The sunken nature of the land surrounding the city of Freke has lead to the townsland being called "Freke's Deep", or simply "The Deep" by the dour locals. The town is surrounded by rings of ever-expanding walls and palisades, erected further and further away from the city as the town grows. Within the first ring of fortifications stands a castle with a tower of stone and steel on either side, the residence of the town's lord.

There is a local story about the origins of these towers. The story goes that the town was first founded by two wealthy families from Freke, who each built themselves a tower of stone and steel as a place of refuge from the monsters. The families soon fell into bickering and developed a bitter feud; to put an end to it, the first lord of the town built his castle between the two. The feud has long since ended, but the castle remains and now incorporates those early fortifications.
