'''Roleplay from Alec McDowell'''

Alec read Kaylan’s letter for the fourth time and lowered it to the table. He brushed his hand through his blond hair and pushed his chair back so it sat on the back two legs, swinging between the cot and his table. It groaned with protest at the abuse but he ignored it, he couldn’t stop thinking of the perfectly set out words on the paper before him.

He picked it up again and read it aloud, using what he thought was a perfect rendering of Kaylan’s voice and tone but with a deeper hue.

“Cousin,

I hope you are doing well. I have to admit, ever since my return I find I am happier, and I have such freedom. I’ve never tasted this before and I am having some difficulty containing the lightness of my heart. I am currently on way with my men and as soon as I come across the FSR, I will make sure to visit you. It’s probably no use seeking me out at the moment I don’t stop much but to bed down at night. But I will let you know when the time is right.

Take care of yourself, until I see you.

Kaylan

He lowered the letter again and frowned. He looked to the other letters scattered on the table and was still confused. Ever since she had left that night after her odd reaction to Malcolm’s absence she had begun to write him daily.

In any other circumstance he would have been happy to have so much communication with her but it was just the tone of the letters that had him worried. She was… different. Too happy and forthcoming, it wasn’t like her at all and it drove him mad that he couldn’t really see her. At least he would be able to read her eyes, that’s where the secret lay with Kaylan, even if outwardly she appeared statuesque, her eyes revealed everything.

He knew how heartbroken she was the other night, but she had needed the time to be alone which he had graciously given her. When he had decided enough time had passed and he got the nerve to seek her out, she had already left. Then suddenly he received a letter from her, stating she was a Lion now and weirdly… the happy just kept on coming. It all seemed so quick, he felt he was communicating with a stranger… he hardly knew this person that wrote him daily.

He needed a woman’s take on this, someone to help him understand what was happening. He picked up a fresh page and dipped his quill to begin a letter of his own.

“Dearest Sister…”

'''Roleplay from Sorsha McDowell'''

Sorsha walked through her new estate with a smile. She had recently begun to survey changes and they were going according to plan. She only wanted to add a personal touch. She walked through the main hallway noticing several paintings adorning the walls. They depicted war scenes and people who had come before her. She would add her own touch there as well.

Continuing down the long hallway, she came to her favorite area so far. Large white sheer material hung loosely around the back entrance, to reveal beyond it a large balcony. In several places were chairs and tables for guests, and surrounding the area were several flower arrangements, and plants. Small birds flew and sat near bird baths and other small animals who sniffed curiously at her appearance then decided to dash off looking for cover.

Beyond that, steps led down to a large green lush area as far as she could see. Walking down, she looked up to the sun shining down on her and her smile grew bigger. It was a warm day today, and the rays touching her gave her a sense of relaxed freedom. Large trees were seen in sporadic places, offering shade if someone decided to spend the day there. Which at that moment she decided to do. She would get a blanket find a small area in the verdant grass and watch the sun set.

A while later, after telling her servants her wishes, she was found lounging, on a cushion they insisted upon and savored the taste of the fruits they had brought. Since it was so warm, the light flowing blue dress she had chosen was perfect for enjoying the whispering touch of the light breeze and the sun kissing her skin. Eventually her thoughts turned to recent events and what she would do now.

“Lady Sorsha?” someone asked expectantly and her attention was taking from the setting of the sun and her reverie. “yes?” She looked up at the scribe as he handed her a letter. She sat up and thanked him. “Seek Lorlan,” she told him, “he will take care of you.” He bowed and returned inside.

Smiling, she noticed her brother’s seal and broke it. As she read, her smile slowly began to slip.

Dearest Sister,

I hope you’re doing well. I’m good but I won’t waste time and get straight to the point. Ever since Kaylan’s return, she’s been different. I feel like someone else has replaced her. I don’t know how else to explain it but that there is no fire where there used to be one.” Sorsha picked up a blackberry and chewed it slowly.

I know she went through something horrible, she obviously won’t speak of it in her letters and she conveniently ignores all the important questions in mine. She just continues to prattle on about how happy she is and for the life of me I can’t see what makes her so happy… I honestly can’t put my finger on it but I feel like an errand boy being sent off on a goose chase following a trail of false pretenses. I don’t know if you’ve been in contact with her but I was hoping you would be able to get her to at least tell you something… anything.

