before she could answer him he put his right hand on her shoulder and tried to reach her “Sorsha, you shouldn’t settle for less than you deserve.”

Then something she had mentioned caught his attention. Which is more than some would do.... So this was about somebody else. Thoughts ran through his mind and suddenly it all became clearer. Of course! How stupid of me! How could I have been so blind?! he thought. Still facing her he asked. “This is about Conrac isn’t it?”

She grinned maliciously at his question of tiring what she was giving Mathias. “No, I don’t think so,” she actually smiled. Then his hand reached out to touch her shoulder, but her reflexes had slowed and she didn’t have the chance to move. Instead she looked at his hand and back to him. “Who said anything about settling?”

He ignored her comment and continued on with a question that made her see red. She refused to say his name, it cut like a knife to hear it. “What do you want from me?” she pushed his hand away. “So desperately you want that sweet, giving, kind Sorsha back but for what? All so you could be happy to have your friend again but what about her, to live the rest of her life in misery and heartache?  Did you ever stop to think about what she wants?”

She kept pushing him away and he felt like giving up. Sure he wanted the old Sorsha back but if this was the path to her happiness he would accept it. He just wanted to understand why she treated him this way. Him, of all people. He never stopped thinking about what she wanted…

"Sorsha all I ever wanted was for you to be happy." he said simply. "I never turned my back on you. Why can’t you trust in me like you did before? What did I ever do to deserve this?” Because some fool crushed your heart means I will to? Life is made of heartbreaks and pain and misery but when we want to overcome it we rely on friends. We don’t push them away.”

"But if this is what you want...then so be it." He lowered his gaze and turned away to leave. “I would always do anything for you.” He admitted even if it made him look like a fool.

Sorsha didn’t say anything as she watched Lycan speak. Rely on friends… no… she was done being the weepy woman who cried so easily.  “I cannot do both,” she finally admitted. “It’s one or the other…”

“I’d rather be in control of the pain and the misery than to be subject of it,” she whispered as he left.

“Another who would do anything for me…” she said dully. She didn’t care, she couldn’t open herself up to emotions like she used to, or she’d never crawl back out.

Mathias awoke his head next to his plate looking around he remembered little of the meal or the company. Seeing few people still in the hall he assumed the others had forgotten him there and so he lay his head back down and returned to his quiet slumber.

After Lycan left, Sorsha returned to the dining room and noticed Mathias, quietly sleeping. She actually smiled at the image, and approached him. Sitting beside him, she nudged his shoulder, “Mathias,” she whispered. “I think it’s time you returned to your room.”

Mathias groaned and slowly opened his eyes to look at her, and his eyelids began to droop again. “What am I going to do with you?” she whispered with a sigh.

Looking around the dining area she made sure no one was around to see them, her in particular. The place was empty.

Leaning in, she took his arm and draped it over one shoulder and wrapped one of her arms around his waist.

He mumbled something that made her smile. At least he vaguely realized they were moving. He was heavy, but she grit her teeth and carried him as much as she could. She as well was feeling the effects of the wine but had not given it a chance to lull her. It was with wobbly legs that she half walked, half carried Mathias back to his room.

Opening the door, they stumbled in and she walked him to the bed. He had enough sense to crawl into it and almost instantly he was asleep again. She sat on the side of his bed for a moment, watching him sleep. Reaching up she ran a finger through his hair, and lightly touched his cheek. She’d put him through a rough couple of days, yet here he was… still trying. Would he prove to her this time she wasn’t making a mistake?

Leaving him in his room, she left and returned to hers. She undressed out of her leathers, undid her braid and slipped beneath the covers. She found sleep immediately, this time the nightmare was not waiting for her and she was able to get a good night’s rest.

When she woke the next morning, it was before anyone else did. She gathered her belongings, made sure her men were ready to leave immediately and apologized to Dame Jordan for her delay. She had given thought to leaving Mathias a letter before leaving, but she simply couldn’t find the words. Instead she left him a note, “I don’t know when I’ll return…try not to forget me.”

Then she left to meet Dame Jordan at the port, so they could leave for Paisle
