In my effort to bring the various BattleMaster sites closer together, I've updated the skin of the Wiki a little bit. The background image, even though you see almost nothing of it, is the really beautiful Aurora-x2 by freelancah.

Social Features on the Wiki
I've added a major extension tonight (it was 5 am when I started, I couldn't sleep) - Social Profiles. Check out your userpage. You will notice new and exciting features that make the Wiki more into a community. We will be adding more like these, as we are planning to merge the Community Site and the Wiki, in order to bring down the exploding number of BM-related sites you have to check.

Sponsorship
Some of you may notice that we have added a small notice to the "Game Basics" page on the main site. Pokerlisting is an online gambling site whose content team supports small games and gaming-related sites with some cash, and BattleMaster is among those selected recently. With this donation, the hosting fees can be paid for more than a year, ensuring BattleMaster's future. Though, of course, it should be said that ever since I started them, donations have also been more than sufficient to cover my costs.

Unused accounts have been deleted from the database. This are mostly spam-bot accounts, and any accounts that had no edits or other activity ever. Regular user accounts should not be affected. --Tom 10:09, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Server Crash
We've just had one of the worst crashes in BattleMaster history. I don't yet know the reason, I'm investigating it. Shortly after the turn yesterday evening, the server went into overload, then started thrashing, then went down completely at about 19:47. I've got it back up now, and as soon as a few things are repaired it'll go online again.

The Status of Tom
I've been very, very busy with a number of things non-BM and also a number of things related to BM more or less directly. That has put many things on the back-burner. Right now, I'm not very happy with the state of the game (number of bugs, etc.) but I lack the time to go about fixing them.

Server Update
During some maintainance work I decided to simply update the server to the latest version of all software involved. This resulted in a bit of downtime while database, apache, etc. were updated. Everything should be back to normal now. --Tom 16:51, 27 July 2007 (CEST)

Adventurer Unleashed
I made a horrible mistake and opened up the new adventurer class yesterday. Within the past 18 hours, about 600 adventurer characters were created. Oh dear... :-) - seriously, there is a lot of excitement, and people seem to like it very much so far. --Tom 12:47, 16 December 2006 (CET)

Database Tuning
I've installed monitoring software and done some tuning on the database, with more to follow. We've been having some slowdowns and related problems lately, and I'm finally closing in on the issue and on ways to counter the load without adding more hardware.

I've updated the wiki software to MediaWiki 1.6.5, the latest stable release. Everything looks to be fine, and it was a fairly smooth upgrade. Kudos to the MediaWiki developers.
5 Year Anniversary
On 01/01/2006 at 01:01 am, BattleMaster has been running for 5 years. It's been quite a journey, starting at barely enough players to fill one island (we launched with 20 or so players from the alpha phase) to well over 1000 and seven islands.
Thank you all for being here.
Power Failure
There was a power failure at the hosting sit of the BattleMaster server on Wednesday, August 31 at around 16:30 local time. A firewall did not reboot properly and cut the server off when power was restored at about 18:00 - so BM was unreachable for over 12 hours.
I am currently checking what happened to the turns and whether or not to rewind to yesterday.
Tom's Holidays
I'm leaving for holidays on Saturday, so we will go live on September 1st or so, when I'm back. Until then there should be enough people here - Editors, newspaper writers and the Titans (invited today) to make sure some progress happens and we actually can go live. :-)
Making Good Progress
After about three weeks, we have made a lot of progress and things are starting to fall in place. The first non-editors, namely the writers of newspapers, have been invited in, and we will probably open up the Wiki when I return from my holiday.
Big Game Updates

A lot of big game updates are happening right now, with new invasion system, new tax system, and more new systems. It is a very exciting time to be playing BattleMaster. --Tom (talk) 14:24, 30 July 2012 (CEST)

Major Update

MediaWiki and all extensions have been updated to the latest versions. That made it necessary to disable a few extensions for the moment, as they are not (yet) compatible. --Tom 16:22, 6 March 2012 (CET)

Skin Update

In my effort to bring the various BattleMaster sites closer together, I've updated the skin of the Wiki a little bit. The background image, even though you see almost nothing of it, is the really beautiful Aurora-x2 by freelancah. --Tom 07:52, 2 February 2011 (CET)

A minor addition is that pages now list the contributors at the bottom. Credit where credit is due. --Tom 07:03, 26 January 2011 (CET)

Server Move Completed

Since yesterday, the main game is now also running on the new server. DNS updates should propagate quickly as I already reduced the TTL (time-to-live) a week before the move. --Tom 07:04, 7 October 2010 (CEST)

Server Move and Wiki Update

I've moved the Wiki (and the Bugtracker) to a new server, the main game will follow shortly. This should take care of the performance issues we've been having. While doing that, I also upgraded a few things. For the wiki, MediaWiki has been updated to 1.16 and Semantic MediaWiki to 1.5.2 --Tom 08:42, 19 September 2010 (CEST)

Wiki Update

Semantic MediaWiki has been updated to 1.15.3, Semantic MediaWiki to 1.5.0 and all other extensions to their current version. --Tom 15:47, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

Server Hardware Failure

On the 4th of May, the raid setup (mirrored harddrives) in the BattleMaster server failed, and the machine died. This happened shortly after the turn, but before the backup data had been automatically copied to a secondary server (which happens a few hours after the turn, due to the high traffic that is common right after the turn). This led to the worst case scenario of an entire day of playing being lost.

The game data was restored from backup on the secondary server (usually used for testing by the development team). Wiki, bugtracker and mailing list need additional data, though, that was not immediately available. As Murphy's Law has it, Tom had to go on a business trip the same day of the server failure, while the recovery required physical access to the machine.

On the 11th of May, the wiki could finally be restored to operation, and most other data recovered from the crashed server.

The post-mortem of this operation led to some important insights, especially regarding the recovery of the wiki, bugtracker and mailing list data, where a database dump is insufficient to restore the service. --Tom 06:06, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
