Background

Janna Da Hadez is the eldest daughter of a small branch of the Da Hadez family based in Azzal in Darka. She had a troubled childhood as her fiery temper and lack of respect for tradition led to constant conflict with her family and the minor nobles and wealthy merchants that comprised their social circle.

As she matured Janna ignored the entreaties of her father, Haron Da Hadez, who wished her to concentrate on developing the skills and manners that would ensure a good marriage and instead she sought out those willing to teach her the skills of a soldier. As her family had some influence with the local academy and militia Janna's training in the arts of combat were obtained surreptitiously and often from less than conventional sources and were the cause of many quickly hushed-up scandals.

Finally came a scandal that could not be ignored. During her reluctant attendance at a ducal ball the Duke's son attempted to forcefully impose his intimate presence on Janna. The lecherous young man survived her spirited refusal but the damage done to his family's honor (not to mention the damage done to his ability to contribute to his family's linage) was too great and Janna was forced to flee their retribution.

Janna had long admired the exploits of her cousin Balian Da Hadez, another Da Hadez exiled from Darka, who eventually led Norland's armies and became a legendary hero. She decided to follow in his footsteps and join that viking realm as a soldier.

Pledging her allegiance as a knight of Brackhead she was assigned to The Army of Odin's Spear, Norland's largest army, and was plunged immediately into the long-running war between The Northern Federation and Minas Ithil. Having proved herself on the field of battle as a commander of men in a handful of brutal battles she elected to fight alongside her men and took on the mantle of a Hero of Norland and swore fealty as a knight of Hernepoole.

Following the war she rose to the rank of Marshal of The Army of Odin's Spear and was appointed Baroness of Shiverwood..

Following Norland's defeat in the Minas Ithil war Janna swore she would not rest until the now broken and vulnerable Norland was capable of defending itself fully and she dedicated all her energy to that task. She was proposed for the role of General of Norland's armies but although this was approved by Norland's ruling council rumours of Janna's reliance on gold from her family (who were still based in Darka, the co-architects of Norland's betrayal and defeat in the war) hurt her reputation with the middle ranks of the military hierarchy who's resistance made her appointment to the role unworkable.

Following the capture of Norland's ruler, Xaphan, in a despicable sneak attack by Darka and the elevation of the Thane Jarl, Valak, from General to the position of ruler Janna was finally promoted to Grand Shield Maiden, General of Norland's armies and faced the impossible challenge of defending Norland from the oncoming attack by the combined armies of Darka, Eston and Barony of Makar with a handful of soldiers. Despite being wounded twice in as many days during Eston's brutal attempt to take Brackhead she refused to yield and continued to rally the remnants of Norlands armies and those peasants who refused to submit to the invader's brutality in defence of their homeland. The takeover attempt failed and a long, bloody siege ensued, it's outcome inevitable.

For weeks Janna fought with a mere handful of soldiers and eventually with only her loyal captain by her side. She was wounded many times but through sheer force of will she survived countless battles, skirmishes and assassination attempts. When no more soldiers remained she rallied groups of peasants to defend their families and homes from the unstoppable slaughter and destruction. She was not disappointed in their fury and courage. Norland almost literally fought to the last man and Janna was among the score or so of souls left alive when the city of Brackhead finally fell to The Barony.

Disgusted by what she had seen in the actions of men and realms who called themselves noble Janna turned her back on civilisation and undertook a solitary life in the rural regions of Carelia where she concentrated her considerable fury and skills in combat towards the eradication of undead abominations.

After a few months, for reasons that are not known, she travelled north to her homeland of Darka. There she continued her lone vendetta against the undead and, it is rumoured, worked in secret as a scout for her cousin Severn, the protector of Northern Darka and Count of Eurotan.