I keep replaying events in my mind, trying to figure out the problem but I have nothing. I don’t mean to be a spoil all but what on earth could make her so happy? She was taken and obviously mistreated. She has these horrible scars she tries to hide from me…Before her abduction, she was with child… and I can assure you… she no longer is. On top of that the man she loves, the would be father of that child, Sir Malcolm Bedwyr, has all but disappeared to another continent without a word. I remember the look in her eyes when I told her, you can’t fake that kind of pain and heartache. It broke my heart to do it, but I couldn’t lie to her.

Sorsha looked past the letter and frowned at the name. Kaylan had in the past informed her she had met someone fantastic and that she was passionately and irrevocably in love with the man but she had never given his full name, Sorsha just knew him as Malcolm.

“Bedwyr,” she whispered the name out loud and slid a finger between her teeth, biting in thought. “Bedwyr…” she repeated. It was a moment and she suddenly realized where she had seen the name before. “Duke Colin Bedwyr,” she said as the name came to her. She wondered at the relation between the two, she couldn’t recall any conversation with the other man having only had the opportunity to exchange military information. Ignoring that for the moment she hastily returned to the letter.

I have given the thought to contacting Malcolm but to tell the truth, I’m not entirely sure he would be happy to hear from me. He left without a word and no one really knows of his exact whereabouts and why. Which means he doesn’t even know she’s alive and that she’s returned to us but how on earth do I relay that kind of news? The question is, would he believe me or think it an awful joke. I’m trying so hard not to interfere in her life but I don’t know what else to do. Please, I need your advice on this. I’m awaiting your response. Oh and hi. I miss you big sister, I can’t wait to see you again beautiful one.

Lowering the letter she looked back to the setting sun, wishing she could see beyond the horizon to her brother, imagining his concerned face as he wrote this letter. This really was not like him, and she was worried now.

Now concerned over the recent letter, Sorsha left the blanket behind and walked back to her estate. She gave each of Alec’s written words careful consideration but occasionally returned to it refreshing her memory, hoping she would be able to give him some sound advice.

After everyone thinking Kaylan was dead, she had returned alive and well. Well not so well according to Alec. She had scars and had been with child. This made Sorsha stop in her tracks.

“What on earth happened?” she whispered. She had only found out in that letter her cousin had even been pregnant at all.

“How terrible,” she murmured and her hand reached up to touch her abdomen. She could only imagine how she would be if the same thing had occurred to her. Without being in the same position she knew Kaylan was devastated. That type of ordeal was not forgotten easily no matter what anyone may think. Then as if that wasn’t bad enough, she was now separated from the man she loved.

Would this Bedwyr leave because he needed to move on from Kaylan’s supposed death or had something else called to him? What would she have done if she had been in love with someone and was forced to carry on with her life without them in it? Would it be that easy to start over and so soon? She knew every time she looked around, something or someone would remind her of them. Would she be strong enough to take in that type of heartache and agony day in and day out?

No. She would leave, to start fresh to pray that time would heal the pain and sorrow. She would look for a chance to fill the emptiness with mundane things, not replace the one she loved.

Then there was the question of how she would react if someone were to tell her after accepting their death, “sorry it wasn’t true, the person you thought was dead is alive after all.” Would she believe? More importantly, would she want to? She really didn’t know.

Was it up to her and Alec to decide Kaylan’s fate in this matter? Who were they to interfere with her life? Sorsha had received one letter from her cousin and Alec was right, she had sounded eerily too happy. But if Kaylan knew Malcolm was gone, why would she not seek him out herself to prove to him she was still alive, in person, he deserved to know.

Was it because after all she didn’t want to go after him? Had she truly closed that chapter of her life because in reality it was too painful to look into her unborn child’s father’s eyes and know she could never get that back.

Sorsha was so lost in thought she walked into something and stumbled back. She shook the thoughts from her mind and looked down. “Oh I’m sorry,” she mumbled an apology at the young man she bumped into. “I’m afraid I wasn’t looking where I was going,” she explained shyly.
