“Thank the Gods,” Kaylan breathed as she finally walked Kennocha through the gates of Oligarch. It seemed to have taken her days to get there. All she wanted was to find her bed and sleep. So far today, she seemed somewhat better but her health wasn’t exactly what it would normally be.  Therefore she was taking it slow.

The streets were extremely crowded, and this made her nervous. She reached back to pull her hood up and examined the area. When she did her eyes fell on a familiar head of red hair and she smiled. Clicking her tongue she urged her horse forward and when she was near enough, she slipped off.

“Lady KatalynFae,” she smiled and the other woman turned around a bit surprised.  “It has been so long since I saw you last,” she breathed softly and without waiting for the other woman’s answer, she gave her a friendly hug. “I’ve missed you,” she admitted quite shamelessly and blushed at her own reaction.

It was good to be back in Fontan. The offensive into Westmoor had been good. The armies had done damage to all three of the enemies there and that might make Fontan’s position in the negotiations a bit stronger. KatalynFae hoped so anyway. For right now, she was tired and sore. Her side hurt where the Perdan dogs had wounded her, and she was trying to get to apartments in the city. The streets were incredibly packed. TL’s from all over Fontan were trying to get more recruits and get the damage their units had taken repaired.

She heard a familiar voice and turned around. Seeing Dame Kaylan she smiled.

“Lady KatalynFae, it has been so long since I saw you last. I’ve missed you,” And with that KatalynFae found herself the recipient of a hug.

“Dame Kaylan, it has been a while indeed since last we met. How are things with you? Have the predictions of the runes started coming true?” she asked Kaylan as they stepped back from the hug, KatalynFae wincing slightly from the pain in her side.

As she looked at Kaylan she could tell she had not been well. The signs of having been sick were written plainly on Kaylan’s beautiful face. She looked tired, as if she hadn’t been sleeping well.

Noticing her wince, Kaylan bit her lip with regret and made note to be careful. She tried to give a dazzling smile, but her usual energy was waning. KatalynFae’s question brought a shiver and this time she was able to smile despite how she was feeling. The other woman truly had no idea of course it wasn’t like she advertised it to every person she met. Although a part of her wanted to.

“It truly has been too long, and so much has happened. I have so much to tell, yet I don’t believe this is the proper place, too many eyes and ears, and besides… I doubt you were able to find a place so quickly, before you do,” she held her hand up with a stopping motion. “Let me return the warm friendship and courtesy you once extended me, and accept the offer of my estate as your own for the duration of your stay in Oligarch.”

“Before you say anything though, I would first like to congratulate you on becoming Chancellor.” She paused and actually exhaled with relief at her own words. “My heart smiles with pride to know one such as you represents us, I know you will do everything in your power to make sure we have a wonderful future and that we continue to thrive.”

KatalynFae smiled at Kaylan’s offer, and started to refuse thinking it would be a terrible imposition on her friend. Something in Kaylan’s eyes made her stop; “I think that would be lovely dear, but are you sure? I have an entourage of healers, my unit, and I believe Jon Paul is here as well. My brother Zadek has also just arrived, although I think he will probably find more suitable lodgings than with his sister,” she smiled.

Kaylan smiled in return, “there is more than enough room for your men to camp with mine, and I can send a runner to find Sir Jon Paul and let him know where you are. So yes please come to my estates with me.”

KatalynFae spoke to her captain and told him to find Dame Kaylan’s unit and go to her estate with them to set up camp. She looked at her healers and scribes and motioned for them to follow along. “Well then, shall we?” she asked Kaylan, and they headed out of the busy throng of people to Kaylan’s home outside Oligarch.

The path leading to Kaylan’s estate was lined with large trees. In the summer it created a perfect amount of shade, allowing a soft musical sound as the breeze carried the leaves, but now that winter had arrived the branches were all but bare. This created the illusion of desperate fingers reaching towards the grey sky, as if seeking warmth.

They arrived and let the stable boy take their horses away. Upon entering they were greeted by her ever present servant. “Welcome home my Lady,” he bowed deeply.

Kaylan sighed at finally arriving but tried not to let her relief show too much, for fear that her healer would rush up and stalk her for the rest of the evening. “It’s good to be back Oscarius,” she smiled and presented her companion. “Chancellor KatalynFae and her husband Sir Jon Paul, will be guests for their duration in Oligarch, see that they are provided with everything they need. Please show her to the guest rooms so that she may freshen up and prepare my private study,” she paused as if hesitant then continued making her decision. “I would like some food brought up, cheese, bread, stuffed pastries and,” again she stopped, “something sour. It doesn’t matter what, just sour. And make sure there is tea,” she made a funny face at the reminder of tea and sighed with relief, “please ensure that it’s sweet flavored tea.”

She turned to KatalynFae and smiled, “I will wash this dirt and change into something more comfortable and I will meet you there shortly.”

