History

Little is remembered of the history of Alaise before it became part of Drachenwald. Here the region prospered as part of that realm until the Civil War which ravaged Drachenwald, eventually leading the formation of the Dictatorship in that land. In fact, in the waxing days of Drachenwald, the Dictator Skanders was also the Lord of this region, giving it a great significance beyond its rural nature.

Unfortunately for Drachenwald, that realm eventually earned the ire of the Cagilan Empire, and was inevitably crushed under its weight. On November the 3rd, Cagil took the region, though it was later reclaimed only two weeks later. However, when Drachewald dissolved, the Empire annexed it once again. Since that time, the people of Alaise have been rather fractious, but have remained loyal to the Empire, and have become a member of the Empire’s Duchy of Eaglin.

Culture

Because of the rather harsh landscape of the Drachenwald Mountains, Alaisian culture tends to be far less sophisticated than that of the more temperate and yielding regions of the Cagilan Empire. Its people are known for their rabid independence, less from the Empire in general, but more from the social norms outsiders wish to impose on them. This has lead to a general distrust of outsiders and an almost rabid desire to protect their own from attacks.

Religion is also very important to the Alaisians, with The Order being the foremost religion of the region. Some of the religions most devout followers can be found here, and as a consiquence they are not particularly welcoming to those from other religions. As has been seen in several past nobles of Alaise, in order to be accepted as Lord of Alaise, you must also be an adherent of The Order.

Agriculture and Diet

As Alaise is a mountainous region, and as such their soil does not lend itself well to agriculture. A few grains, particularly wheat and barely are grown, as are some vegetables, though some such as onions, turnips and beats are also grown though not really in sufficient quantities to trade. Because of the colder climate of the mountains, fruits aside from wild berries are almost unheard of except in the lower reaches of the mountains were apples and even grapes can be found.

Because of the poor soil, Alaise’s main food staples come from livestock such as sheep, pigs, and chickens. As such, there is a heavy emphasis on mutton, eggs, and cheese in the region, with dishes such as quiche being particularly popular. The most well known delicacy, known around Atamara as the “Alaisian Tart” is a meat pie consisting of cooked mutton, apples, and currents.

Economy

Because of the mountainous nature of the region, Alaise is rich in mineral wealth, including gold, stone, and timber. In fact, Alaise is the prime exporter of raw wood to much of the Duchy of Eaglin and one of the biggest in the entire Cagilan Empire.

Politics

Alaise has provided a great deal of important officials in relation to its small population. Former Lords of the region include the former Dictator of Drachenwald, Skanders and Prime Minister Sir Samuel of the Cagilan Empire. The current Lord of Alaise is Viscoutess Desiree of the House of Luthor.
