The creation of Kalmar Islands The actually islands that make up Kalmar islands came into being after the great cataclysm on the east island. This is discussed in detail here: Bad Tidings The cataclysm involved various cults, prophets, destruction, civil wars, ill omens, etc. all most mysterious. After such instances, the great mountain on Chaos Island burst forth spewing ash which for days darkened the skies over the whole continent. When thge sun's light began to pierce through and the ash subsided three islands were formed west of the east continent. Soon brave, and adventurous young settlers began homesteads and businesses in their new city Kalmar. Monks from the mainland came to see the enigmatic new temple "Chaos Temple" that appeared on one of the islands. The regions were settled into, and the new land was ripe for conquest. But it was not foreign powers that fought to take the islands. Instead a new realm forged from the peace of long enemies, Old Rancagua and Perdan. Ten nobles from each realm formed a colony in Kalmar city and began to invade the surrounding regions. At this time two events occured. The colony was granted independancy and considered a realm in it's own right and a large amount of nobles flocked to the area. These nobles began a swift conquest of all three volcanic islands. In this they suceeded, but at a cost. Many a man lost his wealth and soldiers. Scarcity of goods for repairs plagued the realm for a short time. But regardless, Kalmar Islands first priority, the unity of the three islands under one banner was complete.The reformation of Kalmar Islands Until recently, Kalmar Islands was a monarchy realm. Led by King Prometheus, it was a peaceful, but poor and embarassingly weak(militarily) nation. While the meager army was fighting monsters on the northern island. El Cid initiated a rebellion to the dismay of the Kalmarians. He and numerous others had rebelled against the peaceful kingdom. The military was far too weak and it takes a long time aboard a ship to reach the capital in Chaos Temple. The rebellion was successful and the counter-rebellion, began far too early and unorganized was easily destroyed. About half of the 40 Kalmarians were banned from their realm. It became a tyranny under El Cid. He proclaimed it a new Avamar. Those that remained neutral were forced to pay a fine to remain in the nation. The few Kalmarian people were now lead by foreigners, and not by Kalmarians. This government was unsupported by Avamar and the rest of the continent. Eventually though the Avamarians reconsidered, and realizing their home-city Avamar would not be easily regained, Avamar took up residence in Kalmar Islands, with the reconquest of Avamar a very long-term goal. Even more recently, a planned rebellion reformed the government into a democracy almost exactly as old Avamar had. Under the new democracy free speech among nobles flourishes, as does nobles control of the politcial matters of the nation. Freedom in all aspects of society now exists. The Government of Kalmar Islands
The Kalmar Islands is a democratic realm that places a very high value on freedom and the individual's voice in government. Under the monarchy, there was discussion but ultimate power rested with the king. The King was elected only when the previous King was unable to rule. Hereditary rule was not in place.
The new system is far more complex. It is continually being refined and added to. Progress is being made to turn the government from a somewhat anarchic realm just freed of autocratic rule to an organized and effective democracy. Many ideas are being proposed and weekly assemblies are held. These assemblies are the realm's most talkative and productive times.
Major Concepts of the Kalmarian government are:
Rulers of Kalmar Islands
1. King Ebion II Junior Zeppos - Ruled over the Perdan Colony and set up the realm. This period was marked by the foundation of core Kalmarian values as well as the rapid conquest of all island regions. Under King Ebion, the islands were united.
2. King Prometheus Titans - Ruled over a period of peace with other realms and slow economic growth. During this time, a great festival of sport was held in Temple City(area around Chaos Temple). Events included swimming, dueling, archery, and numerous other events.((OOC: not really sure, this could've been during the second period of Prometheus' reign)) Also durng this time, Arch Priest "The New Paradigm" was stripped of his post himself after much protest from nobles, and refusing to resign as the King ordered.
3. King Boom2 ... - Ruled temporarily while Prometheus was wounded. This was a very short peroid and was rather uneventful.
4. King Prometheus Titans - Continued rule as before, though the Kalmarian army was very weak. Drafting was greatly reduced so the population could grow. Nobles were expected to accept not having a military unit to command. With a small army and numerous monsters growth was slow. toward the end of his reign, the Kalmar Islands acquired Kazan for a short time. He was eventually usurped by newer nobles with a stronger military.
5. Tyrant El Cid Rogala - Sucessfully rebelled agaisnt the monarchy. All loyalists were banned as a result and all neutral nobles were fined. This period was marked by a complete turnaround. Many old allies like Old Rancagua no longer supported the realm. New nobles took over and much of what was the old Kalmar was reformed. Many nobles from the dead realm Avamar who were then refugees in Oligarch left that nation to reform their old country in KI. Kazan was lost. The whole Kalmar Islands nation was changed forver.
6. Chancellor Gnaeus Unti - The first democratic leader. While the Kings were elected, Gnaeus was eleted by the new set of nobles who took over the realm, and in the democracy elections were monthly. This period was marked by the formation of demcoratic priciples as well as many popular votes. In this time, permanent region lords were elected as all former lords were temporary replacements for those deposed of during the rebellion. Also, a doubling in militay power and an increase in population brought further growth to the islands. The original plan to form "New Avamar" in KI was rejected. The Great Dragon sent down a message that the name of the realm was not to be altered. Kalmar Islands it would remain.
7. Chancellor Lalakis Abadonas - Upon Gnaeus' resignation a new Chancellor was elected. Lalakis was the former Avamarian ruler and was quite experienced. This period was marked by debate within the realm and negotiations with deposed ruler Prometheus. Ultimately, after a popular vote by the nobles, Prometheus' plan of "3 months monarchy then vote on democracy" was rejected. Many of the nobles by this time were not around during the monarchy and had grown attached to democratic values. In this timerelations with foreign realms improved, except for Old Rancagua. There was a state of war with Old Rancagua, and though both the Kalmarians and some Old rancaguans including King Dekion favored peace, an invasion came by Old Rancaguan warmongers who wish to return the kingdom to the two-three nobles from pre-rebellion KI adn place King Prometheus has stated he doesn't support war and has actually joined KI again to fight agaisnt Old Rancaguan invaders. Chencellor Lalakis was captured in a battle in Stora.
8. Chancellor One Rogala. - Not nearly as radical as his relative El Cid, One is temporarily leading the country while Chancellor Lalakis is imprisoned. One is the current ruler of Kalmar Islands.