Kaylan walked away and headed directly to her room. Upon getting there she gave a yearning glance at her bed but instead walked by. She removed her travel stained breeches, washed and dressed into a light green satin dress. She unbraided her hair and brushed it out to smooth the soft curls, her long thick hair sprang with volume and her bangs framed her face once more. She then clasped a chain with a green pendant around her neck.

Satisfied she left and waited for KatalynFae in her study.

The room was nicely done and KatalynFae could see Kaylan’s grace in the furnishings. On one side of the room stood a four poster bed, how KatalynFae wished she could just lie in it and rest. It had been a tiring trip back to Oligarch. She knew though that Kaylan was waiting for her, and had a feeling that she had a lot on her mind, so she would forego the rest just now. Plenty of time later when Jon Paul arrived to rest in the safety of his arms.

KatalynFae thankfully took off her dirty travel clothes and washed off what seemed like a ton of Westmoor dirt. She slipped into a green velvet dress and brushed her hair until it shone. She dabbed a bit of perfume behind her ears and at her wrists and checked her reflection in the mirror. Content that she looked her best under the circumstances, she went to meet Kaylan.

Kaylan rose to greet her as she walked into the study. On a small table in one corner were assorted food stuffs and a large pot of tea. The aroma told KatalynFae it was a spiced tea of some kind, she could smell cinnamon in the air. Kaylan poured them both a cup and took a seat close to where KatalynFae had sat down.

As they sipped the tea and nibbled on the delicious food, they began to talk of Zadek and his infatuation with Fiona. Kaylan recounted the story that Alec had finally told her of his first meeting with Fiona and they both had a good laugh over the misunderstanding there.

Then KatalynFae turned to Kaylan and said "So tell me, what has been happening with you, I noticed that you were with Sir Malcolm at Lady Aewyn's masquerade party. Is he the one that the runes foretold?”

When Kaylan first met KatalynFae she had tried to tell her as little as possible, but she had really changed since then. So much had happened and now she wanted to share the happy news with her friend. “I never thought the day would come for me, but I believe yes… he is the one.” She could still remember the night they had shared their first kiss, and his plea to let him help her, and she should have known at that moment, he was the protector the runes had foretold and had become so much more.

“I met him before your wedding,” she admitted, “but it wasn’t until that night that I allowed myself to get close to him,” she whispered the last words, as the memory of that night replayed in her mind.

Kaylan then finally told KatalynFae of her childhood, and what had brought her to Fontan. She then recounted the way she had met Malcolm. KatalynFae was in a fit of laughter when Kaylan admitted to hitting him with a furious blush. She then continued to explain how events had unfolded from that day.

“I tried to resist, but alas I can not refuse my heart. He has such a stronghold over me, it’s a miracle I can even function some days… let alone think” she laughed lightly and the other woman grinned. Kaylan felt a small bit of nausea and lowered her cup to the table. “Although, he has proven he will protect me, I worry of the danger. Everyday that goes by, I seem to be lulled into forgetting to look over my shoulder…I have to remain cautious if not for me, then for him. I love him…and… he has breathed in my ears words I never thought I would hear,” she said softly.

KatalynFae smiled, “Dear Kaylan, I am so happy for you. I know that Jon Paul is the best thing that ever happened in my life, and it appears that Malcolm is in yours as well. He is a good man, I trust him with my life…. are you allright dear?” KatalynFae noticed that Kaylan looked strangely pale suddenly.

“Yes, I have had a cold or some such ailment,” said Kaylan quietly.

Suddenly Kaylan let out a small moan and slumped in her chair. KatalynFae caught her just before she would have hit the floor.

“Healers!” KatalynFae yelled, and hers and Kaylan’s both came running. Two of Kaylan’s servants appeared in the doorway as well. “Take your mistress to her chambers, and see to anything the healers need. Hurry now!”

They took Kaylan to her room and got her situated while KatalynFae waited just outside the door. She could hear the healers talking in low tones but couldn’t make out the words.

She stepped in the room and motioned for the healers to come to her. “What is wrong with Dame Kaylan?” she asked them directly. Her face took on an astonished look for a moment as they told her of their beliefs as to the cause of Kaylan’s ailments. Then a wide smile touched her face. “Well my friend, perhaps you truly will have your happily ever after it seems.”

A short while later, Kaylan stirred and saw that Katalynfae was in a chair close to her bed. “What happened?” Kaylan asked quietly.

“You fainted my dear,” said KatalynFae softly. “Your healer and mine agree on what is wrong, but I am afraid it is no mere cold.”

Malcolm had gotten word that Kaylan had taken ill again, although the healers seemed to think it was of little concern, for some reason. Nevertheless, he was heading to her estates...And at some speed, despite the full armload of flowers, and the full supply of extra comfort foods and the like a few servants were carrying. And not just any flowers, but roses...Which turned out to be a very poor choice when he overheard Chancellor Katalynfae discussing Kaylan's "health issue".

Roses, as many poets have noted, have thorns. Thorns, surprisingly enough, do bad things to hands when said hands squeeze hard in shock. And, once said initial shock is over, the pain from said thorns in said hands can be quite intense.

