The sailors, fishermen and smugglers of Narville were always more talkative the finer the brandy they were offered.

In the normal course of events assumptions would he made about a woman in the seedier dockland taverns plying weather-beaten captains with such liquor but something about this woman's demeanor made it plain that such assumptions would be dangerous.

Perhaps it was the cultured, if husky and cracked, voice. A voice hinting of lands far to the north and a breeding not often seen in such low places.

Perhaps it was her poise. Even after matching glasses with the hardiest of inebriates it could be described as feline. Though that is a less appealing attribute than it sounds to the more observant and self-aware of dock-rats who watched her.

Perhaps it was the scars, or the fine but terribly battered leather armor.

Perhaps it was the axes; plain and functional and not quite well enough concealed to hide the chopped but recently honed cutting edges or the patina of rust coloured stains.

Most likely it was the disarming smile. A smile who's charm evaporated when the recipient realised that he was now defenseless in front of a pair of eyes that had all the warmth and pity of things that scull over shallow reefs and bring peace to drowning men.

Nevertheless the woman found the stories she sought. Tales of the doomed ship who's black wood could be seen at low tide like a corpse's ribs in a washed-out grave. Warnings about the light that shone like a becon there when the moon is but a sliver in the sky and lured many an unwary seaman to his doom. Whispered suppositions about what became of them.

She found a captain, too drunk or too fearful to refuse her challenge and a boat to take her to the reef that moonless night.

She was never seen again in the docklands of Narville after that night and the captain would never speak of what he saw, but from the following dawn the warnings of sailors being lured to their end by the star-bright light that shone from the once cursed reef would soon become mere memories and, in time, legend.
