The game data was restored from backup on the secondary server (usually used for testing by the development team). Wiki, bugtracker and mailing list need additional data, though, that was not immediately available. As Murphy's Law has it, Tom had to go on a business trip the same day of the server failure, while the recovery required physical access to the machine.

In my effort to bring the various BattleMaster sites closer together, I've updated the skin of the Wiki a little bit. The background image, even though you see almost nothing of it, is the really beautiful [http://freelancah.deviantart.com/art/Aurora-x2-64819986 Aurora-x2 by freelancah].

The post-mortem of this operation led to some important insights, especially regarding the recovery of the wiki, bugtracker and mailing list data, where a database dump is insufficient to restore the service.

I've added a major extension tonight (it was 5 am when I started, I couldn't sleep) - Social Profiles. Check out your userpage. You will notice new and exciting features that make the Wiki more into a community. We will be adding more like these, as we are planning to merge the [http://community.battlemaster.org Community Site] and the Wiki, in order to bring down the exploding number of BM-related sites you have to check.

A minor addition is that pages now list the contributors at the bottom. Credit where credit is due.

Unused accounts have been deleted from the database. This are mostly spam-bot accounts, and any accounts that had no edits or other activity ever. Regular user accounts should not be affected. --[[User:Tom|Tom]] 10:09, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Big Game Updates

A lot of big game updates are happening right now, with new invasion system, new tax system, and more new systems. It is a very exciting time to be playing BattleMaster. --Tom (talk) 14:24, 30 July 2012 (CEST)

Major Update

MediaWiki and all extensions have been updated to the latest versions. That made it necessary to disable a few extensions for the moment, as they are not (yet) compatible. --Tom 16:22, 6 March 2012 (CET)

Skin Update

In my effort to bring the various BattleMaster sites closer together, I've updated the skin of the Wiki a little bit. The background image, even though you see almost nothing of it, is the really beautiful Aurora-x2 by freelancah. --Tom 07:52, 2 February 2011 (CET)

Social Features on the Wiki

I've added a major extension tonight (it was 5 am when I started, I couldn't sleep) - Social Profiles. Check out your userpage. You will notice new and exciting features that make the Wiki more into a community. We will be adding more like these, as we are planning to merge the Community Site and the Wiki, in order to bring down the exploding number of BM-related sites you have to check.

A minor addition is that pages now list the contributors at the bottom. Credit where credit is due. --Tom 07:03, 26 January 2011 (CET)

Server Move Completed

Since yesterday, the main game is now also running on the new server. DNS updates should propagate quickly as I already reduced the TTL (time-to-live) a week before the move. --Tom 07:04, 7 October 2010 (CEST)

Server Move and Wiki Update

I've moved the Wiki (and the Bugtracker) to a new server, the main game will follow shortly. This should take care of the performance issues we've been having. While doing that, I also upgraded a few things. For the wiki, MediaWiki has been updated to 1.16 and Semantic MediaWiki to 1.5.2 --Tom 08:42, 19 September 2010 (CEST)

Wiki Update

Semantic MediaWiki has been updated to 1.15.3, Semantic MediaWiki to 1.5.0 and all other extensions to their current version. --Tom 15:47, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

Server Hardware Failure

On the 4th of May, the raid setup (mirrored harddrives) in the BattleMaster server failed, and the machine died. This happened shortly after the turn, but before the backup data had been automatically copied to a secondary server (which happens a few hours after the turn, due to the high traffic that is common right after the turn). This led to the worst case scenario of an entire day of playing being lost.

On the 11th of May, the wiki could finally be restored to operation, and most other data recovered from the crashed server.

The post-mortem of this operation led to some important insights, especially regarding the recovery of the wiki, bugtracker and mailing list data, where a database dump is insufficient to restore the service. --Tom 06:06, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