Thus it was that as a direct result of learning that he would be a parent in less than a year, Malcolm screamed.

“Kaylan my dear, you’re with child,” KatalynFae said happily and the words seemed to echo in the room as Kaylan gave one long slow blink. Then a scream took her out of her shock and she turned to the doorway where stood Malcolm, his entire demeanor was stiff, the roses clutched in his fist as he trembled with pain unable to let them go. His face had gone several shades of pale and now looked grey.

Kaylan’s mouth completely dried up and she gave a squeak of fright.  She didn’t know what to say, her mind raced with every possible excuse and she pulled the blanket off the bed. “That’s…. that’s…. that’s… Malcolm?” She asked timidly and his eyes only grew bigger. She turned back to KatalynFae, “NO!” she exclaimed. “That’s impossible, I refuse to believe it, no,” she said vehemently and stormed out of the room, practically pushing Malcolm out of the way and ran down the hallway.

Jon Paul left the academy and hurried to Kaylan’s estate after getting word that his wife had finally returned from Bruck safely.

he arrived just in time to hear Malcolm scream. Jon Paul dropped the flowers he had picked up for his wife and drew his sword and rushed in to see Malcolm standing wide eyed and it seemed a bit stunned.

"Sir Malcolm! What seems to be the problem?"

Realizing that what ever the problem his sword would not be needed, he replaced it in its scabbard.

And since Sir Malcolm was not offering an immediate reply, Jon Paul went to retrieve the roses he had dropped outside and then returned to Sir Malcolm’s side.

He had not moved an inch.

Malcolm was in an interesting place. Various whorls of color swam before his eyes. One of them looked surprisingly red, and appeared to bowl him over. Intriguing that. Now the dominant color seemed to be, in fact, quite dull. There appeared to be a variety of loud noises as well. One of them seemed to be particularly familiar. His name, maybe? Yes...That made sense. His name.

Interesting how one of the reds was getting larger. Seemed to be flowing out of a place where the green and pale bits mixed. Strange, red wasn't close to either of those colors...

Then his head hit the floor, and his eyes snapped back into focus.

"Oh, gods damn it all!"

He tossed the remnants of the roses away and stumbled past Jon Paul, nearly hitting the Chancellor, and half-fell half-ran out of the hall after Kaylan. His blood-slicked hands did not make it particularly easy to steady himself on the walls, so he just kept running.

"KAYLAN! Gods, come back! Please!"

KatalynFae and Jon Paul watched the two go in a state of shock. Jon Paul moved to where his wife sat still in the chair her mouth dropped open in surprise. "Hello my Beloved," he said and handed her the somewhat crumpled roses with a smile. "I am so happy to have you back again, safe. Zadek assured me that you were allright, but I am more than pleased to see that for myself," with that he kissed he tenderly.

"I am pleased to see you as well," KatalyFae replied. "This has been some day, and all I truly want is to be able to rest." She smiled up at her husband invitingly.

"Well, in that case, we need to leave at once'" said Jon Paul. "I have recently given my oath to Duke Sulliven, and I have an estate here in Oligarch; just up the road in fact. We have dinner waiting for us, and I have a nice relaxing evening planned for you." His grin said volumes.

KatalynFae smiled. She turned to Kaylan's healer, "when your lady slows down, please inform her of my change of plans, I think she and Sir Malcolm will need some time alone to decide what is to happen from here."

With that KatalyFae and Jon Paul headed out to his estate to enjoy their evening together.

Kaylen heard Malcolm call after her, but her legs wouldn’t stop. The fear had rooted so deep she didn’t know what to do, or think, she was just so shocked. She made it down the hallway and turned the corner heading straight out of the estate and ran for the fields. She didn’t recall ever starting to cry but her tears clouded her vision and she slipped on the ground barely managing to stop her fall. She tried to get up again but she was too weak from her sobs. Her world had suddenly crashed around her.

Malcolm tried to keep running, but he quickly lost sight of Kaylan, and the world kept swimming. The thorns had ripped through his hands badly, and he was bleeding heavily...And the knock to his head had upset his balance in a terrible way. He made it out onto the street, but as he turned after her, the building ended...And without a wall to guide him, he quickly fell face-first, hitting the ground hard. His wet hands slipped on the ground, and he couldn't make his way back to his feet.

<i>Gods...father...No, can't think...not that...have to get to Kaylan...think later...mother won't be happy...Wonder if Alec killmenothinkwycan'tImove...</i>

His eyes closed as one of his servants came running out, calling for a Healer.

She cried for a while and shivered as the coldness seeped through the satin of her dress. Letting out a small whimper she looked back over her shoulder. The thought of returning occurred to her but she was too afraid to face them now. What would she say? It wasn’t true. Looking ahead, she got back up to her feet and simply continued to run. After his reaction and hers… she didn’t know what to think…  He wouldn’t want her now… would he? His child….their child…and it was something neither of them had ever planned.
